Miller At Gates, Negotiating Exit With Sulzberger

The end of The New York Times’ five-week standoff with reporter Judith Miller appears to be near. As of Nov. 8, the two sides were closing in on a severance agreement, according to sources familiar with the negotiation.

...

The rank and file shared the executive editor’s stance. “There is a quiet rebellion in the newsroom,” a longtime staffer said. “They don’t want her back.”

...

Ms. Miller and her lawyers signaled that they were specifically displeased with—and might consider legal action about—Mr. Keller’s use of the word “entanglement” in his memo to describe Ms. Miller’s connections with now-indicted Vice Presidential aide I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby. In the light of long-circulating gossip about Ms. Miller’s romantic life, that word choice led to widespread speculation and mockery. In a follow-up phone conversation, Ms. Miller described the insinuation as “completely untrue.”

“Many people—many other journalists—assumed that there was an improper relationship,” Ms. Miller said in Sag Harbor. “Many people assumed there was a sexual relationship, which is one reason I’m so insistent on that, on his clarifying . I’ll be diplomatic, O.K.? I call it a correction. And at The New York Times, we call it a correction …. But I’ll settle for a, quote, ‘clarification.’”

1. why don't they just fire her ass...?
Surely they can justify that based on the broadly inaccurate nature of her reporting during the run up to the war against Iraq?

2. Difficult in New York...
what with unions. If she worked for, say, the Miami Herald, or some other paper in a right-to-work state, she'd have been fired a long time ago.

10. Yup. It's a two-way street...
people like Miller get protection that they may not deserve in our eyes. But everyone else in the Newspaper Guild also gets protection from employer abuses.
I'll deal with it being a pain in the butt to fire Judy Miller if it means a better workplace for all employees.

16. That has nothing to do with it
NYT's owner Sulzberger and Miller are in this together.

The only way to get rid of Miller is to get rid of him, which is difficult since he's the publisher. It sounds like there is some sort of deal coming where Sulzberger will give up the reigns, which would be MAJOR NEWS for the NYT's.

19. Sure it does.
Miller and the paper are currently in the middle of severance negotiations, according to both the NY Observer story quoted in the OP and the story in Editor and Publisher that followed it (http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001476144).

This is because New York is a unionized state. In Miami, she'd have already been fired (see: Jim Defede)

21. Maybe for the rank and file
but dear Judy has been in bed with Sulzberger for long time. She didn't need no stinking union to protect her.

6. judy, you've lost your credibility as an impartial reporter who should
have gotten all sides of the WMD story. Instead you worked for that liar, LIBBY, and bolstered BushCo's fraudulent case for war. Journalism 101: no good journalist gets one side of ANY story, especially one so important to our nation.

7. She must have the goods on the paper's various "improper relationships"
or pictures of Sulzeberger in bed with a goat.
If I were her boss the only question to be decided would be whether she got tossed out on her ass or her ear.

settle for a, quote, ‘clarification.’

NO! If she expects a clarification, then she'd better come clean and tell the truth (if she even knows what truth is anymore).

12. Incredible--this woman aids and abets the administration in a march to
an unjustified, unsupportable war, she serves as a propaganda tool for BushCo, and she is WORRIED ABOUT people thinking she SCREWED SCOOTER???? THAT is her MAIN CONCERN?????

Judy, Judy, Judy, YOU SCREWED THE COUNTRY!!!!!!! You screwed us out of billions, you screwed us out of a Kerry presidency, you screwed THOUSANDS of families of the dead and the wounded, and you screwed those young kids in uniform most of all.

Put that witch's picture up next to Tokyo Rose. Or in the dictionary next to TREASON.

She clearly has NO SHAME.

11. that trial balloon of 'returning to the newsroom'

was shot to pieces before it could even be inflated, let alone floated.

That Maureen Dowd column ('Woman of Mass Destruction'), that's about close to a public axe murder of a writing world persona followed by a pulping of the corpse with a baseball bat and then running it over with an eighteen wheeler as you get in the literary world.

That was Miller's obituary and a bulldozer pushing dirt on and driving over the corpse/grave. While she was still physically breathing.

Miller going into the newsroom again would have involved her with a sword and Dowd charging her with a knife- and everyone there else pulling one out too. And the world cheering at the outcome.

15. But hey, Judy is waving her 'forgotten' notebook, wagging it, indeed,
and bellowing "I did NOT have sexual relations with that Scooter...Mister Libby!!!!"

Now, I am fond of old Bill, and think he was a great president, but that shit did not work for him, either. And we know why he did it--he knew his spouse would KILL him. And I wouldn't blame Hillary if she clocked the old dog, but good.

Judy is probably worried that the old man she is married to, he, who went on a cruise while she was jailed, might just want to file for divorce after learning the dirty details, so she is preparing an aggressive counterattack. That would probably have a detrimental effect on her checkbook and lifestyle, seeing as her employment prospects won't be especially stellar in future.

I still can't get over the fact that Judy was living with Les Aspin when he was SECDEF under Clinton (he's dead now, I always wondered if that 'aspen' reference was actually an ASPIN reference).

She's one busy bee, eh?

The NYTimes has only gone downhill since this talentless heir (as most heirs are) was handed the publisher's job.
