1,100 Lawyers Leave Saddam Defense Team
AMMAN, Jordan - Some 1,100 Iraqi lawyers have withdrawn from Saddam Hussein's defense team, citing insufficient protection following the slayings of two peers representing co-defendants of the ousted Iraqi leader.

In a statement obtained Sunday, the lawyers did not say whether Saddam's chief Iraqi attorney, Khalil al-Dulaimi, was among those who withdrew. But the statement said other members of the team in Baghdad were continuing their duties "under complex and dangerous circumstances."

Support lawyers for Saddam's team in Jordan were not immediately available for comment.

However, the head of the investigative judges in Saddam's dozen cases, Raid Juhi, said Sunday the withdrawal of the defense team "will not affect the work of the court and it will continue its legal measures."

4. If they were charging American rates....
Say they were dirt cheap at $100 an hour, with billing target of 30 hours a week.

That's $3.3 million a week, or $171 million a year.

5. What?
You can't make a living practicing law at $100 an hour. $200 an hour is about the bottom.

6. To begin with, 6,000 lawyers
from countries neighbouring Iraq (Syria, Jordan, etc) put themselves forward to defend him, I read somewhere.

7. How many lawyers
does it take to screw in a light bulb?

Answer:

It depends.

Depends on what?

It depends on how many the client can afford.

(This from a lawyer.)

I can see where with the multiplicity and complexity of charges against him, and the uncertainties of the law under which it is suggested to try him, where a good case can be made for a significant legal staff; (maybe 30 or thereabouts),

but 1100 is absurd.

(And who is paying them?)

13. He has 2200 lawyers? Really?
With that many lawyers, and the death rate in Baghdad, it's probable that the one lawyer was killed according to the law of averages.

You probably couldn't throw a stone in downtown Baghdad without hitting a Saddam lawyer.

15. At what point does having that many lawyers together
become a PAC and at what point does it become a political party?

17. Methinks Saddam will be "suicided" before this trial
takes off. Wouldn't want people to know just WHO gave him those weapons he had before. (I bet most Americans do not know, even though it's readily available info.)
