WP: Group Trains Air Force Cadets to Proselytize (lawsuit filed)
Group Trains Air Force Cadets to Proselytize
By Alan Cooperman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, November 12, 2005; Page A06

A private missionary group has assigned a pair of full-time Christian ministers to the U.S. Air Force Academy, where they are training cadets to evangelize among their peers, according to a confidential letter to supporters.

The letter makes clear that the organized evangelization effort has continued this year despite an outcry over alleged proselytizing at the academy that has prompted a Pentagon investigation, congressional hearings, a civil lawsuit and new Air Force guidelines on religion.

"Praise God that we have been allowed access by the Academy into the cadet areas to minister among the cadets. We have recently been given an unused classroom to meet with cadets at any time during the day," the husband-and-wife team of Darren and Gina Lindblom said in the Oct. 11 letter to their donors.

Following allegations of religious intolerance at the academy, the Air Force issued interim guidelines in late August that caution senior officers against discussing their faith with subordinates. But the guidelines do not limit "voluntary, peer to peer discussions," and they do not say whether Air Force officials can provide office space or other assistance to professional missionaries who train cadets to evangelize among their peers.

The Lindbloms' letter was made public by Michael L. "Mikey" Weinstein, a 1977 Air Force Academy alumnus who was a White House lawyer in the Reagan administration. He has filed a federal lawsuit accusing the Air Force of violating the First Amendment's establishment clause by fostering evangelical Christianity over all faiths....

2. this is unconscionable....
I remember in College having to all but "fight off" the Campus Crusaders for Christ, who had taken over the dorm one over from mine. Those poor freshmen were absolutely hounded by these nuts and being freshmen were not generally up to the task of telling them to get the "hell" away.

At the academy with all the hazing and whatever else goes on, I'm sure it must be sheer hell trying to keep some distance from these harpies.

No surprise, given we are talking CO Springs, but this can not be tolerated.

15. Try spending your freshman year at Baylor
during the CCFC. I finally came up with a come back. They would ask...Have you found Christ. I would look them dead in the eye and say Why, have you lost him again? That was enough to keep them at bay until I could get away to North Texas State. Longest year of my life...and I am religious.

20. Isn't that to be expected at a Baptist university?
I'm not really informed about Baylor. Do they use taxpayer money, are they supported by Texas or is there some other problem that makes Baylor a government sponsor or sponsored organization that promotes religion? If so, then it is something we should complain about and oppose. If not, on the other hand, then isn't a Baptist university the proper place for such activities and isn't anyone who goes there sort of forewarned?

The U.S. Air Force Academy is a very different story. It is a part of the U.S. government. Young people go there because they want to be an officer in the Air Force. Religion should not be promoted in any official way. To do so would be a violation of the Constitution.

5. I want my taxes back!!!
This is why there is a backlash against Christians.
It's like trying to fight cancer!

Hey jesus assholes!
Nobody is trying to stop you from going to church, okay?

Knock it off!
Stop being so scared you have to control and change others. If it's all a charade it will still be okay. Relax -accept what life is. It's really okay.

It's okay for me and many others who feel comfortable with the real world. If it's not with you, then go ahead and be scared and leave us the fuck alone.

7. See? There you go, picking on the poor Christians again.
Whatever happened to religious freedom?
I mean. like the freedom to bug the shit out of unbelievers, atheists & heretics in order to save their souls. The freedom to do whatever you have to to get the word out about the One True Religion, the right to suppress false beliefs, the right to torture infidels if that's what it takes to save them from Hell. The freedom to burn the tools of Satan at the stake, thereby purifying society.

What's the matter with you anyway?

11. As long as religion is allowed in public, this will go on.
Religious practice, including symbol-wearing, needs to be declared to be as private a function as having a whiz.

14. Ok...The Air Force claimed they investigated this crap
which means, to me, they are participating in this evangelization program. Congress needs to reopen hearings immediately and demand that this be stopped or pull all funding from the academy.

19. Of course they are -- they forced out a chaplain who complained
Edited on Mon Nov-14-05 02:06 PM by LostinVA
about it (a female chaplain, btw). They know what's going on, and don't give a damn. Some even encourage it. Like the rape stuff. That wasn't about sex, it was about control and showing female cadets who's superior, who's "better"- now they are doing it to the non-Christian cadets... and I bet it's the same type of person doing it. And, the same officers who turned their eyes away doing the sexual assaults are doing it now... the AF always had a rep that it was better than the other Armed Forces... whatever.

21. Why not make the military all-Christian and stop the charade?
That way, they won't have any Jews, Pagans, Atheists, Hindus, Muslims, etc. getting in the way of dropping bombs on the next country full of brown-skinned people.

:sarcasm:
