Bush to Name FDIC Chairman to Gulf (recovery) Post

WASHINGTON -- President Bush will name Donald Powell, chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., to oversee federal disaster recovery efforts in the Gulf Coast, administration officials said Tuesday.

Powell will be in charge of the long-term plans to rebuild the states that were hit by three powerful hurricanes over the last two months. The sluggish federal response to Hurricane Katrina, the first and most damaging of the three, has particularly been widely criticized.

Bush was to announce Powell's role at the White House with Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not yet been made.
