Talent returns Abramoff contributions

SAM HANANEL
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Sen. Jim Talent has returned a $2,000 contribution made to his 2002 Senate campaign by indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

The Missouri Republican also returned a $1,000 contribution that Abramoff's former law firm made to his re-election campaign earlier this year. The disclosure was made in Talent's most recent campaign finance report filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Abramoff, a high-powered Republican lobbyist and fund-raiser, has pleaded innocent to a six-count federal fraud and conspiracy indictment stemming from his role in the 2000 purchase of a fleet of gambling boats in Florida.

Talent spokesman Rich Chrismer said the evidence against Abramoff was enough for the senator to return the money.

"He believes the evidence on its face strongly suggests that Abramoff was guilty of something," Chrismer said.

16. can someone explain why/how its legal for Cheney to do this?
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 02:27 PM by OKthatsIT
He's contributed millions to GOP candidates all over the country.

First...Cheney tricks US into an Iraq invasion.

Second...no-bid contracts kick in for Halliburton.

Third...Cheney makes killing in Halliburton profits.

Fourth..Cheney hands out MILLIONS to GOP Reps.

Fifth...US Rep votes continue to support Cheney/Halliburton profits.

8. I did the audio at an event attended by both Jim Talent and Lacy Clay...
and went backstage to say hello to Clay, who I went to grade school with. Talent was conversing with Clay and I interrupted them to introduce myself and thank Lacey for his work as congressman. Talent stood there as we quickly conversed, Clay motioned to Talent and started to introduce us and I glanced at Jimmy and back at Clay and said "oh it's okay- I know who he is... anyways, it's great to see you again, sir and keep up the good works!" As I turned the corner to go down the hall I hesitated and looked straight at Talent who was on the other side of Clay, and he was watching me...

The look on Talents face was PRICELESS!

10. Good one! Thanks for your quick thinking. Snubbing Jim Talent
was the way to go! Some people would have caved in, and ended up having to shake his grubby Republican hand, and you really don't know where that hand's been! (Don't want to know, either!)

It would be heaven to see her pitch him after chasing him around for awhile.

She's already getting to work on Talent at her website:

17. Any idea who's going up against Papa and Baby Blunt?
We need to get someone who won't be afraid to point out the Blunt's ties to Abramhoff and Delay...

From what I understand Pop N Babe are both implicated in the "laundry" business...

anyone?

9. I think these people are returning money to Abramoff
so he'll have enough money to pay for his attorneys and so he won't squeal about all the people he's given money to under the table.

15. Not only that, but if Abramoff goes to the slammer, it'll be interesting
to see if talent and others who are suddenly so eager to return his dirty money will come around and start huffing and puffing about how them damned libruls are trying to criminalize conservative politics. Whine, whine, whine.

Like the snubbing story, too, BTW. A little mortification is good for the soul, jimmy. Assuming you even have one, that is...

12. There ya have it, everything will be OK now as soon
As the Texas redistricting is set aside. It was this illegal money that made that Texas Republican gerrymandering happen.

Yes, just forfeit the money, and put the Dem's back in the drivers seat and all will be well in Texas.

Setting back the redistricting and re-elections? Well, maybe. Who knows what a judge could order. You know those activist judges, and what they can do.

19. Senator Kit Bond from Missouri staggers into the mix:
Abramoff Scandal Engulfs Bond-Talent
view trackbacks
Submitted by Roy Temple on Wed, 10/19/2005 - 10:09am. Jim Talent
In 2001 and 2002, Senator Kit Bond’s top legislative priority was the passage of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), and his top political priority was trying to get Jim Talent elected to the United States Senate.

In the spring of 2002, Kit Bond used a shadowy fundraising committee, called the Missouri Millennium Fund, to pursue both goals simultaneously.
(snip)

The MMF was described in the Columbia Daily Tribune by one board member as “a political action committee created by Bond to raise money for GOP candidates in Missouri.” In 2002, the Missouri Republican Party was spending its time and money trying to get Jim Talent elected to the United States Senate.

In the spring and summer of 2002, Bond, via MMF, raised $30,000 from Indian gaming clients of Jack Abramoff, just as Abramoff was lobbying to get provisions benefiting his client in the legislation that Bond has stated repeatedly was his single biggest priority.

Governor before becoming a Missouri Senator.
