CNN's (Aaron) Brown Out
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 03:56 PM by ECH1969
Aaron Brown is out at CNN, and Anderson Cooper will take over Brown’s 10 p.m. time slot, effective Monday.

The shakeup comes as a result of some prime time scheduling moves that CNN made official Wednesday. Cooper will take his 7 p.m. showcase, Anderson Cooper 360°, to the 10-midnight spot, formerly occupied by Brown’s NewsNight. Cooper’s old spot will be filled by an additional hour of The Situation Room, hosted by Wolf Blitzer.

In a memo to staffers, CNN president Jon Klein said the veteran anchor “will be leaving CNN and is very much looking forward to some well-deserved time off with his family.”

Brown joined CNN in 2001 and first came to prominence with his on-air reporting from New York on Sept. 11 of that year. Cooper joined CNN as a weekend anchor in December 2001 and began hosting Anderson Cooper 360° in March 2003.

21. world news now
I used to watch World News Now with him and whatever cohost when I was in college staying up all night studying. No one was watching, they did all sorts of silly stuff. It wasn't quite amateur hour, but I always had the feeling that someone said 'you've got the news department from 2am to 5am, do whatever the hell you want." The closing graphic at the end of the broadcast was the best. A closeup of someone's eyeball with the glow of a TV in it, and the standard ABC announcer of the time:

"ABC News, where more insomniacs get their news than from any other source."

61. Man...when I first moved out on my own, I would watch WNN...
for hours...it seemed like it began at midnight (possibly later) and didn't end until 4 AM...the neverending news program, with a touch of humor; the whole thing seemed a bit off beat.

This was circa 1999-2000, I remember getting the coverage of the "war" against Serbia (re Kosovo) from that source.

Sure as hell beat the coverage of local Gainesville, FL TV news...not to mention that RW shill of a newspaper out of Jacksonville (I remember spending hunting down for newstands that carried the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and shelling out $2+ to help fixate my news tooth).

More entertaining then USA today as well.

10. It will be interesting to see how this develops.
CNN may be reigning in the troops with a high profile dumping. Katrina had people going off-message. On the other hand, they may see the chimp's days as numbered and are bending with the wind.

Elevating Anderson Cooper seems to make the second hypothesis marginally more probable to me.

I guess it could be seen more as elevating Blitzer, since he gets the 7:00 o'clock slot vacated by Cooper. This is all reminiscent of Kremlinology - CNNology, I suppose.

18. I will, too, actually. I liked his on-air demeanor. I suspected something
was up when they moved Anderson Cooper up to equal footing with him and made him share the spotlight. You don't do that with a star anchor whom you think is still holding his own (for whatever reason). Everyman is out at CNN. And DAMN I wish they'd jettison paula zahn. Followed by wolfie. I'm sure they could get very well-paying jobs at some conservative think tank or Pox "news" or even maybe the White House. The White House is on such shaky ground that there might be some openings there, too, anyway, and those two are already well-known water-carrying shills.

37. My nine year old races to turn off tv after Countdown before Cosby can
utter a word. It's gotten to be a family tradition. I can't understand why anyone would hire her. Her voice is extremely annoying, and her intellect is lacking.

Aaron Brown will definitely be missed. I never watched him prior to Katrina, but I have learned to respect his manner. He will not show up on Faux and MSNBC seems doubtful because they don't want to upset Cheney or his staff. I hope this isn't a RW makeover, but if it is their rating will continue to head south.

I am also fearful of our beloved KO. He is often absent and I wonder if his style and reporting will upset the military industrial complex.

Besides he was an ass on the Amy Goodman interview where she was saying that in the war coverage they always had General A v. General B in the debates and no peace/anti-war voices at all. He was saying a peace point of view was irrelevant and all sorts of crap....pissed me off....I hated how he always the Chicago weather joke in the end, BOR---ING....

he was very condescending about why CNN didn't cover the march. It was the same weekend has Hurricane Rita and even though the storm had already passed, according to Aaron, that was the bigger news and tough luck.

have someone worth watching but turned out to be disapointing. CNN cannot seem to find good people anymore. There is sneaky Dobbs, Paula Zahn, sigh, and Wolf Blitzers voice and momotone gets on my nerve--Then over to Rita Cosby ? Lord, but she is awful. There is just no one worth watching except Keith.Cooper probably has another 6 months. But Wolfie will die on his feet in the situation room.

42. It was obvious once he began "sharing" his show with Cooper.
Aaron Brown will forever me remembered as the man who beamed "great fun, great fun" the night the United States began dropping bombs in Iraq. "Great Fun" Brown is no loss to journalism.

Once Anderson Cooper began sharing billing on Brown's own show while Cooper kept his own time slot still to himself, it was obvious that Brown was being pushed out.

And of course, Brown's broadcast put down of Larry King one evening when King was obviously pissed didn't help his situation either.

Good bye and good riddance.

I can now say "Great Fun".

Now it makes sense, and it's not funny at all. Cafferty knew.

