Democrats Win Elections in NJ, Va., Calif.
AP - 1 hour, 2 minutes ago

Democrats cleaned up big in off-year elections from New Jersey to California, sinking the candidate who embraced President Bush in the final days of the Virginia governor's campaign. They also turned back all four of GOP Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's efforts to reshape state government.

2. and Dean has a comment

"I believe national Republican politics ... really had an effect in Virginia and California," said Democratic Party Chairman
Howard Dean. Voters "don't like the abuse of power, they don't like the culture of corruption. They want the nation to go in a different way."

Republicans warned against reading too much into two governorships that started the day in Democratic hands and ended that way. Virginia Gov. Mark Warner was barred by law from seeking a second term, and New Jersey acting Gov. Richard J. Codey opted not to run.

"It's not some type of trend," said GOP Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, noting that both seats were won by Democrats in 2001 when Bush's popularity was high. Still, he acknowledged the defeats — and said they could help rally the GOP base next year. "I don't think anybody will be complacent now."

Both governors' races were marked by record-breaking spending and vicious personal attacks.

IMHO, it works. Now let's see some bumper stickers with the red circle/slash elephant and "FIGHT the Culture of Corruption"....

34. link didn't work today, must have changed headline
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 01:49 PM by Born Free
Both links came up with "Democrats Win Elections in N.J. and Va." dated November 9th and the first sentence was "Democrats cleaned up big in off-year elections from New Jersey to California,"

However, a Google news search brought up "Democrats Clean up in US Elections"

5. And let's not forget the many little races
School boards, city councils and all manner of smaller races went on last night. Ballot initiatives too. I think a closer look, a more granular look, at how things really went would reveal it was a bigger night for Dems than was thought at first glance.

21. Precisely - 'all the little races.....'
I'll gladly take the Big 3 wins, but all the local stuff going on in the country is what encourages me!
Look at St. Paul's (ex)Bush-loving Democrat mayor - replaced by a real Democrat.

24. San Diego appears to still have a lot to learn...
I guess their corruption only has to get worse before we see any real change here, if it all...

Hoping we can replace Cunningham with a Dem later, but I'm not holding my breath here. These people tend to worry more about having cross monuments and a new stadium for the Chargers than making sure they have a decent and honest government.

10. By george, I think we've hit the trifecta!
I'm a little dazed this morning, too, but still exultant!

rove THIS!

bush isn't just a formally=designated lame duck, he's now a sitting duck. And he has nobody to blame but himself.

ONWARD TO 2006!!!

We have them on the ropes. Now is NO TIME TO GET COMPLACENT!!!!

DON'T give them a chance to catch their breath.

DON'T give them a few moments to regroup.

DON'T give them time to shake it off and pick themselves back up.

DON'T run around the ring dancing the victory dance YET (while the enemy gets - AND USES - the lucky break you just gave him when you turned your back).

DON'T assume, for an instant, that these people will admit defeat and behave as chastened, reformed, apologetic gentlemen.

DON'T assume they'll start playing by the rules and run cleaner, above-board campaigns.

DON'T assume they've learned their lesson and have been born again into the light. They won't get any religion from this except more extremism.

DON'T trust that the ultimate victory will just be handed to us because it's our turn and we've proven that we're deserving.

We're going to have to earn back EVERY MILLIMETER of this country as we RESCUE AMERICA from its five-year bush hostage hold, and its eleven-year period of captivity under republi-CON repression.

We STILL have a couple of substantial wars ahead, and the only thing the enemy can be relied upon to do is not to go quietly - OR submissively.

And don't expect them EVER to admit defeat.

11. NJ Governors Race
According to analysts on NPR, one of the things that helped tip the NJ governor's race in favor of Democrat Corzine is when the GOP used Corzine's ex-wife to attack him in TV ads. Even by NJ standards, that was over the top.

"... dont' vote for him - he was lousy in bed..."
---
In my area in PA, which is usually even Dems-Reps, there was a Democratic sweep - 2 county executives, 2 mayors, a whole Dem. city council - each one was against strong well-funded GOP candidates.

13. The big question is
our people hurting enough? I have seen since the Republicans have been in power we have lost more than we have gained. The big picture is that the Democrats must and that means now promote that we need to get America back on track. They must get ready for the remarks of the right wing that the Democrats have no message. We do have a message we don't what the Republicans running the middle class Americans into the ground. We need to go back to the basics we need to support are middle class good paying jobs, affordable health care, good education for our children. We have seen no help for the hard working people in this country we have lost jobs overseas, we pay more in health care more in energy costs and the big companies our making record profits. I won't even get into the illegal war that we are now in. We need a clear message and we need it now!!!

15. Checking other political fora, the RWers are saying "it's status quo"
They're saying "it's no big deal".

The Propagandist was doing all he could for Kilgore and NJ Dems had some issues with the previous administration that put that one in jeopardy.

I laugh in the face of these dismissive punks. They're crying in their beers while they try to hold up the false bravado!

30. It was also good to see Dems pick up local city council seats as well.
It's important to build from the ground up. Starting with local governments will translate into regional and national victories for the Democrats.

It's good to see the people finally waking up.

33. Dems Swept Eastern PA
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 11:58 AM by JPZenger
Almost all the big contested races in eastern PA. were won by Democrats. This is significant because eastern PA runs about 50-50 dems-Repubs.

For example, a young Dem. beat a former 2 term GOP mayor for the mayor of Allentown. A young Dem. beat a 2 term GOP incumbent mayor in the city of Lancaster. A young Dem. beat an incumbent County Executive in Lehigh County (Allentown). A Dem. beat a well-funded Republican for County Executive in Northampton County (Bethlehem). Dems swept all the city council races in Allentown and Bethlehem, and most of the contested county commissioner races in the area.

Energetic Dem. mayors were re-elected in Scranton, Bethlehem and York.
