LAT: Schwarzenegger Drops Fight With Nurses Over Staffing Ratios
Schwarzenegger Drops Fight With Nurses Over Staffing Ratios
By Jordan Rau, Times Staff Writer

SACRAMENTO -- Jettisoning another apparently losing cause, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has abandoned a yearlong legal fight over hospital staffing rules, one that sparked the public employee rebellion that led to the defeat of his special election agenda.

The administration's effort last November to scale back some of the strict nurse-to-patient ratios that lawmakers imposed on California hospitals was rejected repeatedly by a Sacramento County Superior Court judge.

Late Thursday — the same day Schwarzenegger pledged publicly to be less combative with those who had opposed him — the governor's office directed its lawyers to drop its appeal.

Leaders of the California Nurses Assn., which had challenged Schwarzenegger in court, said today that they viewed the action as both an "olive branch" and a "strategic retreat." The nurses declared victory Friday after hounding Schwarzenegger throughout California, holding 107 protests against his policies.

"The governor did extend the olive branch and we don't want to be ungracious," said Rose Ann DeMoro, the union's executive director. "But as he extends this branch, we will never take our eye off the tree. What we are focused on is that this governor takes his direction from corporations."...

They all helped keep that actor on the run and unable to sugarcoat the crap he was trying to pull in this special election.

Felt damn good voting for the winning side. Can we make this a habit, please?

Because men don't have big enough b*lls.

12. this is an utterly remarkable moment in US history. remember these last
few days, after all of the pain that we've felt for so many years at losing endless battles against complete corporate control of our nation. this may be a turning point, or it may portend a much larger battle to come.

35. Way to go CNA,
It is good to see those 'evil special interest groups' came out ahead on this one. Please please folks, support your RNs. If you or your loved one are hospitalized and you feel that you are not getting adequate nursing time...take it to the administration BUT say that you think they do not have an adequate number of RNs on the floor. Or better yet, before you choose a hospital ask about their RN to patient ratio, or how they staff. That will get their attention. The higher the ratio, the greater risk to your safety.
Registered nurses just want to do a good, safe job and help patients recover. The corporations just want to squeeze a profit. So who do you think is looking out for you?????

37. Great point. Study after study has reinforced the ratio's effect on good
outcomes for inpatients.

The higher the number of nurses(specifically RN's) to patients, the significantly less number of bad outcomes for patients.

Time and time again, study after study, the results speak for themselves.

Support the hospitals that recognize and act on this information. MKJ

21. we finally unionized

the paraeducators in our SoCal school district. it has taken years. finally, after being the subject of many cuts, we finally convinced enough of them to vote to join the union. we work only parttime to begin with and lost even more hours and all benefits in a mass layoff two years ago.

Remember that when you visit the hospital next time, Gropenator. And librarians have lots of friends, as the publishers of Michael Moore's Stupid White Men learned.

oh, and never piss off the secretaries, they know where everything thing is filed...

28. My facility learned that this week...
They were going for Magnet Status and didn't get it..one of the reasons: huge nurse turnover ratio.

Administration spent the weeks pre-Magnet inspection week giving out booklets to the nurses with "if you are asked this, answer this way" bullshit and threatening if nurses didn't volunteer for committees that we would be assigned to committees (Magnet officials look for nurse involvement in that kind of stuff).

So this hospital that has treated it's nurses like crap and loses them left and right tried to pull a fast one on the Magnet inspectors. It didn't work..Magnet officials cited too many nurses have jumped ship and not enough "nursing research" existed at the facility.

When will administrators learn that bedside nurses run the show..keep us happy, we stay, they get Magnet. Treat us like dirt for years, we leave, and they are shit out of luck when it comes to getting Magnet Status.

I'm a nurse in San Francisco. He didn't drop his fight with nurses. The nurses took his fucking ratios and rammed them up his Nazi ass. He had NO choice. The sentence stating that he "dropped his fight" implies that (a) he had a choice, (b) he was being really benevolent towards nurses by doing so and (c)He never really meant what he said in the first place.

If he had had his say, nurses would be forced to work with unsafe patient ratios endangering the lives of their patients. Furthermore, that shit head wanted to cancel out mandatory breaks for nurses. Now, that seems kind of fucked up when airline pilots and flight attendants get mandatory breaks. I work in ICU with complicated equipment and medications that must be CLOSELY monitored. If I'm tired, I become distracted, and a small medicatin error can kill a patient. Would any of you want to have a family member being under the care of a nurse who's worn out from working a 12-hour shift with no break? That's EXACTLY what that shit hole tried to do. We need to deport his ugly ass back to Austria, revoke that Nazi's passport and ban him from ever entering this country again.

36. Arnold is a stupid, stupid, stupid person to even start this
EVERYONE (well, everyone except for Arnold) knows how important nurses are in our society. About the only time we interact with them professionally is when we REALLY NEED THEIR HELP. I guess the same thing can be said for librarians, for that matter.

Arnold would have had more success blaming California's problems on street mimes or those guys that play the banjo at Shakey's Pizza.
