Top Rove aide ‘critical’ in CIA probe

WASHINGTON D.C. – Filipino American Susan Ralston, chief of-staff to presidential adviser Karl Rove, is one of nearly two dozen White House officials – including President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney – believed to have knowledge about the outing of Central Intelligence Agency operative agent Valerie Plame.

Ralston, Rove’s right-hand man, is scheduled to appear again before Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald who is investigating the circumstances surrounding the leak of Plame’s identity in the media.

....

Ralston appears to be a person of critical interest in the investigation, just like her boss Rove.

...

As Rove’s assistant covering for him from policy pronouncements down to housekeeping issues, Ralston works very closely with George Bush’s senior adviser.

Looks like the Fitz investigation is still "on going"....

1. Ralston/Rove is also tangled with Abramoff
http://www.hillnews.com/thehill/export/TheHill/Comment/JoshMarshall/092205.html

excerpt:

Then there’s Susan Ralston, Karl Rove’s longtime executive assistant and White House gatekeeper. I called the White House yesterday to see if she was still Rove’s executive assistant and was told only that she now worked for Rove “in another capacity.”

There’s been some press discussion of her grand-jury appearances in the Plame case but much less about her likely role in the Abramoff investigation.

Before signing on to work for Rove, she had the same job with Abramoff — overseeing his various escapades and operations at Preston Gates and then later at Greenberg Traurig. She oversaw the distribution of the skyboxes and all the rest. So it’s very hard to see how she hasn’t been pulled into the Justice Department investigation as well.

Let’s not forget either that Ralston herself reportedly had a special arrangement with Norquist, who gave her directions on who should access to Rove — in many cases clients of Abramoff also working with Norquist got the nod.

Norquist down too. If not him then Abramoff's trial. I want them all in the gulag, eating bad food and wearing orange jumpsuits and sleeping on 10 thread count sheets on hard lumpy mattresses for the rest of their lives before they are tried for treason and shot on the wh lawn at noon on any day of the week.

4. Ralston is about to be shredded into Purina! Get it?
A hidden hand threw a wrench into Fitzgerald's finely tuned engine of truth in the eleventh hour.

Fitzgerald has now completed the repair on his engine of truth, and he is ready to serve justice on the hand that threw the wrench.

Once this is done, Fitzgerald will get back to the business of indicting based on whether he has determined that crimes were committed.

8. Meet Susan Ralston:
--snip

In one of the two appearances before the Special Prosecutor, she (Ralston) and another Rove aide, Israel Hernandez, were asked why Rove’s phone conversation with journalist Cooper was not recorded in the logbook. The response was that Cooper did not dial Rove directly but was switched to his line by the operator.

--snip

At 37, Ralston, a graduate of management, had worked as assistant to Jack Abramoff, a powerfully connected lobbyist, at the Preston Gates and Ellis and later at Greenberg Taurig law and lobbying firms. Story had it that Abramoff, indicted on alleged corruption charges involving, among others, former Republican majority leader Tom DeLay, had offered Ralston to Rove when the latter was looking for an efficient and trusted assistant.

Before working in the nation’s capital, she was an office administrator for a commercial and real estate firm in Chicago, Ill.

--snip

Karl is an amazing person to work for. I feel very, very fortunate to be in an office where so much is happening,” Ralston told this reporter in a 2003 interview.

9. Ralston was Jack Abramoff's Secretary before she went to Rove
She's a key holder, and her testimony may determine whether Fitz convenes another GJ. As a living link between several enormous GOP scandals, Ralston is sure to be a star witness. She is surely someone we will be hearing more about.

Is Fitz still deciding whether to "borrow" another GJ?

This from the WasPost, Sept. 23, about the Abramoff scandal and its links to the collapse of Tyco Int'l:http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/20...

Tyco Exec: Abramoff Claimed Ties to Administration

By R. Jeffrey Smith
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, September 23, 2005; Page A06

Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff bragged two years ago that he was in contact with White House political aide Karl Rove on behalf of a large, Bermuda-based corporation that wanted to avoid incurring some taxes and continue receiving federal contracts, according to a written statement by President Bush's nominee to be deputy attorney general.

SNIP

Lobbying disclosure statements filed by Abramoff listing his work for Tyco cite the "Executive Office of the President" as one of his lobbying targets on the tax and contracts issues. Others were the Department of Commerce, the General Services Administration and Congress. Greenberg Traurig records submitted to Tyco describe specific contacts with the White House legislative office, a source familiar with the matter said yesterday.

