AP: Police say scores dead in Jordan blast
Smoke seen rising from Amman building; no injuries reported yet
BREAKING NEWS

Updated: 2:30 p.m. ET Nov. 9, 2005
AMMAN, Jordan - A police official in Jordan’s capital says scores of people are believed to be dead after an explosion at a hotel in Amman.

Reports conflict over whether the hotel is the Radisson or the Grand Hyatt.

Another police official says people are being evacuated from the building. He says some people are dead and many are wounded.

A police spokesman says the cause of the explosion isn’t known. But an American businessman who was at the hotel says a bomb went off in the lobby.

The explosion shook the Radisson hotel and several wounded people were seen in the lobby, witnesses said.

The explosion ripped through a banqueting room where about 250 people were attending a wedding reception. The hotel is known to be popular with Israeli tourists.

34. "Witnesses said many Western tourists were staying there."

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L09177164.htm
<snip>

The Radisson is known to be popular with Israeli tourists, but there was no confirmation of the nationality of any of the dead or wounded. Witnesses said many Western tourists were staying there.

Israel's Magen David Adom rescue service said it had offered to send medical aid to Jordan, including transport for any wishing to receive treatment in Israel.

Jordan had been spared major attacks on foreigners despite its proximity to Iraq, but the authorities had long been braced for trouble.

Al Qaeda's leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, hails from poor Zarqa just outside Amman. Amman is a major centre for the United Nations in the region.

32. More info--at least two bombs (Days Inn and Raddisson) were suicide
bombers who walked into the lobby. There was a wedding going on at one venue.

A threat was received early this morning by an unknown group, faxed to the Jordanian government. This is a very uncommon occurence, and not typical of Al Qaeda.

The question is whether or not the hotels had full security posture deployed.

In the past five years there have been a dozen or more plots, but all save one was successfully stopped by Jordanian counterintelligence. The Jordanian press lists people arrested on a regular basis.

24. MSNBC is carrying the feed from Al Arabiya
The sites are close to both the US and Israeli embassies. There was a wedding or some sort of party going on at one of the venues. Al Jazeera is saying it is believed to be Al Qaeda. Security at the hotels--five star, high quality--has been high since 2000. Fatalities 25 so far, at least 50 wounded, maybe more.

55. Bombers hit 3 Amman hotels
AMMAN (Reuters) - Three suspected suicide bombers blew themselves up in three hotels in Amman on Wednesday and many people were feared dead, Jordan's official news agency, Petra, reported.

The agency, quoting a police spokesman, said the three targeted hotels were the Radisson SAS, the Grand Hyatt, and the Days Inn. The three hotels are popular with Western and Israeli tourists.

Reuters witnesses earlier reported that blasts at the Radisson and the Hyatt had killed at least five people and wounded scores more.

Reuters correspondent Suleiman al-Khalidi at the Radisson hotel said five people were killed there and more than 12 others wounded. Correspondent Luke Baker at the Hyatt hotel said at least 40 were wounded, some seriously, there.

60. Halliburton has a huge operation in Amman.
Through its subsidiary, Kellogg, Brown and Root. That's where they put people who are tired of playing the lottery-of-death in the Green Zone of Baghdad. Much of Halliburton's day-to-day business of ripping off Iraq is actually conducted from Amman.

KBR also has a penchant for putting its employees up at the poshest hotels they can find--for which they were criticized in 2003 in Kuwait.

Anyone know if KBR was housing a significant number of employees housed in these three hotels?

71. Pursuant to this offensive in W Iraq lately, Al Qaeda promised to hit back
I guess they weren't kidding. CNN Interntional was carrying just prior to the attacks scenes of civilians: women and children crying over rubble and (trapped and dead) relatives in these western Iraq towns hit by this latest "offensive" by US and Iraqi forces.

Jordan Says Amman Blasts Were `Terror Operations' (Update2)
Nov. 9 (Bloomberg) -- The Jordanian government said blasts at three hotels in the capital Amman late today were coordinated ``terror operations,'' probably carried out by suicide bombers.

Jordan's Deputy Prime Minister Marwan Muasher told CNN that 53 people were confirmed dead in the attacks.

``Three terror operations targeted the Radisson SAS hotel, the Hyatt Amman and the Days Inn,'' Major Bashir Daaja, head of media at Jordan's Public Security Department, said in a statement distributed by the official Petra news agency. Muasher said the deadliest attack was at the Radisson, where the bomber set off his explosives in a Jordanian wedding party.

I just edited, adding that, of course, for most of the world, it's actually 9/11.
