Former FEMA chief Brown off payroll

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Former FEMA chief Michael Brown is no longer on the agency's payroll, the Homeland Security Department said Wednesday, ending nearly two months of compensation after he resigned under fire.

Brown stepped down as director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Sept. 12 in the wake of the government's sluggish reaction to Hurricane Katrina and questions about his own disaster response experience. He remained on the FEMA payroll until Nov. 2, Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke said.

Initially, Brown was permitted to continue collecting his $148,000 annual salary for 30 days after he resigned. Last month, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he extended Brown's contract for an additional 30 days, until mid-November, to help the agency complete its review of the response to Katrina.

But Brown ended his contract early, said Knocke, responding to an inquiry about House Democratic demands to remove Brown from the payroll.

Go Dems!

12. I think it was a way to "ease" him out of the picture...
...in an effort to make it seem less embarrassing for Bush.

If Brown disappeared immediately, it would have been even more obvious that Bush is a weak ignoramus (I know, I know...), however, this way, Brown "fades away" in an "in-your-face" gesture on the part of Bush to his critics.

The best restaurants in Baton Rouge? It surely couldn't have been on how to manage a disaster!

30. Absolutely.
I read that just a few days before this happened, the Dem's had sent a letter urging FEMA to fire his butt.

They felt it was outrageous and a waste of money. It's about god-damned time.

Michael Brownie = oxygen thief

21. I wonder which FEMA sub-contractor picked him up?
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 07:57 AM by BiggJawn
I would NOT be surprised to find that he's still financing his Nordstorm wardrobe and 1-hour Baton Rouge dinners at our expense, just with an additional layer of billing or two to insulate him from the Public Scrutiny.

Fucker ought to be proscuted. I know stupidity isn't a crime, but this was just too much.

25. But negligent homicide is.
Or at least, involuntary manslaughter. I'm sure he didn't really MEAN for all the Katrina victims to die and to suffer so. But it still happened because the poster boy for incompetence (well, the OTHER poster boy for incompetence) was in charge. And it happened on his watch. And it happened under his command. So he bears the responsibility. As does his boss (chertoff). As does HIS boss (bush).