Rove's personal assistant at the time, Susan Ralston, formerly worked as Abramoff's secretary. It could not be learned yesterday whether she was among those contacted by any of the 14-person Greenberg team recorded as working on the Tyco account.

The Philippine News has more in an article today about this very discreet operative's background:http://www.philippinenews.com/news/view_article.html?ar...

Ralston has been promoted to Special Assistant to the President and Assistant to the President Senior Adviser with an annual salary of $92,000. She is married to Troy Ralston, executive director of a graduate school of management.

Karl is an amazing person to work for. I feel very, very fortunate to be in an office where so much is happening,” Ralston told this reporter in a 2003 interview.

This is an extract of her bio at SourceWatch, Center for Media & Democracy:http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Susan_B._Ral...

Susan Bonzon Ralston, Special Assistant to the President & Assistant to the Senior Advisor Karl Rove, was Jack Abramoff's executive assistant at Preston Gates and Ellis and later at the Greenberg Traurig law and lobbying firm, where "she served as the assistant director of governmental affairs. Before moving to the nation’s capital, she was an office administrator for M&J Wilkow, Ltd., a commercial real estate firm in Chicago, Illinois." <1> (http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/week_2005_09_... )<2> (http://www.asianfortune.com/aug04/Articles/PROFILE%20Su... )

"Ms. Ralston assists Mr. Rove in overseeing the strategic planning, political affairs, public liaison, and intergovernmental affairs efforts of the White House." <3> (http://www.philippinefestival.org/pfc2003ma12.html )

Ralston is cited as being the highest ranking Filipino-American in the Bush White House. The Philippine News Online reported (http://www.philippinenews.com/news/view_article.html?ar... ) September 22, 2004, that "Ralston, who was promoted special assistant to the president last July, is also actively involved in courting the Asian American vote."

Skybox Keeper
"On April 20th, 2000, Jack Abramoff's personal assistant Susan Ralston wrote a memo (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/docs/ralston.memo.4202000.... ) outlining guidelines for doling out skybox seats to clients, politicians and Capitol Hill staffers," Josh Marshall wrote.
Gatekeeper
"As presidential adviser Karl Rove set up shop in the West Wing in 2001, he was looking for an assistant to serve as the trusted gatekeeper of his new fiefdom. Superlobbyist and Republican fundraiser Jack Abramoff was happy to lend a hand. Abramoff knew just the right person for the job: his own assistant, Susan Ralston. She interviewed with Rove and got the position," Peter H. Stone wrote (http://nationaljournal.com/about/njweekly/stories/2004/... ) in the March 27, 2004, National Journal. "For a staunch conservative and smooth GOP operative like Abramoff, losing a valuable aide was well worth the opportunity to ingratiate himself with the president's senior political adviser."

Ralston "was of course one of many Team Abramoff players who got seconded into the administration. Given the close relationship between Abramoff and Grover Norquist, it's probably not surprising that she also had an arrangement with Norquist in which he gave her direction on who to let through to Rove," Josh Marshall wrote (http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/week_2005_09_... ) in his Talking Points Memo September 21, 2005.
Marshall, being "a little unclear on whether Ralston still works for Rove," called (http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/week_2005_09_... ) the White House September 21, 2005, and "was told that she's no longer his 'executive assistant'. When asked what her title was was told only that she now worked for him 'in a different capacity.'" "When the Plame affair went before a Federal grand jury, Ralston was compelled to testify, and had to leave the job with Rove," Anton Chaitkin wrote (http://www.larouchepub.com/other/2005/3233abramoff_indi... ) in the August 26, 2005, issue of Executive Intelligence Review.

Plamegate
Along with former Rove aide Israel Hernandez, Susan B. Ralston testified before a separate federal grand jury "about grand jury testimony given on July 13 by Matthew Cooper, a reporter for Time magazine," David Johnston reported (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/03/politics/03leak.html?... ) in the August 3, 2005, Washington Post. "Cooper has said that he testified about a July 11, 2003, conversation with Mr. Rove" in which the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame "was discussed."
"The reason Ralston, 37, was asked to testify remains unclear, but it has heightened suspicions that the locus of the investigation still centers on Rove," Johnston wrote (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/20... ), although he did say that "At one point, the aides were asked why Mr. Cooper's call to Mr. Rove was not entered in Mr. Rove's office telephone logs. There was no record of the call, the person who has been briefed said, because Mr. Cooper did not call Mr. Rove directly, but was transferred to his office from a White House switchboard."