74. CNN Ousts Aaron Brown and Gives Slot to Anderson Cooper
CNN ousted its longtime prime-time anchor, Aaron Brown, today in favor of Anderson Cooper, who has received extensive media attention in the wake of his widely publicized coverage of Hurricane Katrina.

Jonathan Klein, the president of CNN/U.S., said today that he and Mr. Brown had mutually agreed that Mr. Brown would leave the cable news network because the new CNN lineup left "no options" for a program that would include Mr. Brown. "It is, unfortunately, a zero-sum game," Mr. Klein said.

The realigned CNN lineup will place Mr. Cooper's program "360," which had previously run at 7 p.m. Eastern time weeknights, in the 10 p.m. time period that had been occupied for the last four years by Mr. Brown's program, "Newsnight." Mr. Cooper's program will also expand to two hours, from 10 until midnight. CNN has experimented with that two-hour format over the past month, with Mr. Cooper joining Mr. Brown to serve as co-anchor of the program.

The audience levels for that program have increased markedly in the last month, a development that CNN attributed to Mr. Cooper's presence. In the 7 p.m. hour, where Mr. Cooper had previously worked, CNN will insert the final hour of its three-hour-long "Situation Room" program with Wolf Blitzer. That program has been running from 3 to 6 p.m. Eastern time each weekday. Now it will run from 4 to 6 p.m., leading into an hourlong newscast anchored by Lou Dobbs, with Mr. Blitzer coming back at 7 p.m. for one more hour.

Brown may be weak at times (and good at others) but Blitzer has long been a winger talkingpoint man.

Will never forget his coverage of the Wellstone crash - when within hours he does a spot with Sen. Kennedy and makes a point of focusing on the high (mourning) emotions of Kennedy as if intended to make Kennedy look weak.

I would take Brown over Wolfie in a minute. But would love Anderson doing the political commentary instead of Blitzer.

news show on cable. Klein dismantled that first; made Brown report a higher % of non news; made it much worse so that from a must see it became worth watching sometimes, and now this... If MSNBC is smart -- and he is willing -- there may be future for him there. I am really pissed. Cooper is good in some situations but he is no Aaron Brown, and I hardly ever watch 360° and now will do so even less because I resent the switch.

Here you can write your comment which is directly about Brown -- he is still listed there:

114. Good Riddance
Aaron was one of the worst of the "cheerleaders" for the war on Iraq. He excused the abuses of Iraqi prisoners-of-war while condemning the broadcast of American prisoners-of-war. When the editor of Al-Jazeera challenged him on it, he began raising his voice and attempting to drown out the editor. He was visibly orgasmic while watching "embedded" reporters give their accounts of the death and destruction our military was inflicting on the residents of Baghdad. I'm glad Brown is out--what a sad example of American "journalism."

117. Aaron Brown was a fine reporter and anchor
And CNN seriously pissed me off today with this decision. This is what I emailed them an hour ago:

Dear CNN,
I just heard that Aaron Brown is now leaving NewsNight. Let me say that I strongly disagree with this decision. In fact, it really pisses me off! While I think Anderson Cooper is a fine up-and-coming anchor, Aaron Brown had the serene thoughtfulness that gave the show real value. He had a great way of telling stories and "wrapping up" the day's news, and you could tell he took his job (and his stories) seriously. His style was just right for the end of the day, and I think you will come to regret this decision. I for one will not be tuning in anymore with regular frequency. At the very least I hope you keep Mr. Brown as a reporter, as he is one of the most excellent talents at CNN and by far the best storyteller. On the other end of that spectrum, Wolf Blitzer is mind-numbing, and he could never hold a candle.

Aaron, I had been a freshman in college for 9 days when September 11th happened, and I saw our country go crazy right before my eyes -- talk about two huge changes for me in the span of two weeks. Ever since then I have made it a point to watch your show, NewsNight, so that I knew and understood what the hell was going on in my world. You have done an amazing service for our country, for CNN, and for me personally. Thank you very much for your hard work these past four years, I will miss seeing you on at 9pm. Take care and God bless.

Then invited him to speak at my school. Damn CNN for being stupid, like giving Blitzer and Zhahn airtime and now this. Humbug.

CNN Anchor Brown to Exit
Rising star Anderson Cooper will fill the flagship prime-time slot. Wolf Blitzer also gets a bigger role.

By Matea Gold, Times Staff Writer

NEW YORK — CNN "NewsNight" anchor Aaron Brown is leaving the network after executives decided to give his flagship 10 p.m. broadcast to Anderson Cooper and create an expanded role for Wolf Blitzer in prime time, CNN announced Wednesday.

With the programming changes, Brown — who had anchored the 10 p.m. EST hour for the last four years — was in effect elbowed out.

"There weren't that many options left that made sense for someone of Aaron's stature," CNN/U.S. President Jonathan Klein said in an interview, calling Brown's departure "a mutual decision."

snip

However, some viewed him as "almost too pensive for television news," said former CNN correspondent Charles Bierbauer, now dean of the University of South Carolina's College of Mass Communications and Information Studies.
