Televangelist Robertson warns town of God's wrath

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Conservative Christian televangelist Pat Robertson told citizens of a Pennsylvania town that they had rejected God by voting their school board out of office for supporting "intelligent design" and warned them on Thursday not to be surprised if disaster struck.

Robertson, a former Republican presidential candidate and founder of the influential conservative Christian Broadcasting Network and Christian Coalition, has a long record of similar apocalyptic warnings and provocative statements.

...

"I'd like to say to the good citizens of Dover: if there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God, you just rejected Him from your city," Robertson said on his daily television show broadcast from Virginia, "The 700 Club."

"And don't wonder why He hasn't helped you when problems begin, if they begin. I'm not saying they will, but if they do, just remember, you just voted God out of your city. And if that's the case, don't ask for His help because he might not be there," he said.

It sounds so hysterical to modern (let alone post-modern) ears.

But with some half of the nation living in medieval stupidity, I suppose his terror threat carries some mystical weight, eh?

61. My stepmother is one of Robertson's reguar viewers.
That's where she gets her talking points.

Funny thing, before she found Pat Robertson, she was a lovely woman. She brought happiness to my father after my parents got divorced when I was 10 years old. She used to smile a lot, including with her eyes, plus she liked to drink the odd beer or three and go out dancing sometimes. After she discovered the 700 Club, that all changed very quickly. All the real joy went out of her.

The more she has professed to love God/Jesus over the years, the less happy she has seemed, even while her "smile" has grown hysterical looking, wider and wider, to the point that she looks like Laura Bush. It's like the porch light is on, but nobody's home.

And, oh boy, does she love the Shrub.

143. I'm not sure what it was exactly, but I have a theory.
Both my parents, as well as my stepmother, came from the same rural county in northeast Georgia. After my parents married they moved to Atlanta, where I was born and raised. Our family background was a bizarre mixture of Catholicism and Baptist fundamentalism, but when I was a child we never went to church.

My mother never went to church her entire adult life, although she called herself a Christian. My father, on the other hand, didn't talk about it but he always had, and still has, a quiet, strong Christian faith.

My stepmother, as I've said, used to be tolerant and fun-loving, but that changed quite a few years back. My theory about what caused her to change is simple, really. She and my dad decided to move back to the same community where they grew up and where our family has been for generations (my dad and stepmother live on land that's been in our family since the late 1700s). Our families are full of hateful, bigoted, batshit crazy fundies, and their friends are exactly the same - I believe that's what finally got to my stepmother. She was surrounded 24/7 by people telling her she was going to hell for every little thing (including being pregnant "out of wedlock" as a teenager), and she got scared and swallowed everything she was told. This woman whose company I used to enjoy so much is now harsh, judgemental and humourless, and appears to take pride in being so. She spends her life terrified of going to hell, but the way I look at it, she's already there.

...they may have had their problems, and maybe they were a little mixed-up, but it was never anything that couldn't be fixed.

Anyway, they'd go and disappear for a weekend of "retreat-n-bible-study", and I'd see them a couple of weeks later, and they'd be completely nuts.

Not evil-fundy nuts, but definitely glassy-eyed.

And WAY too effing smug.

144. You're luck that you came through it.
I don't think I'll ever really enjoy being around my stepmother again, which is a shame because I used to get along so well with her. She thinks I'm hellbound because I'm not only a Democrat, but I'm also a Dem who liked Bill Clinton (and didn't care what he did in his private life) and I'm a Catholic, which she doesn't consider Christian at all. Worst of all, I'm pro-choice.

What makes me angriest is that I've sort of lost my dad too. My stepmother dominates him completely, and while I know he doesn't share her extreme religious and political views, he has allowed himself to be swept along with her into living a narrow, mean-spirited life.

158. Fight back
Feel free to ignore this, it may not apply to you:

I've always found it best to assume everyone is doing exactly what they believe in doing. This treats those who do so with respect for their right to choose, and encourages those who don't to start.

Corner your father, tell him how you feel and ask him if this is what he wants.

Corner your step-mother, tell her how you feel (including your memories of earlier good times) and ask her is this is what she wants.

It may change nothing, releasing you from further angst over what to do.

It may change everything.

You won't know till you try, and to not try means losing them both.

Sorry if I've stepped on your toes.

