Bush, GOP mired in political quicksand
NBC/WSJ poll shows president at new lows in all job approval categories

WASHINGTON - Democrats might be overstating that their gubernatorial victories Tuesday in New Jersey and Virginia are glaring signs for next year's midterm congressional elections and beyond, but one thing is pretty clear: President Bush and the GOP seem to be mired in political quicksand.

The latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, released Wednesday night, finds that all five of Bush's job approval ratings - on overall job performance, the economy, foreign policy, terrorism and Iraq - are at all-time lows in the survey. In addition, the CIA leak scandal seems to be taking a toll on the administration, with nearly 80 percent believing the indictment of Vice President Cheney's former chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, is a serious matter, and with Bush experiencing a 17-point drop since January in those who see him as honest and straightforward.

With the midterms a year away, these numbers could spell trouble for the GOP. "These are not good times for Republicans," says Republican pollster Bill McInturff, who conducted the survey with Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart. "This is a very unhappy electorate that's going to be unstable, and they are terrifically unstable numbers for a Republican majority."

-snip-
According to the poll, Bush's approval rating stands at an all-time low of 38 percent, a one-point decline since October; in fact, this is the third consecutive NBC/Journal survey showing Bush at an all-time low on his job approval. And it doesn't stop there: Approval for his handling of the economy (34 percent), foreign policy (35 percent), terrorism (39 percent), and Iraq (32 percent) have all hit rock bottom.

68. I put it in every thread on Bush's poll numbers.
Usually I add, "I thought 9/11 changed everything, so that shitty presidents got good numbers now."

Nobody's ever responded before.

87. Well, I'm certainly overdue. It IS a great line!
Besides, if 9/11 changed everything, KATRINA CHANGED IT ALL BACK. To such a degree that the shitty president from the shitty party can't avoid the shitty numbers anymore - in reality, in the national zeitgeist, AND the media. They aren't exactly ignoring the polls anymore, either.

I think it may be called just desserts, buyers' remorse, karma, and come-uppance.

Ergo, we are left with "theories!"

"Indeed, Iraq - which has emerged as the public's top priority in the poll - has become a particularly thorny issue for Bush. Fifty-seven percent believe he deliberately misled people to make the case for war, compared with 35 percent who say he gave the most accurate information he had. In addition, 58 percent are less confident the war will come to a successful conclusion, and 57 percent say the United States should reduce the number of U.S. troops there. "

Yes, I understand, the media during Bush's term wasn't exactly "liberal." In fact, it was also laden with propaganda. But not the degree we see "respectable" news anchors peddling now. And then there's FOX.

That is a huge win for a democrat in this state.

Granted, Kilgore is a moron. Having Russ Potts, the "Independent" candidate tell everyone what a moron Kilgore is had to help Kaine, but this doesn't detract from Kaine's win in the least.

This race was polling as too close to call in the last week. At the last minute, a bunch of mainstream republicans decided they couldn't vote for right to life, pro death penalty (never mind the contradiction) and anti-gay marriage Kilgore because he was too much of a right wing loon.

I hope against hope this is a trend.

That's it, right there. The people are actually ready for impeachment. I know it's not really proper to use data from two different polls, but if you put this 57% together w/ Zogby's 50+% that would impeach him if he misled, well, you get the picture.

30. "Democrats do not fare much better" issue must be addressed.
"While the poll shows that a plurality of 43 percent views the Republican Party negatively, the Democratic Party doesn'tt fare much better just 33 percent view them positively, vs. 36 percent who see them in a negative light."

So here it is, *only* 36% see the democrats negatively, while 43% see the Republicans negatively. Such numbers do not a revolution make.

what we would like to see, of course, is a Democratic Party that ran on issues like ending the war (not, "we will withdrawal when we stabilize Iraq, we are better managers of imperial war"), a platform that ensures health care for all, not fair profits for health care megacorporations; Fair trade, not clinton-bush "free trade"; minimum wage increases that will make a real difference in people's lives... and so on.

If people see something worth fighting for, it will make all the difference.

38. Sorry to say, but
we all are. This country is left with a host of problems of unlimited magnitude, among which, to name a few, a bona fide constitutional crisis that became obvious, albeit unanimously denied, in 2000, a decayed infra-structure, a drastic loss, rather than a gain, in "values", a complete destruction of the public information system and a financial situation close to bankrupcy. No one will be held accountable, as usual, and our "white knights" have proven to be, to a very few exceptions, unreliable and spineless. The Idiot has reigned, his associates have plundered, people have died and the problems above get worse by the minute. No reason to rejoice.