Bush-Cheney '04
Ralston told (http://www.asianfortune.com/aug04/Articles/PROFILE%20Su... ) Jennie L. Ilustre in a pre-presidential election 2004 interview for Asian Fortune that she was then "the White House Liaison to the Bush-Cheney ’04 (BC’04) campaign. As such, she has been very much involved in the reelection campaign. 'I work on the coordination of all activities between the campaign and the White House, including the Republican National Convention,... I spend 95 per cent of my physical time at the White House, but do go over to the campaign headquarters for meetings.'"

Abramoff-Reed Indian Gambling Scandal
Ralston, "who worked for Jack Abramoff, the K Street super lobbyist that allegedly swindled Indian tribes out of millions of dollars with the assistance of Ralph Reed, former head of the Christian Coalition, is a trusted Rove aide. The buzz is, Ralston is the tie that binds Rove to the Indian casino swindle as tightly as U.S. Rep. Tom Delay (R-TX)," Blogger "Amy" wrote (http://derrick.dx266.com/cgi-bin/mb5/789.html ) August 4, 2005.

Depends upon how you define prostitution. I'd say, quite possibly, she's been keeping an eye on both of them.

Remember Leandro Aragoncillo, the Filipino spy in the OVP, a story that came out in early October just as speculation about a Rove indictment was heating up? Nobody's been able to figure what angle that one came from. Maybe, there's some connection with Ralston, Aragoncillo, and the FBI?

27. Imelda Marcos, too.
Right now I'm still sorting all this out, but if you'd like to see some of the pieces I'm puzzling over right now, here they are:

There is definitely a Filipino connection in the Abramoff story outside of Susan Ralston. The Tan family of the Marianas was one of Abramoff's biggest clients. They in turn have shipping and clothing interests in the Philippines.

Tom DeLay and Dick Armey both either visited the Marianas themselves or sent staff.

Imelda Marcos has supposedly been called upon to testify before the Abramoff grand jury.

The easternmost organization suspected of being affiliated with al Qaeda is Jemaah Islamiyah, which includes the Southern Philippines in its base of operations. Interestingly, the United States was reluctant to name this group as an international terrorist organization, until they attacked Bali.

Gale Norton presides over the Marianas, via the Office of Insular Affairs. OIA is run by a guy named David B. Cohen, a former banking guy and partner of Sidley, Austin, Brown & Wood. I guess just before that, he was nominated by Del. Falleomavaega to http://www.house.gov/apps/list/press/as00_faleomavaega/cohendavid.html">Special Industry Committee #24, the committee appointed to--stop me if this sounds familiar--set a new minimum wage for American Samoa. In typical Bush Administration fashion, the three other slots requiring Senate approval within OIA are not filled, but are instead run by picked Acting Directors.

Then there's Aragoncillo, the White House spy.

And the hopefully now well-known AP story about the terrorists showing up on Jack's boat.

http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:1UeufYqqE6IJ:www.bonitanews.com/01/09/florida/d678875a.htm+%22SunCruz+Casinos+has+turned+over+photographs+and+other+documents+to+FBI+investigators%22&hl=en&client=opera

Since the Bush Administration refuses to elucidate the public about any of this, I feel totally free to conjecture. But right now I just have questions.

29. Those are interesting questions. Anywhere that Grover goes,
al-Qaeda is sure to follow. So, you may be right about the Jemaah Islamiyah connection. Here's another piece of the puzzle for you: Project Bojinka was hatched by KSM and Ramzi Yusuf in the Philippines. This seems to predate the Abramoff-Norquist operations by only a couple years.

Another interesting tie-in, a postscript really, is Patrick Fitzgerald who prosecuted Ramzi for his role in the '93 WTC bombing and who was investigating some of Grover's friends, when a certain NYT reporter dropped a dime just ahead of an FBI raiding party that was swooping in on alledged al-Qaeda financiers. Small world, isn't it?

Here's a useful Yusuf biography with lots of links that detail the Philippines connection:
http://ramzi-yousef.biography.ms/

Ramzi Ahmed Yousef or Ramzi Mohammed Yousef (also transliterated as Ramzi Yusuf, Ramzi Youssef, and other ways), birth name possibly Abdul Basit Karim. He is believed to be one of the masterminds behind the first World Trade Center attack. United States authorities say he was an Al-Qaeda terrorist and agent. Yousef used Najy Awaita Haddad, Paul Vijay, Adam Sali, Adam Adel Ali, Adam Khan Baluch, Doctor Adel Sabah, Doctor Richard Smith, and 14 other aliases to obscure his identity.

His nationality is disputed. The father of Yousef and the father of Yousef's uncle, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, are believed to be from the Baluchistan province of Pakistan. Yousef was probably raised in Kuwait. The man thought to be the father was a guest worker. Guest workers were treated as second-class citizens in Kuwait.

