NYT: At Milestone in Inquiry, Rove, and the G.O.P., Breathe a Bit Easier
At Milestone in Inquiry, Rove, and the G.O.P., Breathe a Bit Easier
By ANNE E. KORNBLUT
Published: October 29, 2005

WASHINGTON, Oct. 28 - After months of uncertainty and four grand jury appearances, Karl Rove escaped the worst possible outcome on Friday, and a collective sigh of relief swept the Bush administration and the Republican Party.

Mr. Rove remained under a legal cloud: not indicted, but still at the center of the unfinished business in the C.I.A. leak case. He was absent from public view for most of the day, and conspicuously avoided giving any appearance that he had begun to celebrate.

But several friends and colleagues said he had resumed his role as the ubiquitous adviser who has guided George W. Bush's political career since before Mr. Bush's days as Texas governor. Even as the administration somberly accepted the resignation of I. Lewis Libby Jr., Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, a pall that had fallen over Mr. Rove's section of the West Wing seemed to lift. And Mr. Rove, who just two weeks earlier had seemed in grave danger of being charged with a crime, took comfort in having survived this important point in the case....A Republican official who had heard from Mr. Rove's friends said he seemed "relieved" though chastened by the five counts brought against Mr. Libby. The official said Mr. Rove and White House colleagues did not want to make any statements that would provoke Mr. Fitzgerald....

***

Although Mr. Rove had reportedly been distracted by the investigation, several of his colleagues said Friday that in fact he had been engaged in his work all along. They denied that the case had caused any preoccupation contributing to the two central political disasters of recent weeks: the federal response to Hurricane Katrina and the crash-and-burn of Harriet E. Miers's nomination to the Supreme Court.

Still, they acknowledged that if Mr. Rove's legal troubles were indeed starting to fade, his prospects for helping the administration regain its footing were greater....

8. Awww...ain't that sweet?
Doesn't it make you want to just take ol' cuddly Karl in your arms and comfort him? How kind and thoughtful of the New York Times to publish such a loving tribute to this great human being on his having escaped, however temporarily, the just rewards of his past efforts! I must remember to SUBSCRIBE to this most excellent newspaper. Right after I take the rest of my money and burn it in a celebratory bonfire. We must all PRAY for Mr. Rove as he continues his noble efforts to help the administration regain its footing. Oh, yes, and nominate this KORNBLUT creature for the Pulitzer Prize.

 :puke: :argh: :grr:

10. Did the NY Times see and read what I did?

Fitz has Rove square in his sights and if Mr. Rove's legal troubles
are starting to "fade" then watch me play a little linebacker for
Ohio State today.

I wonder how many others in the media and @ the times are on
the "payroll?"

The old grey lady ain't what she used to be.

BTW as per post #8 .... I like Krugman, Dowd, and some others but
I will take my $50.00 and pay for another year of the Washington
Post National Weekly.

11. Rove is probably celebrating this weekend.
Last night, he had a fabulous dinner of lobster thermidor, and the finest french champagne. He had tears in his eyes as they clinked their glasses together. He sent grateful thoughts to God himself, as he realized he had been spared.

Exonerated. Freed from public implication of guilt.

OH MY GOD that felt good, as he swallowed the last drops of his Mumm champagne.

Free to continue character assassination. To relentlessly attack anyone who dares speak up against the Bush cabal.

Now the truth is, the unwashed masses are getting restless. And they're getting pissed about how the government is being run. Rove sees huge storm clouds on the horizon. They're as black as can be.

But for now - he's savoring the moment.

17. I Don't Think So
KKKarl isn't out of the woods yet--none of them are. Even if they could quash things from the past, the present will keep them in jeopardy. This team is going down, one painful indictment at a time.

Think of it as a nine course meal, not fast food from a greasy franchise. Savor the whine, cleanse the palate with a little sarcasm, and enjoy each perfect bite.

18. Every news broadcast I saw and heard yesterday. . .
described Rove as "ruthless," and "unscrupulous," and a "take no prisoners" sort of guy. Made me smile to realize that, for many Americans, this was there first good look at the "Boy Blunder's" right-hand man. I wonder how many had a change of opinion about Bush given what they've now learned about those who are closest to him.
