DELL INC: Hundreds of workers laid off
Dell Inc. laid off hundreds of employees Thursday and Friday, the company's largest cuts in Austin since it downsized after the tech bust in 2001.

Dell spokesman Jess Blackburn declined to say how many jobs the company eliminated but said it's "probably a fair characterization that it's the most significant" since Dell laid off 5,700 workers in 2001.

Several laid-off employees, who declined to be named, said they heard from colleagues that the company had cut at least 300 jobs. Dell occasionally has laid off workers in the area but typically in smaller numbers than this week's cuts.

2. Did they also announce how many they hired in India?
I was going to buy a Dell computer last fall when my old one croaked. I didn't even bother to check after all the complaints about their customer service. Customers just couldn't understand what their support people were saying! BIG language barrier!!!!

3. I have to say it is terribly difficult
I can't imagine what people with large difficulty hearing do. My hearing isn't perfect but it is decent and I had a devil of a time understanding them.

4. I ended up buying an HP. I've been pretty hpaay with their support.
I always use what they call live chat, so I don't have the problem of not understanding an accent. I can tell the people aren't from the US because of the way some of their sentences are formed, but they've all been very patient and did a good job for me.

6. I wonder if my cousin lost his job at Dell.

It'd be horribly ironic if he got outsourced since he actually is from India.

18. It'd be funny to see Bush re-enact some of Alex's lines.
"Come and get one in the yarbles, if you have any yarbles! Wait a minute... 'yarbles.' Man, that's a funny word. He he he he... 'yarbles.' Hey, Uncle Dick, is that like 'gonads?' Like when that fella said I killed that hooker, didn't I kick him in the 'yarbles?' He he he he... man, what the hell is in this milk?"

7. my boss's friend had to call tech support in India
" Patrick " answered and told her the procedure she needed would take 20 minutes, so she put her phone on speaker and continued her work.

Then she started hearing heavy breathing! Realized that " Patrick" must have been working from home and was taking the 20 minutes to have sex !!!

5. 1. Their service is excruciatingly bad. 2. Dell is big Repub supporter.
I'm looking for a laptop. Dell will not be a consideration for the two reasons listed above.

8. Part of the reason I just bought a Gateway notebook
I have two Gateway desktops at home and neither has ever had a problem.

My new Compaq at work had to be replaced (fried motherboard) this past thursday.

The Dell's in our offices have had disk problems, and my sister-in-law's Dell notebook recently had a keyboard failure.

Dell's customer service used to be the best - not any more!

21. The ads have sucked since they got rid of the Dell Guy
I know that's not THE reason for sales being down, but I find there presence in the mainstream market is down because of the ad change.

22. I'm confused
They have hired hundreds in OKC and are building a huge building in downtown okc. Most expensive part of town for a business right now since its near bricktown and the riverwalk. They are opening a customer service center here.

25. the Oklahoma office of Dell is to deal primarily with Business Contracts
because they don't want the big buck spenders to talk to people in Bangalore...

However, Dell is also advocating and assisting with the outsourcing of other IT positions to overseas sites.

The OKC office will only have about 1000 employees...versus the thousands of jobs they have outsourced to India..

24. We need a new word
Edited on Sun Oct-30-05 09:53 AM by michaelwb
I propose a new word:

"Delled"

Meaning: To be fired so your company can hire cheaper unregulated labor abroad.

Usage: "Dude, you've been Delled!"

The state and county offered up everything but the kitchen sink to get them here. I'll bet they won't stay 5 years.
