Al-Qaeda threatens Iraq mayhem unless US-led assault halted

Militants loyal to Al-Qaeda in Iraq threatened to sharply intensify their campaign of violence unless government and US forces end a major offensive near the Syrian border, in an Internet statement posted Monday.

The statement also promised to destroy the homes of all Iraqi soldiers and government employees in response to recent comments by Defense Minister Saadun al-Dulaimi warning that those who sheltered insurgents in their homes would be considered targets.

"The organisation has decided to give the apostate government and itsmaster 24 hours to end their campaign against the Sunni people. After that they will only see from us the worst and something that's going to make the earth tremble under their feet," warned the statement signed in the name of spokesman Abu Maisara al-Iraqi.

4. This is propaganda
It attempts to say, yet again, that Al Qaeda is in Iraq (therefore 911 = Iraq; and Saddam = bin Laden) and links them to the Sunnis. Al Qaeda is a Wahabi sect. They aren't known to be allies:
http://www.shianews.com/hi/asia/news_id/0001060.php

And threatening "mayhem" in Iraq ...how we would notice any difference?!

17. Wahhabis are Sunnis.
They're also Salafi.

There are strong Salafist tendencies in W. Iraq.

6. Who knew they were holding back?
"The statement also promised to destroy the homes of all Iraqi soldiers and government employees in response to recent comments by Defense Minister Saadun al-Dulaimi warning that those who sheltered insurgents in their homes would be considered targets."

One way or another, this is propaganda (our's, theirs', who knows?). If they had the capability of doing this, why wouldn't they have done it already?

14. Al-Qaeda to launch 'offensive' in Iraq to counter US operation
Al-Qaeda's Iraq operation, led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, said it was launching an offensive in the west of Iraq in response to a major US and Iraqi military operation on the Syrian border.

'Your brothers in the military branch of Al-Qaeda in the Land of Two Rivers are launching today 'The Conquest of Vengeance' on behalf of the Sunni community in Al-Qaim,' the group said in an online statement which could not be independently verified. It stressed the group's 'right to defend the (Islamic) nation and avenge the honour and blood' of Iraqis.

The offensive came 'after the crusaders and the apostate government have not ceased their operations', referring to a warning it issued yesterday for US and Iraqi forces to halt their sweep against insurgents within 24 hours.

'After that they will only see from us the worst and something that's going to make the earth tremble under their feet,' the earlier statement said.

15. Has any real evidence emerged that Al Qaeda is in Iraq?
Edited on Tue Nov-08-05 11:48 AM by KurtNYC
On my scorecard I show that Zarqawi has never been seen in Iraq. How many Al Qaeda members have been captured or killed in Iraq? Zero?

Seems like more pushing of the fake links between Saddam and Osama. And it STILL gets ink.

http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0217-02.htm

Zarqawi is allegedly head of the ultra-orthodox Kurdish group Ansar al Islam NOT the Saudi Arabian-based Wahabi Al Qaeda.

18. "Al-Queda"
From time to time, different radical Muslim factions make outrageous statements consistent with Qutbist ideology. Then other factions launch attacks on Western targets. From this prospective, all references to "Al-Queda" mean is that general situation gets worse. As for the links between different rebel factions and their operational significance, the burden of proof lies on those who promote them. We simply don't know what "Al-Queda" stands for in real life.