SNIP

His partner, Ahmed Ajaj , who also had a false passport, was arrested on the spot after his passport was proven false and instructions for making bombs was found in his luggage. INS holding cells were overcrowded, so Yousef was told to come back in one month. He travelled around New York and New Jersey and called Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, a controversial Muslim preacher, via cell phone. Yousef got the manuals back from his partner. He got conspirators and tried obtaining mixing chemicals to make a bomb. After a hospital stay from a car accident, Yousef got back the manuals from his car, which was in a police impound.

SNIP

Yousef then rented a Ryder van. On February 26, 1993, the van was loaded with explosives and driven into the garage of the World Trade Center, where it exploded (in a later interrogation Yousef told investigators that the plan had been to take out structural parts of the foundation and make one tower collapse into the other). He escaped to Pakistan hours later. After meeting up with terrorist friends, including Khalid Sheik Mohammed, he stayed in safe houses funded by Osama bin Laden. While staying in those safe houses, he attempted more terrorist attacks. His attack in Iran worked, but his plot to kill then-president Benazir Bhutto did not work. In a meeting with Mohammed and Abdul Hakim Murad, an old friend, they discussed airplanes and training to fly aircraft.

Grander plans
The trio were sent to Manila, Philippines. Yousef made assassination plots to kill Pope John Paul II and United States President Bill Clinton. The second plan was dismissed. The first became part of Operation Bojinka, but would not get implemented since the plot got exposed. While he was in the Philippines, Yousef courted local women in clubs and went on scuba trips. Yousef met his girlfriend, Carol Santiago, at a 7-11 store on Adriatico Street. Santiago was introduced to Khalid Shaikh Mohammed at the store. She knew him under the name Salem Ali. Mohammed claimed to be a Saudi businessman.

The scuba trips to Puerto Galera he went with Khalid Shaikh Mohammed on may have been fronts for meetings with Abu Sayyaf. Yousef allegedly trained twenty people on one of the meetings. Yousef and Abdul Hakim Murad often went to two karaoke bars, the XO on Adriatico Street, and the Firehouse on Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City. According to Murad, they never went to the mosque.

While in Manila, his first bombing was at a mall in Cebu City, which detonated several hours after Yousef placed it in the generator room. Nobody was hurt. Yousef masterminded the bombing of the Miss Universe pageant at PICC and Roxas Boulevard, both on May 21, 1994. On November 13, 1994, he masterminded the bombing of a Wendy's hamburger stand at Nataghan Corner at J.P. Laurel Sts. On December 1, his friend Wali Khan Amin Shah bombed the Greenbelt Theatre in Manila.

On December 11, Yousef boarded Philippine Airlines Flight 434, which was on a Manila-Cebu-Tokyo route. Yousef assembled a bomb and planted it under his seat on the first leg of the flight. He left the plane at Cebu. The bomb exploded on the second leg, killing one passenger. The plane made an emergency landing in Okinawa, Japan.

Yousef and Mohammed had already started crafting Operation Bojinka. The plot would have had catastrophic consequences if it was carried out. The plot was abandoned after an apartment fire occurred in Manila, Philippines. The fire was started when one of Yousef's friends started a chemical fire in his apartment. Yousef's plan was discovered on a notebook personal computer inside his apartment, two weeks before it would have been implemented. Murad was sent to the apartment to retrieve the computer after the fire department left, but he was arrested and later tortured. He confessed to being part of the Bojinka plan.

Arrested
On February 7, 1995, Yousef was arrested by a group of FBI, U.S. Diplomatic Security Service, and Pakistani police officers at the Su-Casa Guest House in Islamabad, Pakistan before he could rebase himself in Peshawar. He had been betrayed by a man he tried to recruit. Yousef was found with fingers with chemical burns on them.
He was sent to a prison in New York, New York, United States, and held there until his trial. On September 5, 1996, Yousef, Murad, and Shah were convicted for planning Bojinka. They were sentenced to life in prison without parole. In court, Yousef said, "I am a terrorist, and I am proud of it."

If not blackmail, blackmailable improper influence and ties that bind Rove to some sinister characters.

I so needed news that Fitz is still on the trail of the bad guys. Can't wait for the next news conference announcing another indictment. But Please Fitz, take your time, get it right, make it air tight. Don't worry about my withdrawl pangs. I just want it done right.

:hi: Good to hear the news though

30. Oh boy, he's zeroing in on Ledeen
It just keeps getting better and better.

Pop Ledeen and Scooter, then Cheney and Rove go down. The moderate repubs gotta take down Bu$h, or else go down with him.

