Rosa Parks to lie in honor in Capitol Rotunda
Edited on Fri Oct-28-05 01:13 PM by ih8thegop
From Yahoo:

WASHINGTON - Rosa Parks, the seamstress whose act of defiance on a public bus a half-century ago helped spark the civil rights movement, will join presidents and war heroes who have been honored in death with a public viewing in the Capitol Rotunda.

Parks, who died Monday in Detroit at age 92, also will be the first woman to lie in honor in the Rotunda, the vast circular room under the Capitol dome.

The House on Friday passed by voice vote a resolution allowing Parks to be honored in the Capitol on Sunday and Monday "so that the citizens of the United States may pay their last respects to this great American." The Senate approved the resolution Thursday night.

It will be only the fifth time in the past two decades that a person has either lain in honor or in state in the Rotunda. The last to lie in state was President Reagan after his death in June last year.

Rosa Parks to Lie In Honor at Capitol
http://news.yahoo.com/fc/us/rosa_parks

WASHINGTON - In death, Rosa Parks is joining a select few, including presidents and war heroes, accorded a public viewing in the Capitol Rotunda. It's the place where, six years ago, President Clinton and congressional leaders lauded the former seamstress for a simple act of defiance that changed the course of race relations. On Sunday, Parks becomes the first woman to lie in honor in the vast circular room under the Capitol dome.

If anyone deserves the honor, it's her.

I wonder if anyone, who voted against the proposal?

I must say after the events of today I am concerned about some sort of terror threat taking place with the huge crowds that will be there. Am I nuts?

23. It's patronizing. * cabal is using her death to repair their image.
Edited on Sat Oct-29-05 12:32 PM by Mugsy
It's *not* an honor. It's patronizing. The Bush cabal is using her death to repair the damage the Katrina response did to their image.

Parks deserves the honor, but it is doubtful she would be so honored with "Laying in State" had this Administration had a higher approval rating among African-Americans.

It's a shame that she's going out being used that way.

24. For whatever reason ,she deserves it. Will it be on TV?

They had a memorial to this great lady in Los Angeles. It was televised and I missed it.

Does anyone know if her funereal will be televised?

although it'll be on the news, I'm sure, it's a coffin lying in repose in the rotunda, the exact same place that Reagan's body was. I'm going tommorow evening, I'll report back.

27. I guess I could point this out again
this is the House and Senate, not the White House. The President cannot order someone to lie in State in the Capitol, the President can't even enter the Capitol without an invitation from a member. This came out of the Senate (hardly the place friendliest to Bush these days) not the House or the White House. Or is the Bush Cabal all of a sudden in charge of the Senate, despite the humiliation of having two nominations and a wage bill, all with great fanfare thrown back into their faces this week? please read your Constitution.

And yes, she would be given this honor without the mess of Katrina, who's gonna vote against it?

29. I recall, in the Black Community

everyone was very proud that Rosa Parks could be so brave!

There were a few that were worried that she should have gotten hit or hurt.

I recall some thinking that a man should have taken the seat instead of a woman.

Now I feel she was exactly the right person for the moment.

Congressman Lewis said," Rosa Parks sat down so WE could stand up!"

...where she's going :-)

And Muggsy, you're right. They are using her to repair their image. But just because they're doing it for the wrong reason doesn't mean it's the wrong thing to do.

30. ***I strongly recommend this AUDIO TREASURY of Rosa Parks inc. CONYERS***
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2194590
thread title: AUDIO TREASURY of Rosa Parks history & interviews, incl JOHN CONYERS

I posted this as something to lift our spirits, calm us, and remind us of the important things. Listening to Rep. Conyers reminiscing about his decades of having Mrs. Parks in his office, I realized again how much impact a person of strength and grace can have on the people around her and even the whole world. It's a source of hope to hold tight to.

33. That's awesome! Last year when my son was in 2nd grade...
he did a presentation on "Miss Rosa," as he called her. I have the written part of the presentation in a box in the top of my closet. I was unable to get off work to see the oral part, but his teacher said it brought tears to her eyes to see a white kid give such a heartfelt presentation about Miss Rosa.

I thought to myself "Yep, that's my boy!"

38. The GOP desperately trying to get that 2% up!
Nothing against Rosa Parks, but there are many other women who deserved this honor as well. Plus, it is highly out of character for Republicans to honor a 'rebel'
