Santorum: Don't put intelligent design in classroom
Bill Vidonic - Times Staff

BEAVER FALLS - U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum said Saturday that he doesn't believe that intelligent design belongs in the science classroom.

Santorum's comments to The Times are a shift from his position of several years ago, when he wrote in a Washington Times editorial that intelligent design is a "legitimate scientific theory that should be taught in the classroom." But on Saturday, the Republican said that, "Science leads you where it leads you."

~snip~

Earlier this summer, President Bush said he favored teaching intelligent design in the classroom. With Santorum running for re-election next year, and with Bush and the Republican Party taking some significant hits in public confidence in recent months, Santorum insisted he is not trying to distance himself from Bush.

Santorum said he still supports President Bush, even though on Friday, he said in Philadelphia that mistakes had been made in the Iraq war, and that at least a portion of the blame lies with the White House. Saturday, Santorum said of Bush, "I don't agree with everything he does," but said that overall, he considers Bush a good president and that he has "done a lot" for the country and for Santorum himself.

~snip~

Can't this 'person' stand by his convictions? What precipitated this? The polls or Rome?

I say it doesn't matter, he's finished.

52. Gee, does that make him a flip-flopper?
Sorry ricky-dear. We know what your original intent was. You're just looking at that vote in the Dover school board and you're scared to death that the voters are going to give you the same heave-ho they gave to the eight buy-bull wackos who got dumped last Tuesday.

I think you're a little too late.

Besides, what's to keep you from flip-flopping back to your old knuckle-dragger preferences once you've sweet-talked the voters into giving you a lease extension?

Funny how moderate he's trying to sound now. Sorry, sanctimonium. we see through that hypocritical crap. I just hope others in Pennsylvania remain unswayed, also. You never know with some people.

10. When he says it's dumb, you know it's dumb
This might indeed have been precipitated by the fact that the Vatican supports the teaching of evolution. Santorum is not the most independent of thinkers. Nor is he the most thinker of thinkers. But considering the rout of the Dover, PA board, he may have seen that the voters don't like what they see either, and although Santo' may not be able to save his own ass anymore, he might be trying to salvage things for his party. Just a guess.

In any event, it's fun to see him squirm like this.

17. As one of Ricky's constituents
I just took it upon myself to write a letter asking for an explanation about why Senator Santorum supported the teaching of ID several years ago, but now believes it doesn't have a place in public school science classes. The letter was carefully worded to not give away my political leanings, I can't wait to see how his staff spins it, if I even get a reply.

21. ID is just the Fundies double talk of Biblical Creationism
They are trying to skirt around the issue when what they really want is BIBLICAL CREATIONISM. The Vatican just came out AGAIN and said they see no problem with Evolution.

So who does Little Ricky back? His Fundie Republicans or his Church? If nothing else, the man is a "catholic" to the nth degree and if that means parting company with the "christian right", I guess he will do it.

19. The political wind blew ID from a school board in PA
The Pope has said that evolution is implied in the Bible. So Ricky is having to let go of his republicanism because it does not parallel the ideas of his constituents or God as he knows him.

I give him credit for taking the views of the people of PA on this and for taking the view of Jesus as his faith believes it to be. But he had to change to this view because the one that he held so close is a losing position. He flipped flopped on this issue and he is only trying to save his butt. Regardless of the outcome of next years election he will go back to being a Repug toady. He will reject Jesus and go back to a fundamentalist view, he will reject the views of the people of PA and stump for other repugs.

Dover is in York County. That is a predominately Republican region and they just elected an all Democratic school board because of the intelligent design mess created by the previous board. He is trying to make sure he has the votes in York County. The damage is done. People want this idiot out. He doesn't even live in our state. He is considered an outsider.

And why the hell does Santorum think he should be telling the rest of us what should be taught in public shcools? He thinks public shcools are weird!

T-Ricky home schools his kids:

8:00 - 9:00 - Hypocrisy
9:00 - 10:00 - Lying with a Straight Face
10:00 - 11:00 - Ripping off the Taxpayers
11:00 - 12:00 - The Art of Flip-Flopping
12:00 - 1:00 - Free Lunch (provide by taxpayers)
1:00 -3:00 - Hypocricsy Lab

This is what a CATHOLIC NUN had to say about T-Ricky in a letter to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

"Sen. Santorum teaches his children the following lessons:
1) Take advantage of the system whenever you can.
2) The little guy pays while the rich and powerful guy gets away with it.
3) As a Catholic, you have no obligation to pay your share to the common good in spite of Catholic social doctrine. "

his mind, to rethink his idiotic old position. I am glad he did. The more people who speak against teaching ID , the better off this nation will be. We are already, and have been for years, lagging in really heavy science education compared to other nations. If I had my way, no one could get out of high school without four years of science. I can't even imagine ID being brought up 10 or 15 years ago on national news. Now it's sort of there, being discussed on talk shows, etc. It's sickening.

do with it. The pope spoke out about this awhile ago, but the Dover school board election is much more recent, AND hits far closer to home. As the old saying goes... all politics is local. I don't think the pope's statement has much to do with it. I think he's realizing that the ID people getting dumped in Dover - could EASILY happent to him. All he's doing is watching the weather and trying to plan strategically for the climate change. But when you're designed for beach-wear and the glacier's coming, you're probably sunk.

I soitenly hope so! I've got my donation money ready, Mr. Casey...