The torture stuff should finish off Rummy. I doubt Rice or Bolton will survive after all this.

Abramoff will clear the deck with a bunch of the worst republicans and we still have the emerging separation of the corporatists and fundies centering around Delay and Reed with that Indian gambling and money laundering stuff.

Gosh, whodathunk it would have come down like this. This better'n Nixon and Watergate.

34. Raw Story: Rove aide called back to testify
Rove aide called back to testify as inquiry into Rove's role wraps up, lawyers say

Jason Leopold and Larisa Alexandrovna

Ralston and President BushSpecial Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald will soon conclude his investigation into whether President Bush’s deputy chief of staff Karl Rove gave false statements to a grand jury investigating the leak of a covert CIA agent, attorneys close to the case say.

According to lawyers familiar with the case, Fitzgerald is trying to convince the grand jury that Rove made false statements during the three times he testified under oath and misleading statements to Justice Department and FBI investigators when he was first interviewed about his role in the leak in October 2003.

The attorneys told RAW STORY that Fitzgerald has called Rove’s former personal assistant, Susan B. Ralston -- who was also a special assistant to President Bush -- to testify before the grand jury for a third time, perhaps as early as Monday. She is not said to be in legal jeopardy.

Fitzgerald spokesman Randall Samborn would neither confirm nor deny that Ralston would appear before the grand jury. Ralston’s attorney could not be reached for comment.

Ralston previously worked as a personal secretary to Jack Abramoff, the Republican power lobbyist being investigated for allegations of defrauding Indian tribes who was recently indicted on conspiracy and wire fraud charges. While working with Abramoff, Ralston arranged fundraisers and events at Washington MCI Center skyboxes for members of Congress. Ralston communicated with Rove on Abramoff’s behalf on tribal affairs, though she is not accused of wrongdoing.

36. most people have the sense to tell the truth to the grand jury
Rove thinks he's too smart to have to tell the truth, IMHO
Libby thought he was so powerful reporters would protect him and had some big motivation to lie, probably from Dick, IMHO

Or maybe I am naive.

38. I wonder if she's also having to testify in the Abramoff case?
IF she is, that could me motivation for her to cooperate with Fitz. Secretarys are usually very loyal to their bosses UNTIL the heat gets too much on THEM! Self-preservation is a very powerful thing! Also having been a Sec. to Abramoff AND a special asst. to Shrub, whe's in a very good position to know all the inside dirt! Secretarys know EVRYTHING!

44. Well Isn't She A Peach!
Rove & Abramoff. Any chance she worked for Delay and we have a trifecta? And love the bit about lawyers saying FitzG. is trying to convince a grand jury. So the 4th time he testified Rove told the truth? Hmm maybe he impeached himself and FitzG. isn't having to convince anybody of anything.

While working with Abramoff, Ralston arranged fundraisers and events at Washington MCI Center skyboxes for members of Congress. Ralston communicated with Rove on Abramoff’s behalf on tribal affairs, though she is not accused of wrongdoing.

Fitzgerald wants to question Ralston again about several telephone calls Rove allegedly made to a few reporters, including syndicated columnist Robert Novak, lawyers close to the investigation say. Novak first disclosed the identity of undercover CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson in his July 14, 2003 column.

Furthermore, the attorneys said that Fitzgerald wants Ralston to clarify some of her previous testimony regarding statements she made about a phone call Rove had with Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper.

Ralston testified that Cooper’s name was not noted in the call logs from Rove’s office, those familiar with the case say.

Rove Aide Appears Before Fitz

by emmajoe
Wed Nov 9th, 2005 at 11:18:17 AM EDT

I just caught this story from Philippine News Online:

Top Rove aide `critical' in CIA probe, dated today.

Apparently because Susan Ralston is Filipino, the foreign news service likes to keep track of her.

There is no mention of when she is expected to meet with Fitzgerald, but it makes it clear to me that Fitz isn't done with Rove yet. ... More below:

Here is a snip from the article:

67. So he is "concluding his investigation", huh?
No way did I ever think Fitz was wrapping this thing up. He knows Libby was only the tip of the iceberg and the harder he shook the tree, the more would fall out. Amazing how many skeletons are in the RW closet.

I heard some talking head on Hardball last night (don't remember who, was only half paying attention) and he said that he didn't think the Chimp would be making any changes in staff or policy right now, they were going to wait for Fitzgerald's findings!

Rover will no doubt stay around to "help" Bushie as long as he can. Brainless should have kicked him out when Rover was identified as Official A but of course, Rover no doubt advised against it.
