Safe Schools Act helps gangs recruit, NDP says
Safe Schools Act helps gangs recruit, NDP says

(FYI - NDP is Canada's New Democratic Party)

CANADIAN PRESS

"Ontario's "experiment with American-style" zero-tolerance school policies has been a total failure that helps gangs find new members, New Democrat Leader Howard Hampton said today as he urged the province to repeal the Safe Schools Act.
The law, introduced four years ago by the previous Conservative government, imposes automatic suspensions and expulsions for offences such as assault, drug trafficking or selling or carrying weapons or alcohol.

Students can also be immediately suspended for threatening to harm another student, vandalism, swearing and possessing or being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

No, I'm not going to try to explain Canada's inscrutible politics. I've already got a headache. :banghead:

3. Before the imperical evidence disappears, all they need to do
is call in the old teachers who are still alive, and dust off all the old records from back when schools "worked"..

Then...

go back to what worked.:)

5. Times have changed too much-
What did work way back was the small neighborhood school. Now, in an effort to squeeze every dime, communities are opting for the mega-eduplex design. Our local elementary school has an enrollment of 967 students, 40 classroom teachers, 15 aides, 2 gyms and coaches. It is huge.

6. I don't think a big school is so bad as much as a large classroom.
I'd take a school of 1500 students with class sizes of 16 over a school of 500 students with class sizes of 20-25 students.

7. 20-25?
I didn't have a class that small until I went to college.

30-32 was more the norm, particularly until elementary school (started kindergarten in '87).

8. neighborhood schools ARE better
Kids need to KNOW their classmates.. My son;s high school had almost 4K students..He was a BMOC, so everyone knew HIM, but to this day, people come up to me and say.."I went to school with your son"..and he doesn;t even recognize their name..

Kids feel more comfortable when they go to class with their neighbors.. parents might get more involved too when it's a neighborhood school//

This just got way too complicated in the 80's, and it's only getting worse..

I am so glad my kids are grown

4. NOTE TO CANADIANS FROM A NEIGHBOR TO THE SOUTH:
In case it should ever come up again, you should be aware of the fact that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WORKS RIGHT IN THE UNITED STATES ANYMORE!

Do NOT copy our policies, as they will lead to ruin. Not a single part of our government works anymore -- there's nothing worth emulating here.

Carry on, eh.
