LAT: Results Unsettle (Arnie's) Supporters (Maria interviewing new staff)
Results Unsettle Gov.'s Supporters
As rumors of turmoil fly, sources say they expect some top advisors to leave. Democrats and labor are weighing how to proceed.
By Peter Nicholas and Jordan Rau, Times Staff Writers

SACRAMENTO — On a day of fierce recriminations, Republican allies and friends of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared shaken Wednesday by the collapse of his agenda in this week's special election, saying he needs to recapture the confidence of voters by jettisoning some of his political advisors.

Among those distressed by the direction of the governor's administration is First Lady Maria Shriver, who is interviewing potential candidates for senior staff jobs in the governor's office, according to people familiar with the matter.

As rumors swirled, names surfaced of people who might be asked to join Schwarzenegger in high-level jobs. They included Democrats; one was Susan Kennedy, a California Public Utilities Commission member who had been a top aide to former Gov. Gray Davis. She declined to comment.

The suggestions of turmoil ahead came as Schwarzenegger's opponents, savoring their victory, appeared ambivalent about the best way to approach the weakened governor.

Schwarzenegger stumbled badly in his attempt to make 2005 his "year of reform" when all four measures he championed were defeated Tuesday....

1. Maria Shriver interviewing potential staff? Can you imagine the outcry
if Hillary had done that for Bill Clinton? Arnie's regime has descended into silliness and irrelevancy.

16. Not my memory. I don't believe Hillary was in staffing Clinton's WH
office or administration. If you are saying otherwise I would like to see a citation.

6. Thank you! Why should Democrats come riding to the POS's side
He befouled his own nest, now let him roll around in it. Democrats should refuse any position on the One-term-inator's staff.

10. I LIKE that one! "The ONE-Term-inator"!
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 11:19 AM by calimary
REALLY good!

And by the way, what's this bullshit about how his opponents are at some sort of loss as to how to respond to all this? WTF??? They're NOT SURE HOW TO PROCEED AT THIS POINT?

Well, then, how 'bout just sitting back and letting themselves get all complacent again? How 'bout just rolling over and thinking it's all a done deal and going back to sleep? How 'bout making nice-nice with the poor guy so he has a chance to regroup and then make a comeback - AGAINST US, FULL-THROTTLE AND REINVIGORATED? How 'bout that, you IDIOTS?!?!?!?! Now is NOT the time to rest on your laurels. You really don't have any. Not til this guy is OUT OF OFFICE and we've REPLACED him with ONE OF OUR OWN. THEN you can take a breather. For about ten minutes or so. These guys WON'T back down or capitulate or see the light or try to find ways to cooperate and work together in all sweetness and light. Any more than that nice, sweet, soft-spoken scorpion to whom you just offered a piggyback ride across the river would be happy to do.

12. Ummm, Because Democrats Actually Care About the People of California
Look, I too would like to just take a few minutes to gloat over the Terminator being Terminated on Tuesday. But when the dust settles, I think it is important to do what is right to help the people of California. I also think it would go a great deal to show people that Democrats , ABOVE ALL ELSE, care deeply about GOOD GOVERNANCE (sp).

Someone is going to have to step in and fix the mess these neo-con, corporate evangelist, hate-mongering dickheads in the Republican Party have made of America. It's up to Democrats to show that we can work for the good of all.

I would make the bastard grovel at the Democrats feet, publicly and loudly begging them to come to the rescue of his broken Governorship, and then I would go and help him fix it.

Remember, the majority of Americans are not ideologues. They want government that works, and can solve problems.

It's tempting to say; "Repukes, you made your bed, now lie in it". That might be personally satisfying, but it does nothing to restore competence to government.

Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 12:05 PM by Mountainman
come right back to try their agenda again and they will have 4 years to do it.

I say cut the boobengrabber off at the knees. We can take the
Governorship back next year.

You make a BIG mistake trying to play nice with repukes. They will take you kindness and screw you with it.

18. I See Your Point Mountainman
but don't you just wish, even for a minute, there were some "statesman" out there that would put the good of the average American above their personal, party, or political goals.

Maybe get the "Gropenhater" to publicly admit he's in over his head. Maybe get the "Gropenhater" to publicly admit that he was used as a tool for the Republicans and their corporate money masters. Maybe get the "Gropenhater" to admit that his ideas were wrong-headed, and that he needs the help of the Democratic Party. Maybe get the "Gropenhater" to tell the truth about what was behind the power grab for California, and then, and ONLY then, ride in on the White Horse...not to save the "Gropenhater", but to save the people of California.

Just a thought.

27. you are thinking they have humanity... a mistake.
they obviously showed that they have none, that's why they wrote those propositions as they did. they already showed you what they are, time and time again: selfish machines of destruction.

what do you do with a virulent bacterial infection? you kill it. no quarter.

but bless your heart in thinking that you are dealing with humane people, not monsters, here. i only ask you review their actions and review your assessment that they have any humanity left to appeal to.

19. The minute Arnie announces he's NOT running in 2006, we should help
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 12:41 PM by Rowdyboy
but not a moment before. If he wins another term, and Diane Feinstein dies in office, he'll replace her with a right-wing Republican and we've lost another senate seat.

Californians HAD an elected governor but they wanted a celebrity. Well they got what they asked for. Maybe they'll be a little more cautious before they recall another governor.

You never learn from a mistake until you pay a price. Perhaps this is the price California must pay for throwing out an administrator and electing an incompetent, big-mouthed nimrod in the first place. I know my state is paying for electing Haley Barbour big time.

Mistakes have consequences, as ALL Americans are now learning.

Phil Angelides or Steve Westly need to be elected in 2006.

"I will take it to the peeeepole" well the "Peeeepole" told him many times we didn't like the props he backed but he went ahead and called a special election anyhow and it ended up being a total and complete waste of money, money we don't have.

25. An exceedingly vain man, Arnold hitched his star to the wrong train...
...and got dragged through the briar patches of Sacramento.

But let's be careful here. The vile corruption that is the Bush Administration will attempt to put Arnold back together again, or find a replacement.

22. In Fresno
the Alliance, the people who brought a 60/40 county to no greater a split than 57/43 on 74-77 & even defeated some of arnies proposals, is planning to have their regular 7:30am Monday to see where do they go from here? I agree that if we cut him any slack that it will come back to haunt us & as long as the repugs are tanking there is no reason to not stand firm and push our agenda. I think everybody should take a deep breath and get ready for some heavy lifting because arnie has said that this was only the beginning of the hard work. It has been shown a few times that as CA goes so does the rest of the country. Bush has stated that the repugs want CA so you know that they will be back in June with more of the agenda. I think the real anti-arnold campaign is Phil Angelides in 2006.
