BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide bomber detonated a minibus Wednesday in an outdoor market packed with shoppers ahead of a Muslim festival, killing about 20 people and wounding more than 60 in a Shiite town south of Baghdad. Six U.S. troops were killed, two in a helicopter crash west of the capital.

Also Wednesday, the U.S. command confirmed moves to step up training on how to combat roadside bombs — now the biggest killers of American troops in Iraq. At least 2,034 U.S. military service members have died since the Iraq conflict began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

The suicide bombing occurred about 5 p.m. in the center of Musayyib, a Euphrates River town 40 miles from Baghdad. On July 16, nearly 100 people died in a suicide bombing in front of a Shiite mosque in Musayyib.

Witnesses said the latest attack took place as the market was crowded in advance of the three-day Eid al-Fitr holiday that marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Many women and children were feared among the dead and wounded.

"They want to kill people before the feast," said Nagat Hassoun, 50, who lived a few hundred yards from the blast site. "They want people to stay at home and live in a tragedy. The aim is to cause sabotage. They're targeting the Shiites."

3. They have become very good at making effective bombs
They are no longer using pop cans full of black powder. Theyre much more sophisticated today and that aint good for our guys.

Lets just get out of Iraq. We are doing nothing but fanning flames over there.

5. Come on home
They will not come home until Bush gets the US military death count to at least 100,000! Problem is, he can't count above 10 without Carl Rove to help him!

"I hate them so much!"

7. That's because we left all the weapons and explosives un-guarded
We handed them the keys to the armory.

Just imagine if they also had a Wal-Mart and a Radioshack on every street corner in Iraq like we do here.

At one point, they were using devices made from radio-controlled toy cars to trigger bombs.

Next time you go to Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Radioshack, Toys R Us, etc., cruise down the aisle and make mental notes to yourself... "detonator... remote... remote... trigger... remote... sensor... trigger... Furby!"

My gawd, Furby has like half a dozen little bomb-triggering devices built right into his cute little body!

And then you will realize just how hard it must be to defend against those improvised devices.

18. Not only in Iraq
these terorists won't forget this crap we have done...they will be sure to be prepared to get back at the good ol' US in the future. If we are smart we will stear away from these stupid media scare tactics or else something bad might happen again and we just brush off the warnings (we would be back at square one)...

9. The pace has picked up: it's somewhere around 4 a day now.
With this kind of attrition (not to mention the wounded) it's going to be hard to keep unit cohesion everywhere, especially while mounting offensive actions near Syria.

This is so depressing. How long can conservatives blatantly ignore reality like this? They're living in a fantasy land on the economy, the war, the environment and the very viability of a stable society at home. Apparently everything just has to go smash in a huge and ugly way before anything will change. Even then, they'll blame others and use it as an excuse to grab more power.

What if the insurgents REALLY get serious? Right now they're wasting lots of energy on killing other Iraqis; if they concentrated on us it'd be truly ugly.

Sorry world, we suck.

Looks like things are getting much much worse, at a much faster pace.

How many more?

How many more have to die for a lie?

11. Is the the run-up to the election or something?
It's always the run-up to something over there. Do the people shopping at the mall right now care about any of this Iraq war stuff? No.

21. think about the social mechanics of planting a bomb in Iraq
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 09:36 PM by teryang
...compare it to the idea of commiting such an act in a society where law and order prevail. What is the difference?

In an ordered society, people call the police when they see suspicious or dangerous activity going on. They have a strong commitment to peaceful pursuit of their daily interests.

However, in a country where 50 percent are unemployed and large portions of the population are effectively without services and income, there is no commitment to order and peaceful pursuits. Tens of thousands are refugees. Tens of thousands have had loved ones killed directly and indirectly at American hands. No doubt a huge number of people exposed to "collateral damage" and "security sweeps" and tactical bombing by Americans, feel those same foreigners are responsible one way or the other for virtually all the hellish conditions. Therefore, efforts to strike blows against the occupier go unreported and not so secretly appreciated.

A guerilla force swims in the sea of people. This is how Iraq is similar to Vietnam.