160. No problem, you didn't step on my toes.
I get along very well with my dad, although I don't see him often because he's in Georgia and I'm in England, where I've lived most of my adult life. Would he change if I did what you suggest? I doubt it - my father is a sweetheart, but he's not one who likes having the boat rocked. He's also in his 70s with a pretty severe heart condition, so I'm just happy he's still around.

I did actually talk to my stepmother once about how she changed once she "found Jesus", and she got very upset, telling me that people shouldn't strive for happiness in this world because they'll get it in the next (in other words, be miserable now and it will be worth it later - what kind of god wants that for his creation?).

Basically I've written her off, and when I visit she mostly ignores me and lets me get on with doing things with my dad. Suits me.

They've got all kinds of sin down in New Orleans, so of course God's wrath wiped them out. Then there's the casinos all along the Miss. coast, horse racin' in Kentucky, and all kinds of wild partying and bikini-clad spring-breakers in Florida. Not sure about Indiana, but I'm sure they probably let one too many homosexuals take up residence, or they performed one too many abortions this past year.

48. exactly what I was thinking

'Oh no, Pat spewing this shit means Virginia Beach is going to get hit with a hurricane!'
Those three Gulf hits this year have kinda dampened the Christian Right a little.

Ironically, the Southeastern Indians were highly religious due to storms. The religious artifacts typical of the Southern Cult, as a big chunk the remains are called, all have whirlwind motifs and come from a 10 year span in the 1400s. Musta been a bunch of brutal hurricanes and tornados over a very short period of time. In our times the storms seem to be dousing a lot of fervor rather than raising it....

Fundamentalist Radical Clerics such as Falwell, Dobson, and Robertson are not merely medieval throwbacks or misguided religious hacks. They are part of a well organized subversionary movement known as "Dominionism".

Dominionism constitutes a serious threat to American Democracy. These Radical Clerics have developed and are executing a detailed plan to gradually replace the free, secular democratic society of the United States with a Theocracy.

It is critical that people become aware of the extreme agenda these people have for the United States and ultimately for the world. The results of the 2004 Presidential Election were not a fluke or something that was drummed up over a period of months. It has been in planning for over 20 years, and what we are seeing take place now is, in the words of Katherine Yurica, "the swift advance of a planned coup".

The articles below are critical for understanding the Dominionist movement; for realizing how real and how detailed their plans are; and to become aware of how far they have come toward achieving their goals.

106. I won't dance
on his grave.
(It's impossible to dance when you're taking a leak, let alone having a crap.)

The problem with Pat isn't that he presumes to speak of what God might do to people who displease God; it's that he presumes to speak of what God might do to people who displease Pat. People who soundly reject ID are, in short, people who aren't likely to be susceptible to Pat's slick snake-oil pitches. So, where he can't persuade, he attempts to bully and frighten people. He's like the kid in the schoolyard whose best friend is the town bully. Problem is, no one's seen much of the bully lately. Dover, Pa. has reached the correct conclusion: the kid is on his own and can be ignored.

Question: if we get Pat to testify before Congress on ID and he brings this up, can we nail him for lying to Congress?

Seriously, folks - I'm a Christian myself and I want no part of anything this man is involved in. You know people by their actions, and by his actions, Pat Robertson is a liar, a cheat, a thief, an oppressor of the poor, an enemy of liberty, a perverter of justice, a corrupter of the virtuous, a false prophet, and in the end, a very small, deluded shell of a man. He started life with everything and has managed to turn himself into an empty husk whose only voice is the howl of the wind rattling through him. Pitiful? Certainly. Sad? In the end, yes. But he should know better. He DOES know better. And I believe that he is responsible not only for the suffering and death he has caused on this earth, but also for the eternal suffering and misery awaiting the hapless ones who follow his corrupt example.

Enough. Just seeing or hearing that man's name is enough to make my blood boil.

PsA

Pat Robertson is right. God has been punishing America for at least a couple of years now. First, he sent five or six hurricanes across Florida. Then, he sent other hurricanes to destroy portions of Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama. Most recently, he sent a tornado to strafe Kentucky and Indiana. Obviously, God is pissed off at all the states that voted for Bush in 2004.

And...and I would like to know why....why we can't organize and petition those local television stations which are stupid enough to broadcast his horses*it. . .I'm serious. Why are we not questioning the broadcast renewals of stations that carry this nonsense? Why aren't we demanding at least local stations broadcast a disclaimer to his paid programming? Is there any law which requires stations to accept this kind of programming?

