Schwarzenegger may be hurting his own cause -- poll
Schwarzenegger may be hurting his own cause -- poll
Tue Nov 1, 2005 6:33 AM ET

By Adam Tanner
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaigning ahead of election day next week has hurt rather than helped efforts to win support for his four favored ballot initiatives, a poll released on Tuesday found.

Since starting his political career a little more than two years ago, the former Hollywood star has fueled several come- from-behind victories though charismatic appearances in the closing days of the campaign.

This year, as voters consider reforms on teacher tenure, union political contributions, the state budget and redistricting, the charm may however be wearing thin, according to pollster Mark DiCamillo of the Field Poll.

"What we are seeing this year is that he's pretty much worn out his welcome, especially with Democrats and with nonpartisans," he said in an interview. "It almost has a counter productive impact in this year's campaign."

CAMPAIGN 2005
Governor raises the specter of taxation
He counters lack of support for his ballot measures

Herr Gropenator , with a new Field Poll showing all of his ballot measures trailing, spent Halloween using a potential tax increase as the bogeyman waiting for Californians if his special election agenda fails at the polls next week.
----cntd...

Pathetic loser. I hope he gets chased out of California after his miserable, short political career is over.

7. Years ago I watched him do a TV interview to promote Kindergarten Cop and
it was chilling and I have hated the man ever since. The reporter asked a valid question about the movie being promoted as a family movie despite its violence and adult theme. Arnold pasted on a nasty fake smile and talked right over the guy in such a sick way -- saying all sorts of non-sequitar stuff, reccomdending the movie for the whole family.

13. He turned on me once, too, during an interview.
I was with a group of other reporters in a press junket for one of his movies. I asked him about something controversial (I forget exactly what it was now - it was quite awhile ago), and here's how he answered: "a reporter from a first-class news operation shouldn't be asking third-class questions." And then he breezed straight on to the next question. I never got a suitable answer for mine. Back then, there wasn't any whispering about a future in politics for him, either, and he was approaching his highest heights as a big-ass 15-million-dollar (or Gulfstream jet) salary per movie.

Next he'll threaten to terminate voters if they shoot down the proposals.

12. Absolutely, he didn't debate

the Democrats were solidly against him.

They tried to say the Hispanics voted for him because he was the Terminator. I don't think so.

Gov. Diebold in my opinion.

20. Then CA will be screwed once again

"Californians seeking reform know better than to bank on media polls," advisor Rob Stutzman told Reuters. "Private polling shows a surge for reform and an uptick in the governor's popularity."

Statements like this really jump out at me now.

4. i agree, whenever any of his ads come on with him in them
they smack of bullshit and heavy on the insincerity. His speaking manner is a total turnoff and when i hear him i'm convinced he doesn't really know what he's talking about, he's just reading if off a script. He reminds me of Bush only he wears way more makeup.

6. Here's the SacBee's take on it with Field Poll results
Poll: Support for key ballot measures falling
Governor's backing may be hurting their chances on Nov. 8.
By Gary Delsohn -- Bee Capitol Bureau
Published 2:15 am PST Tuesday, November 1, 2005
Story appeared on Page A3 of The Bee
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's special election campaign got more negative news Monday with release of a new statewide Field Poll showing his four initiatives, already in trouble with voters, losing additional ground.
More troubling for the Republican governor is the Field Poll's finding that Schwarzenegger's campaigning for the measures actually seems to be hurting his chances in the Nov. 8 election, now just one week away.

The poll showed that among likely voters, Schwarzenegger's support for a particular initiative makes more voters - by a margin of 43 percent to 24 percent - inclined to vote "no" rather than "yes."

"The chances of the governor's agenda being totally rejected are increasing with the results we're seeing with this poll," Field Poll Director Mark DiCamillo said.

"I wouldn't have bet that two or three weeks ago. I would have said he had a good chance of pulling out one or two measures. But with this poll, the wind seems to be blowing against him on all fronts."

He's really fallen so low, he has to have dead people (Vampires) speak for him. He's still acting that's for sure.

15. Someone explain this to me....
If Davis could me recalled in a popular vote, why don't the Dems get the money together to start a recall drive of Arnold?

Clearly the guy is despised by a majority of Californians, so it wouldn't be hard to do.

17. Because people are sick of special elections
If we had him recalled it wouldn't happen until June and the general election is in November anyway. I'm sick of recalls and special elections and I know for a fact a lot of Californians are too. I'm also not wild about wasting any more money.

19. We are suffering from
voter fatigue here in California - which I believe is part of a larger rethug plan - makes people so sick of voting - they won't!

It seems we have had non-stop elections here since the recall - which itself was less than a year after the general election. After this 'special election', we have a primary in 7 months - voter fatigue, I'm tellin' ya.

18. Don't assume that because his special election initiatives are...
trailing in the polls that the election will be legitimate. This isn't your parents America. Fraudulent elections are becoming commonplace events. He could still easily win everything in the elections.

21. This has been my secret
fear - we don't get voter verified paper ballots until 1/1/06. This is the primary motivation for the 'special election' Last chance 2 screw the vote.
