Detroit mayor Kilpatrick re-elected
http://www.clickondetroit.com/politics/5282644/detail.html

Incumbent Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick suddenly pulled ahead over challenger Freman Hendrix on the last stretch of Detroit's Decision 2005.

With 100 percent reporting, Kilpatrick had 117,354, or 53 percent of the vote, and Hendrix had 103,446 votes, or 47 percent. The change was reported after Hendrix showed a 10-point lead in early counting.

Kilpatrick, in somewhat of a victory speech before all the precincts were counted, promised Detroiters there would be changes and that the city and those who voted for him would be proud.

4. Detroiters are using the South Park gnomes' plan
to move the city forward:
Step One: Force the city of Detroit into receivership.
Step Two: ???
Step Three: PROFIT!!

Don't ask me. I'm over here in western Wayne County wondering WTF happened. Personally, I think it's a bad idea to let the thieves have access to the coffers for 4 more years, but I guess that's just me. If Detroiters don't mind being bent over and sodomized without lube for another 4 years, hey, I always say that it's none of my business what consenting adults do!

7. I can't fathom what was on the mind of Detroit city voters ...
I was so hopeful that improved leadership would help that city "turn the corner"

While it is city resident's business what they do sans lubrication, I am saddened by the impact Kilpatrick's awful leadership will continue to have on the entire Detroit metro area.

Hendrix was viewed as the outsider (unfairly) and Kwame was viewed as the man of the people. This election became a referendum on racism and black political power instead of a referendum on Kwame Kilpatrick's performance.

It's easy for whites to dismiss this outcome as an unfortunate example of Kilpatrick simply playing the race card and not get it, but what Detroiters said with this vote is that discrimination is real. A majority of Detroiters saw attacks on the Mayor by the media as attacks on them by whites who don't respect them or their city. Fairly or unfairly, Hendrix got painted as a proxy for the white business class interests in the suburbs, and Detroit's voters said that they didn't trust him or those people more than they didn't trust the mayor. There's a reason for that even though it's unfair to Hendrix. Even though I had hoped Hendrix would win because I thought he was clearly the better candidate for the day to day job of managiong the city, it's not an unbelievable result and it's not irrational. And I'm listening. Unfortunately, I think most suburban whites will be inclined to interpret the result as further evidence that Detroit is just fucked and wonder why we should give money to the city when there's no indication that thos eresources will be put to use effectively and efficiently. And that's sad, because at the end of the day, Detroit needs serious financial help and in everyone's best interest in the Metro Area that Detroit rebounds. More importantly, I think it's a moral imperative that we fix the extreme poverty and inequality that is found in Detroit. So as someone who lives outside the city but is concerned with the plight of the city, I gotta listen to this message from the Detroit voters and respect it and think about what can I do to make this situation better. I think it starts with respecting Detroit and it's citizens, regardless of who is the Mayor and trying to do what I can to build trust across racial lines.

8. Financial mismanagement, abuse of his public trust
Lots of stories about the mayor using the city credit card and city funds to splurge on himself and his family (expensive cars, vacations, gifts, fancy dinners). Also the city auditor has been highly critical of his financial stewardship of the city which has a deficit of hundreds of millions of dollars and is on the brink of receivership and a takeover by the state(even though that is unlikely to happen for political reasons).

We have missed him at the parties downtown. He tried to act cleaned up for the past few months. Guess it is back to the party circuit.
