Dean Announces Dates for 2008 Dems Convention

WASHINGTON — The 2008 Democratic National Convention will be held from Monday, Aug. 25 through Thursday, Aug. 28 after the Summer Olympics in Beijing, Democratic chairman Howard Dean (search) announced Friday.

Democrats will decide where they will hold the the convention sometime after the 2006 midterm elections, party spokesman Josh Earnest said. Dean will appoint a committee to consider bids from various cities and come up with a recommendation, Earnest said.

The Summer Olympics in Beijing are set to start Aug. 8 and run for about two weeks.

2. Does Pgh have enough hotel space for something like that?
I moved from there several years ago, and I don't think they did then.

4. The New Convention Center was designed for such an event
but I too am not sure about hotels and lack of a big mass transit system sucks.

6. As much as I'd like Pittsburgh (live in Erie right now)...
I think it would be interesting to do it in a red state, in a relatively red city. You know, like the farce the Repubs pulled in New York. If Tom DeLay thinks Austin is too liberal for his trial, why not somewhere like that? Invade their territory, just like they did ours.

Any which way it happens, I want it to be close to me or I want to be part of it somehow. How do you get to be a delegate and all that?

Hmmm...anyway, just my humble opinion.

18. I like that idea...
and I'd like to go if it's held there.

Pittsburgh impresses me as a city of workers who know how to appreciate the Arts. They've got a world-class symphony, wonderful museums...so many cultural attractions.

3. How about Minnesota...the ONLY state
To vote Democratic in every Presidential election since 1972...

The only state to resist the Reagan sweeps

Home of the great Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondae, Eugene McCarthy, Orville Freeman, and Paul Wellstone!!

Seems like that kind of loyalty desrves some recognition!!!

5. Saint Paul / Mpls would be a nice venue
A lovely city, I lived there from 1990-1995. I have fond memories of days spent exploring the banks of the Mississippi.

7. I got another idea - hold the convention in Texas
I'd naturally pick Dallas for the selfish reason that I wouldn't have to drive very far, but Austin would be a great location because of the political makeup of the city and as a symbolic slap in the face for Nero.

There's also Houston, San Antonio, and Fort Worth to consider...

8. Come to Houston Texas
Edited on Fri Nov-04-05 05:49 PM by AnneD
We are pretty blue here. We have alot of Katrina people that are now DEM's, we have plenty of space and best of all........you'll be in Bush's back yard
Oh and don't worry about our concealed guns-even us DEM's here go to the firing range. Our state moto has been changed from Friendship to I'll Kick Your Ass. To be a DEM here you have to be tough so we can handle just about any orange alert the Bush fear mongers throw at us.

Derby-we bumped heads reaching for the same coin ;)

13. I second that! Maybe we could paint a donkey on the Space Needle.
Hey, they're gonna paint it either Husky purple-and-gold or Cougar crimson-and-gray depending on the results of the Hurricane Relief fundraiser...could be a good selling point to get the Dems here...

then that will report the facts and not go on and on about how the "Democrats don't have a message", among other such disparaging epitaphs!!

17. How about NYC?
Unlike the Republicans, we will actually be welcome there. Democrats outnumber Republicans 5-1 there, I believe.

19. The Convention needs to be in a Red State
We need to bring our message to the Red States who will be tired of Bush and the GOP in 2008. I'd recommend Denver. Phoenix would be another good city but it is still building an infrastructure (Convention Center, hotels, etc) to be able to host such an event.
Atlanta would be another great spot. So would Cleveland, St.Louis or Indianapolis.

20. Anywhere would be just fine with me
I was able to be a very tiny part of the Boston DNC, and would love the chance to travel to the next one.

There are a few places I would not want it to be, however:

Crawford, Texas
anywhere in Florida (not for political reasons, but because of the heat!!)
South Carolina
most places in Texas
Alaska

Some great thoughts about where we could do it:

New Mexico
Las Vegas
Hawaii
Sedona, Arizona
Buffalo, NY
NYC
Colorado
Cape Hatteras
Cape Cod
Atlanta

someplace scenic and pretty. :)
