Church plans Bedford protest

By MIKE LEWIS, mikel@tmnews.com
Wednesday, October 26, 2005 1:14 PM CDT

BEDFORD - A controversial Kansas church plans to bring its protests to Bedford.

The Westboro Baptist Church announced Tuesday it will picket the Dive Christian Church at 10 a.m. Nov. 6.

The protest is against Sen. Brent Steele, whom the Kansas church has labeled a “lawless, God-hating demagogue.” Steele, meanwhile, is asking residents to “turn their backs” on the protesters should they come to Bedford.

The church is reacting to Steele's plans for new legislation. He wants to make it a felony to commit disorderly conduct at military funerals.

His action is in response to a protest the Westboro church staged in Martinsville Aug. 27 during funeral services for Army Staff Sgt. Jermey Doyle.

Church members held up signs reading “USA=Fag Nation” and “God blew up the troops” outside Doyle's funeral. Westboro church members argue the war in Iraq and the deaths of American troops are God's punishment for a nation that is too accepting of gays.

4. What protest plans are way for when Phelps finally dies? He and

his family of ass-wipes have been asking for it. All of the people who have been hurt by hate-mongering from this "church" (military families, families and friends of AIDS victims, and many others) should show up at Phelps' own funeral when it finally -and mercifully- happens.. and give him the proper send-off he deserves. The Westboro congregation would be vastly outnumbered...

5. Ick Ick Ick
Probably the first time in my life I've come anywhere near to agreeing with Fred Phelps.

NOT his utterly slimy, despicable practice of funeral protests.

But to make "disorderly conduct" at a military funeral a felony? That, to my mind, is extremist.

10. What if every presidential speech or pro-troop rally is a "funeral"
or a "memorial service?"

That would stifle dissent pretty damn quick.

Yeah, for once I hope Fred kicks some ass.

But I still hope he gets his ass in a sling on the way.

6. I just want to say this about the "Good Reverend"
I do not wish death upon him, or any physical violence for that matter. But if he were to die I would shed no tears, and in fact, I might buy a ticket on the next flight to Topeka so that I could dance on his freshly laid grave.

9. I'm calling Steele's office right now. JUST military funerals?
Edited on Fri Oct-28-05 12:42 PM by IanDB1
Why wasn't Steel raising a stink when Phelps protested at gay funerals?

Or when he protested at the funeral of Mister Rogers (who wasn't even gay?)

And when they came for the military funerals, Mr. Steele finally decided to speak-out.

I'm going to look into Steele's record, and then call him respectfully.

11. I see your point...
Fred Phelps and his family are the most hateful, vile, venom spewing people I've ever seen. I'm surprised he hasn't choked on his own poison. Too much hatred is already excused when directed toward gays and lesbians. They are as deserving of love and respect as any other human beings.

Any faults they have, they would have whether gay or straight. Just the same as anybody else. We have to stop looking the other way when hate is directed toward a group of people just for being who they are. Phelps and his followers can control their own behavior. Sexual orientation is, at least in my opinion, something people are born with, like brown eyes, or red hair.

12. He reminds me of an unfinished true crime story
There is too much insanity without me suspecting him acting out either on his followers or their children in a abusive, most likely sexually abusive manner. It's almost textbook--The focus on sexuality, the willingness and apparent NEED to cause deep pain. The control and manipulation of hatred. The grandstanding. My guess is a especially perverted psycopathic pedophile. I hope I'm wrong.

Sick bastard. I'm afraid he won't be stopped without him hurting many more people first. May he recieve everything he deserves.
