Sen. Voinovich: conservatives didn't give court nominee fair shake

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Sen. George Voinovich accused conservative groups from his party of forcing Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers to withdraw with mean-spirited and prematurely judgmental treatment.

"She probably experienced the worst welcome of any nominee, especially from folks who should be supportive of the president," the senator from Ohio said Thursday. "She didn't get the kind of reception you would ordinarily get if the president of the United States nominated you for the Supreme Court. Various groups, particularly on the Republican side, didn't give her the opportunity to share why she's qualified."...

Ohio's other senator, Republican Mike DeWine, sits on the Judiciary Committee. DeWine spokesman Jeff Sadosky said Thursday that the senator was disappointed that the committee never got to discuss her qualifications.

DeWine has expressed strong support for Miers and said earlier this week that he was "tired of these conservative groups I've never heard of" trying to discredit her.

1. I agree.
She should have had her day in the hearings, a chance to demonstrate her knowledge and make her case. I saw a strong streak of sexism throughout this entire fiasco.

6. This is great to see. Republicans attacking Republicans.
This is surprising that Voinivich is this out-spoken against the Religious Wing of his party. He took a huge hit with Republicans over the Bolton Nomination; it'll be interesting to see how Republicans treat this.

I predicted this the day Bush won the election. The Religious Conservative/Moderate Conservative coalition will finally split. I hope Democratic strategists are taking note. Lot of ways to exploit this in 06/08.

7. Gee, are the moderates just now realizing the Rapturist Right takeover
The extremists are in total control of the Republican Party and have been for at least 10 years (just look at the new crop of Repubs in the Senate/House and Exec. branch...theocratic neocons)

10. They are eating their own
Miers would have voted to overturn Roe but apparently she wasn't pure enough for the Taliban. Make one wonder about what Nazi is Bush going to nominate next.