What really tees me off is that this crap is always spouted by wingnut crazies like Pat, and no one stands up and calls him the charleton he is. . .

75. Gold Blackberry and Prismatic Glasses
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 08:18 PM by Coastie for Truth
As I was out walking I passed a bush that was burning fiercely - but it was not consumed by flames. Amazing?

Then a great beast grabbed me and dragged me over to the edge of our condo association tennis court. And, there in the grass I beheld a gold Blackberry. And, verily, it was ringing (actually playing "The Saints Come Marching In") but I couldn't answer it.

Then the great beast pawed the ground - and I beheld special prismatic glasses. I picked them up and put them on.

And behold, a ball of flame shout out from the burning bush and enveloped the Gold Blackberry.

And a sweet female voice came out of the Gold Blackberry - as an apparition appeared on the screen.

The apparition was a Mediterranean or Middle Eastern or South Asian women - with a knowing maternal smile. And she spake unto me-

"Behold, I am Joshie's Mommie, Mitzi, and Pat Robertson is full of crap, and George Bush is no friend of Joshie."

Then she hung up.

Silly Pat, you need a black materia for that. IIRC that was also the year that Florida saw one of its quietest hurricane seasons on record, and Virginia Beach got bitchslapped with Floyd.

I'm starting to think he failed Remedial Curses at Durmstrang's. He probably gave up chanting Avada Kedavra over Chavez's picture.

Last summer, he hit the headlines by calling for the assassination of leftist Venezuelan Present Hugo Chavez, one of
President George W. Bush's most vocal international critics.

"I'd like to say to the good citizens of Dover: if there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God, you just rejected Him from your city," Robertson said on his daily television show broadcast from Virginia, "The 700 Club."

More people now see Robertson and the Christian Right as a laughing stock (recall Bush** was pushing creationism in schools a few months ago). I think people are waking up and seeing Bush** as worse than a laughing stock. His reputation as being stupid is well accepted by Americans, despite the Faux "News" selling him as a "leader". His dependency on Robertson's is part of the ongoing cartoon. Too bad that so many died because of this cartoon character.

99. Sam Kinison had Pat pegged.
If God exists and He communicates to Pat, He does so for His own amusment.

The only good that has ever come from Pat Robertson was his abortive presidential bid, if only because it inspired one of the late, great Sam Kinison's funniest bits whereby God telling Pat to run for president was just another aspect of the mean-spirited deity yanking his chain: "Pat, got outside and check your tire pressure...Look! He's doing it!" source: Pat's Prostate

132. Hey, thanks for that.
There's some good background on this jerk-off there along with Sam's stellar comments. Wasn't Sam himself an evangelist in his younger years? I see to recall reading that somewhere. I guess he saw the light.

142. Yes, Kinison was a traveling evangelist minister
I think his father was one too. If I remember correctly he was a child evangelist, and although not quite on par with Marjoe Gortner, Sam was considered to be a progeny. From what I gather he always retained a belief in, for lack of a better term, a spiritual higher power. His comedic delivery echoed his early evangelical training.

There is a lot about Sam's life that I find interesting. I saw a show on the Travel Channel about haunted places. They talked about a night club in California that Sam used to perform at fairly regularly. There was talk that Sam used to go out before the crowds arrived and challenge the ghosts to show themselves. They said, that lights used to flicker and there were noises. Afterward Sam would laugh about it.

According to those present when he died he had a conversation with someone that no one else could see. He is alleged to have said that he wasn't ready to die yet and then he appeared to listen and then he appeared to acquiesce to his fate by saying "alright" then he died.

I loved Sam and his comedy.

108. My Fatwa
I hereby issue my Old Testament Fatwa...

Ye evil Texans have been inhospitable to your fellow man. You were once strangers in Egypt, strangers in the wilderness, and you treat your fellow man as a stranger and pariah in your mist.

Since the time of Sodomn ye have known that every inhospitable act is an act against me. Every evil your do to your fellow man, every injustice, is one against me.

Therefore, you have but a few months to think on this, and repute and turn from your evil ways, or I will pound you with rains, send cyclones into your fields and into your herds. You and your precarious things will be ripped from the ground and strewn to the four corners of earth by cyclonic winds and gusts.

