Dean Statement on the Resounding Democratic Victories Across the Country

11/8/2005 10:46:00 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To: National Desk, Political Reporter

Contact: Karen Finney of Democratic National Committee, 202-863-8148

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement on the resounding Democratic victories in elections in New Jersey, Virginia, and across the country:

"The resounding victories tonight by Jon Corzine and Tim Kaine have sent a powerful message that when Democrats stand up for what we believe in, we win. They showed that the values and priorities of the Democratic Party are the values and priorities of the American people.

"Jon Corzine and Tim Kaine were strong candidates who offered vision and leadership based on the shared values and priorities of the voters of New Jersey and Virginia. They worked hard to earn the trust and the votes of the people in their states by not taking a single vote or voter for granted.

"Also tonight, voters all across the country delivered a resounding message: Americans are tired of the politics of hate and divisiveness, and voted for strong Democratic candidates who offered true leadership for their states and communities. These candidates showed exactly what our party is going to do to stand up and win in 2006."

33. There's no problem with Chairman Dean.
He's doing exactly what he is supposed to do...talking about how the voters supported Democrats in this election. Democrats truly are the party of family values and working class Americans.

It was not just in two states. In Pittsburgh a Democratic mayor was elected today by an overwhelming majority. Democrats also picked up at least 2 seats on the city council.

There were small victories all over the country...when added up they equal a big victory.

Yay. Yay. Yay.

Yes, when you add them up they are greater than the 2 main, but.
I don't see where we can say that the country believes that same way yet.

45. LI Dems have banner night
Edited on Wed Nov-09-05 12:16 AM by For PaisAn
This is HUGE. Long Island NY has been a Republican stronghold for many years (at least 40 years) but things have been turning. A majority of Long Islanders are fed up with the cronyism and corruption that is the Republican Party.

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/longisland/ny-liover1109,0,333622.story?coll=ny-main-breakingnewslinks

I too am still cautious in my optimism but tonight we have reason to celebrate.

85. Excellent results for Long Island
- long the home of some of the worst GOPers. Peter King - tread carefully now...
I think these results are driven by two factors in addition to good Dem candidates:
1. GOP local corruption and incompetence
2. GOP national corruption and incompetence.

9. Someone forgot to tell Howard about Texas...
Our anti-gay amendment has apparently passed with overwhelming support.

Sorry, but VA + NJ <> nationwide victory. We Texans aren't feeling very celebratory right now.

Still, congrats to Corzine and Kaine. It's a start.

All Gov. Rick Perry has to do is sign the amendment, and it's state law. Redundant state law, at that.

Boy, am I glad DemocracyFest was in Austin this year. I hope they come back someday - we need their help badly.

I'm in a BLUE state, and last cycle we allowed the bastards to amend our state CONSTITUTION to exclude gay marriage, and it was already against the law.

I blame the push from the churches here. They spent MILLIONS and had otherwise good dems voting badly.

Texas may always have had some maverick outlaw status but it has been the home of democrats for decades. This current phase of Bush driven corrupted values and perverted versions of Christian community cannot hold forever. It is hollow and rotten at the core. People need help to see healthier alternatives to the politics of divide and despise.
BushRover too will pass.

The Dem who endorsed Bush lost big time to another Dem. A small victory but all these victories add up to a lot. Especially since Bush actually comapaigned for Kilgore and it may actually have HURT him. I love it but I am depressed about the Texas Amendmet 2. Bigotry now enshrined in the state Constitution. Jesus wept.

Have you seen the latest poll numbers for Hackett. He's up by 9.9% in a matchup with DeWine. That's far better than Brown's numbers. Check it out:

It was a tough day for R.O.N., but I don't think Ohio should give up on it. It may take a couple of tries to get these through.

2006 will be a good year for Ohio! :hi:

Statements by RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman on Election 2005 Outcomes

11/8/2005 11:16:00 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To: National and State desks, Political Reporter

Contact: Tracey Schmitt of the Republican National Committee Communications Staff, 202-863-8614

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following are statements by RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman on the Election 2005 outcomes:

:nopity: Virginia

"Jerry Kilgore ran a tough, focused campaign for Governor of Virginia. Going into the election, Republicans understood that the Commonwealth had a popular Democrat Governor with high approval numbers. Although it was a difficult road, Jerry's team communicated his principled message and got more people involved in the political process. Jerry and Marty have served the people of Virginia well and Republicans are proud of the campaign they waged in The Old Dominion."

"As a party, we are encouraged by the election of Bill Bolling as Virginia's next Lieutenant Governor. We are also confident the final returns will demonstrate that Bob McDonnell will serve as the Commonwealth's next Attorney General. I look forward to working with both of them."