44. True, that is why my money is overseas in various Forex markets, just like
Jim Rodger's and Warren Buffet's assets. This administration advocates job outsourcing and has an active policy of the devaluing the US dollar. The Chicago Federal Bank chief just went on record as saying that "we" own the printing presses and "we" will print as much money as needed. In the world history of bad ideas, this has NEVER worked in the long term, NEVER worked in the mid term, and RARELY worked in the short term. The US has gone from the world's largest creditor nation in the late 80's to the world's largest debtor nation now. In addition, we are the largest debtor nation in the history of the world. Our debt is increasing by 1.6 Trillion dollars every 18 months. That's trillion with a T. What will happen to the US dollar over the next 10 years as baby boomers move to retire en masse will be both dramatic and terrifying.

New poll finds Bush's approval hit new low
- -

Washington: US President George W. Bush's approval ratings have hit a new low, signaling political trouble ahead for the American leader, according to a new opinion poll. The joint survey by NBC News and The Wall Street Journal found that public opinion of Bush performance in five areas -- overall job performance, the economy, foreign policy, terrorism and Iraq -- have hit new lows.

The president's overall job approval rating stood at 38 percent, a one-point decline since October, showed the poll made public yesterday. Meanwhile, only 34 percent of those surveyed approved of his handling of the economy, 35 percent of foreign policy, 39 percent of his policy on terrorism and 32 percent of Iraq.

The survey showed 57 percent of Americans believed Bush deliberately misled people to make the case for war, compared with 35 percent who said he gave the most accurate information he had. In addition, 58 percent were less confident the war will come to a successful conclusion, while 57 percent said the United States should reduce the number of US troops in Iraq.

cutting binge, 2 repukes were let go this week. One had a picture of Chimpy standing with the firemen after 9-11. He was posing so badly that I called it Blue Steele.

I hate to see anybody lose their jobs but it did seem rather like poetic justice that 2 such rabid rightwingers would go. Both, btw, were 6 figure jobs. Ouch!!!

55. Bush was put into power to redistribute the wealth
He should get a 100% rating. He has pretty well decimated the American middle class and the poor, and the rich has never had it better.

He is a corporate globalist. His audience is the global rich. He could care less about any U.S. citizen.

69. Poll: Republican advantage is eroding
NEW YORK, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Support for U.S. Republicans is eroding, and a 48 percent plurality want the Democrats to take control of Congress, a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll shows.

The telephone survey of 1,003 adults, conducted from Nov. 4 to Nov. 7, found 48 percent of those asked favored a Democratic-dominated House after next year's election, compared with 37 percent backing Republicans. The 11-point gap is the widest enjoyed by either party on that question since the poll began asking it in 1994.

However, the Republicans had some edges in the poll, with 21 percentage points over Democrats on maintaining a strong defense, by 17 percentage points on promoting strong moral values and by 9 percentage points on handling the war on terrorism.

Republicans hold a 231-203 edge over Democrats in the House, with one seat vacant. In the Senate, their advantage is 55-45. Of 33 Senate seats up for grabs next year, 15 are held by Republicans.

That is the most adroit assessment of the opposition to date. Republicans = dumb, whiny, bratty, immature pigs. Like tiny boys throwing sand at each other in a school yard. The kind of sand that kills bystanders and fucks up the sandbox for the next fifty years and makes other parents not want to send their kids to our school. It's time for some adults to start putting these shits in time-out. Permanently.

74. So it's time to redefine "Moral Values"
Moral values are not sending someone off to die for selfish reasons.

Moral values are caring for those who have nothing, not those who have plenty.

Moral values are placing more importance on all citizens having healthcare coverage, instead of on insurance companies' profits.

Moral values are making sure we leave the environment intact for future generations, not treating it as a limitless all-you-can-eat buffet.

Moral values are MAKING corporations curb their pollution and end self-serving business practices (i.e. outsourcing) - because they won't do it themselves.

Moral values are caring for a child AFTER it's born, not just while it's "pre-born".

Moral values are actually placing more resources for education, not just fudging numbers so it merely looks like more students are graduating.

Moral values are allowing ALL citizens the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness - not just people who look like you and go to the same church as you.
