Moderate Republicans balk at refuge drilling
Some worried about opening up state coastal areas

WASHINGTON - A House Republican push to pass federal budget cuts is being stymied by opposition from moderate Republicans to a provision that would allow oil and natural gas drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

In a letter delivered to the House leadership on Tuesday, 25 GOP lawmakers requested that the refuge drilling approval be removed from the budget bill that is designed to help defray the costs of hurricane relief.

The House GOP leadership has tentatively planned a vote for Thursday on $54 billion in cuts to entitlements, including reductions to social programs such as Medicaid and food stamps.

The measure includes $3.7 billion in additional federal revenue from opening the Alaskan refuge and giving coastal states the authority to approve offshore oil and gas drilling.

4. This election should send a loud message to the Republican party
You had better start listening to the moderates or you will lose all of your power. Americans are sick of far right extremism and corruption.

5. Well, good, because up here in Canada we're completely against it.
So's our government. Maybe we should just say, "OK, smart-asses, go ahead and drill -- how are you going to get your one year's worth of oil down to the lower 48? Through a pipeline? Through WHICH country? I don't think so."

Also, until the US pays back the $5 billion it owes us from excessive duties on Canadian softwood lumber, as adjudged by NAFTA panel after NAFTA panel, we should threaten to cut off all shipments of oil, natural gas, and electricity to the US, and be prepared to follow through on that threat.

And finally, if Bush keeps vetoing anti-torture legislation, we should break off diplomatic relations with your country. We don't wish to be associated with people like that.

We Canadians are mad as hell, and we're not going to take this anymore. You think you have trouble now -- well, just wait. We tell visitors from the middle east, "You think you have grievances against the United States? Try living next door to them." There's simmering discontent up here about the high-handed way we've been treated, and it's about to boil over. We've been nice, if maybe a little smug, up to now, but Mr Bush should realize there are so many ways we could fuck your country over if he keeps this up, that he should tread very carefully with us and do what he's told.

Amazing... thought since it passed in the Senate it was over.

If you're interested in helping, please spread the word, especially to friends in PA, WA and MN, three states with key swing votes.
