Senate rejects 9/11 style commission to review prison abuse

Tue Nov 8, 7:19 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Senate rejected draft legislation that would have created a blue ribbon commission to examine whether torture was used at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison and other US-run overseas prisons.

The measure, which was defeated by a party line 43 to 55 vote, was debated as an amendment to a 491.6 billion dollar defense spending bill for the upcoming fiscal year.

The measure on creating the commission was authored by Carl Levin, the top Democrat on the Armed Services Committee in the Republican-led Senate.

Speaking on the Senate floor earlier Tuesday, another Democratic backer of the bill, Ted Kennedy, said the legislation would help ensure proper treatment of inmates at US-run detention facilities around the world.
