White House opposes oil donations to heating fund

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration opposes a Republican proposal that oil companies voluntarily contribute some of their record profits to a federal fund that helps poor Americans pay winter heating bills, Energy Secretary Sam Bodman said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Senate Finance Chairman Charles Grassley sent a letter to U.S. energy companies, urging them to donate 10 percent of their swelling profits to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

Asked by reporters if the administration supported the plan, Bodman responded: "No, sir. I wouldn't support it. It is similar to a tax."

Bodman made his remarks after addressing an energy industry group.

2. The poor are freeloaders on the system.
This voluntary contribution business implies that the oil companies are taking advantage of people and should be taxed in punishment, when all they are doing is working God's will by extracting money from the undeserving poor and redistributing it upward to the wealthy, who are indeed the Chosen of God. Republicans who don't understand this are hardly better than godless Liberals.

4. which is more absurd?
thinking making a voluntary request of a donation is going to result in any donations (and pretending that one has done something policy-wise to help those who are at greatest-risk) from obscene levels of windfall profits...

or

opposing a request for voluntary donations?

Geez.

8. God forbid if large corporations were faced with an extra tax when the
typical large corporation pays an effective tax of about one-half the corporate tax rate. The extra hundreds of dollars many will pay monthly to heat their homes that ends up as profits to energy companies won't feel a bit like it were an extra tax put on them by this Administration. :sarcasm:

9. In that case, people voluntarily paying for that gas
in the first place is similar to a tax, which the administration would oppose us paying.

Oh wait, we are the people, so we don't count.

We pay the taxes. Corporations reap the profits.

10. Sen. Grassley just on CNBC doesn't understand why Bush would oppose
He said he could not understand how a President of the United States could oppose encouraging charitable deductions by the oil companies in light of their record profits from prices that affect consumers since we have a public policy to make sure consumers can afford heating fuel

11. This is unacceptable!
I won't even ask if this administration realizes that this is as much of a threat as any terror attack or national disaster to those on fixed incomes, the disabled, the poor and to children. People will die this winter, if they have no heat and I already know people who have not been able to put oil in their tanks. They are lucky so far that the temperature in the NE has been fairly mild, so far.

And for what, so that the greedy, gluttonous war profiteers don't have to contribute anything to this country?

If this is capitalism, it isn't working for the people ~ and maybe its time to get some legislation that ensures that life-saving commodities, like heating oil, gas, water etc. are not denied to those who are the most vulnerable. That will be the end result of their gross policies.

14. Bodman says this voluntary contribution would be "similar to a tax"
Oh really? But it was ok for Bush to urge us regular joes to give voluntary contributions to the Red Cross and Salvation Army following Katrina. Nobody mentioned anything about those contributions being "similar to a tax".

God forbid the oil companies would have to part with a freaking nickel of their gargantuan profits, especially since they're all set to collect even more tax breaks after the Energy bill passed.

This is an outrage! What an 'up yours' moment: The White House opposes fat-cat oil company cronies voluntarily contributing 10% of windfall record profits to a heating fund for the poor!!

:grr:

16. Maybe Dobson will lead the nation in prayer that only those people
who didn't vote for Bush will die this winter because they can't pay their heating bills. That should solve all the problems.