:nopity: New Jersey

"Doug Forrester ran a strong and spirited campaign for Governor of New Jersey. His efforts to speak to local issues such as corruption and property taxes directly impacted Garden State citizens and garnered the support of many voters. Doug and Andrea deserve deep admiration for running such a tough race and New Jersey is a better state because of their campaign."

New York City

:puke: "Michael Bloomberg is the kind of leader Republicans are proud to support, and we are thrilled that he will be returning as Mayor of New York City. Mayor Bloomberg's achievement is particularly impressive when one takes into account that there are 5 Democrats for every 1 Republican in the city. Tonight's victory is testimony to the fact that voters are more concerned with the candidate and the platform that best represents their views. As mayor of America's largest city, Bloomberg's record speaks to fiscal responsibility and decisive action. As New York's Republican Mayor, he will continue the amazing trend of GOP leadership in The Big Apple for the 13th consecutive year."

61. re: New York
I think it speaks volumes that New Yorkers ARE willing to vote for a Republican, if they're doing a good enough job. Therefore, we are not simply against Bush because we're partisan, or because we "hate" him. We are against him because his administration has been disasterous in every conceivable way.

Also bear in mind that Bloomberg was a Democrat until fairly recently, and he is pretty moderate in his views (almost like a closet Democrat as it were). Not too hard to see why New Yorkers voted for the guy.

At least he not ideologically confrontational. That is why he has been acceptable to NYers.

And if the rest of the GOP admire NY dems for being able to vote for a rethug then give NY its fair share of tax dollars. Where is the Homeland Security money? Where is the support for first responders in the big cities? Where are the subsidies for mass transit? Where is the money promised after 9/11?

58. You should post that separately. Wonder if it will get coverage.
I like the way the conference includes the DGA chair, that is very appropriate.

49. Election problems? Report them here- important
The election problems aren't over- the system is still a mess. so it important to monitor and be active in preventing corrupt practices.
Here's how:

If you experience any problem casting your ballot -- finding the polling place, voter intimidation, accessibility issues, voting machine problems, provisional ballot
issues, etc. -- or you witness anyone having voting problems, please immediately
call 1-866-OUR-VOTE to report the problem. Please let others know too... the same number works nationwide.

Verified Voting Foundation volunteers and staff have developed a new version of the "Election Incident Reporting System" (EIRS) to record all problems reported to 1-866-OUR-VOTE. Since 2004, hundreds of organizations and thousands of individuals in the United States have used EIRS to help protect our right to vote and assure that every vote is counted as cast. If you'd like to know more about
EIRS, please visit VerifiedVotingFoundation.org and Voteprotect.org

97. That is a very important statement
Let's hope the Democratic incumbents will take it to heart in next year's congressional elections and run on the values that brought them to politics in the first place.

This is how you take your country back as well...from the ground up.

65. Yes! ...and despite their cheating, and while we played fairly.
Now we need to chase them down and finish them off.
They started this war. Now we must finish it. And I don't mean Iraq, of course.

66. Thanks, Paine! We can pair this with Harry Reid's powerful statement today
to and about the Bush Administration. In clear, strong language he called for a statement from the WH that Libby and any others in Treasongate WILL NOT RECEIVE PRESIDENTIAL PARDONS (the only way we will get the truth). Then he blasted the evil doings of Dick Cheney. In this fine VIDEO CLIP from Coundown tonight, Keith Olbermann says Harry is a ball of fire, and he's right. (The second part of the video is on the screaming WH press conference with Scotty McClellan refusing to answer questions about torture.)

Here's the VIDEO link (Windows Media) from Can-o-Fun:

Let's hope the Dems are FINALLY going to join the vertebrates.

69. What states were holding elections for governors?
I've been trying to find out through mainstream news groups, but
of course they take it for granted that everyone knows.

I know Virginia and New Jersey, and there was an election for mayor
in New York, and Arnie is campaigning on special issues, but what
else is happening?

77. It's a great day to be a Democrat!!
I am so thrilled our party did so well in yesterdays elections. Now we can clearly see that the tide is turning and Americans in droves are fed up with Rethuglican rule.

All I can say is where were you last November??

and providing money through his PAC, to many of the candidates who won also. I am personally aware of two visits to NJ and a visit to CA to campaign against the Union campaign donation issue that was happily defeated. Both Clinton's also did some campaigning. I especially like Dean and Kerry though, because both are very big supporters of the grass-roots movement. I give $$ to both of their efforts.
