EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J., Nov. 11 - Three days after his party suffered a decisive loss in the New Jersey governor's race, the chairman of the state's Republican Party suggested on Friday that it would be difficult though not impossible to win a statewide election in the foreseeable future.
Tom Wilson, the chairman, said several factors were at work against the party, which has not had one of its statewide candidates win since 1997.
He said his party faced inherent disadvantages, noting that New Jersey has 270,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans and that the state's Democratic Party has more financial resources.
To reach what Mr. Wilson called a "reasonably level playing field," he said, a successful Republican candidate would need an extra dose of charisma, a particular expertise, an appealing personal or family history - or, better yet, all of the above.
