Greenpeace activist beaten in Philippines anti-coal protest

MASINLOC, Philippines (AFP) - A German Greenpeace volunteer was badly beaten by armed guards at a coal-fired power plant in the Philippines after the environmental campaigners forced their way into the compound to mount a protest on climate change.

Following the confrontation five activists were on Thursday taken to hospital for treatment and 12 volunteers from New Zealand, Australia, China and the Philippines were arrested and charged for trespassing but later released without any bail being posted.

German Jens Loewe, 36, was badly beaten and hit on the face and head with a crowbar while he was lying on the ground, along with Filipino activist Tomas Leonar, 24, Greenpeace said.

An AFP photographer at the scene said Loewe was repeatedly hit with the crowbar and was later carried away on a stretcher and rushed to a local hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

1. The elders cautioned that many would hate the rainbow warriors
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 12:23 PM by SpiralHawk
when they stood to defend the earth that all people depend upon for clean water, air, and food.

They said it would require the full intelligence, determination, and pure heartedness of the people to overcome the Great Shadows using only peaceful means.

The elders dreamed also that the rainbow warriors would triumph -- and that eventually all people would come to recognize the basic need for honesty, caring, sharing, respect, and forgiveness. All would understand that we must take care of the earth to insure clean water, air, and food so that our children and our children's children, might live.

2. Related to other events?
Isn't that where Greenpeace was just fined for destroying a big chunk of coral reef, and the fault was lain at the feet of old maps? Maybe the attack is related to the media around that event.

6. Government conspiracies?
Who knows what kind of government conspiracies go on? Greenpeace threw the blame back at the government provided maps. Why wouldn't the government or some corrupt cronies want to get back at them? It's not like it wouldn't be easy to pay off a few thugs.

3. Arrested for trespassing? Fine. Beaten with a crowbar? Cowardice.
I'm sure the banner they were carrying was pretty scary, though.

7. This is why environmental/animal rights are important.
Anyone who could willingly torture animals or pollute the world they live in obviously have no regard for anything, human or otherwise. They're dangerous, but protected by the law. Change the law, and they'll be seen as the criminals they really are...and maybe our country will be safer.

In my experience, those who so harshly try to destroy the environment, make animals suffer, or advocate the two, have some serious mental issues, or are capable/have commited some sickening crimes themselves.

it's all in the mentality. Some people laugh at greenpeace being beaten up, but how long until these anti environmental, anti animal people become brave enough to prey on other people? Doesn't seem so funny anymore does it?