For you choose to deny justice to your fellow man -- justice of which it is my place to meet. You scorn him, cast him aside, and treat him as a lessor. You deny him the compassion and warmth of his fellow man, as you and your mate have enjoyed.

Dollars to donuts says Texas (and Kansas for that matter) get pummeled with Tornado's in the next year...

that Patty boy has been a regular poster boy for the GNC nutrition chain? I can't remember if he was promoting a specific remedy, but I remember walking in the Minneapolis skyway by the GNC store and seeing a large cardboard cutout of the jackass holding a bottle of pills and spouting some sort of testimonial for them. I've never been in a GNC store but now it is certain that I never will.

maybe people will finally realize the type of people that are bush's base and back away from this fundamentalist buffoonery. Let the people see who bush listens to, who his supporters are and maybe we'll see a return to a more sane type of leadership.
I guess there are a majority of Christians that support Republicans, but if they're associated with THIS type of lunacy they may retreat somewhat from supporting them further. Real Christians and fundamentalist or evangelical whack jobs like Robertson are worlds apart and I don't think real Christians want to be associated with the latter two examples. Maybe they'll realize that Democrats are more closely aligned with Jesus' teachings than Republicans, who happen to appeal to the old testament angry, vengeful god crowd.

They both believe that natural disasters are God's will

This man believes that God can be defeated by an election
and that people can influence God's will!

This is what the Church told people dying of plague centuries ago.

"The New Orleans disaster was meant to happen. It was an act of God.
"I think people responded to it the best way they can.

In fact, I am sure that we are the vast majority. Our composed, lucid and balanced nature has allow us to disregard the idiotic ranting of these hate mongers as aberrations that are offered 1st amendment rights to free speech like everyone in this country, but no more. These kooks, yes kooks, have infiltrated and infested our government and the bully pulpit of the corporate media via the present administration and their minions. They have become a threat to each and every citizen and everything our country has stood for for the last 229 years.

Enough, I say. ENOUGH.

How dare Pat Robinson insult and malign loyal, free and patriotic voting citizens of Pennsylvania. How dare this arrogant charlatan take their God's name in vain.

That's it.

It is time we all put our foot down and scream louder than these hate mongers that anyone who would follow, respect and worst yet, financially support these fanatics are unpatriotic and no friend to the United States of America and our Constitution.

179. AAS Statement on the Teaching of Evolution
AAS Statement on the Teaching of Evolution
Adopted 20 September 2005

The American Astronomical Society supports teaching evolution in our nation’s K-12 science classes. Evolution is a valid scientific theory for the origin of species that has been repeatedly tested and verified through observation, formulation of testable statements to explain those observations, and controlled experiments or additional observations to find out whether these ideas are right or wrong. A scientific theory is not speculation or a guess -- scientific theories are unifying concepts that explain the physical universe.

<snip>

In recent years, advocates of “Intelligent Design,” have proposed teaching “Intelligent Design” as a valid alternative theory for the history of life. Although scientists have vigorous discussions on interpretations for some aspects of evolution, there is widespread agreement on the power of natural selection to shape the emergence of new species. Even if there were no such agreement, “Intelligent Design” fails to meet the basic definition of a scientific idea: its proponents do not present testable hypotheses and do not provide evidence for their views that can be verified or duplicated by subsequent researchers.

Since “Intelligent Design” is not science, it does not belong in the science curriculum of the nation’s primary and secondary schools.

181. Read "Greetings From Idiot America"
This is all so surreal.

If you get a chance, read the entire article by Pierce in Esquire. It is long but worth the read.

Greetings from Idiot America

by Charles Pierce

The Congress of the United States intervenes to extend into a televised spectacle the prolonged death of a woman in Florida. The majority leader of the Senate, a physician, pronounces a diagnosis based on heavily edited videotape. The majority leader of the House of Representatives argues against cutting-edge research into the use of human stem cells by saying that "an embryo is a person. . . . We were all at one time embryos ourselves. So was Abraham. So was Muhammad. So was Jesus of Nazareth." Nobody laughs at him or points out that the same could be said of Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, or whoever invented the baby-back rib.

snip

And in Dover, Pennsylvania, during one of these many controversies, a pastor named Ray Mummert delivers the line that both ends our tour and, in every real sense, sums it up:

"We've been attacked," he says, "by the intelligent, educated segment of the culture."

And there it is.

Welcome to Idiot America.
