Court sidesteps 'In God We Trust' dispute

GINA HOLLAND

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court on Monday sidestepped a dispute over the
constitutionality of putting "In God We Trust" on government buildings.
<snip>
The court did not comment in rejecting an appeal over an "In God We
Trust" inscription on the Davidson County Government Center in
Lexington, N.C.

The inscription, in 18-inch block letters, was paid for with donations
from individuals and churches in 2002. It is more prominent than the
name of the building, according to opponents.

Charles F. Lambeth Jr. and Michael D. Lea, two lawyers who regularly
practice in the North Carolina center, filed the lawsuit.

1. Shouldn't it actually be an
"In Freemasonry We Trust" dispute?

:sarcasm:

3. No it should be
"In the Grand Architect of The Universe We Trust" (Freemasons)

or

"In the God of Nature We Trust" (Deists)

2. Maybe we need to take up a collection and demand that
we do just THAT. . .and make the letters even bigger, too.

That should make the christofascists heads spin out of control . .

4. I thought Falwell and Robertson wanted it to say,
"In the Intelligent Designers We Trust!"

BTW, who made the rule that there could only be ONE intelligent designer?

5. So if a bunch of people raised enough money to put "In Flying
Spaghetti Monster We Trust" on the building, that would also be all right with the idiots?

This is the kind of stuff that pisses me off.

The only reason for pulling a stunt like this is to remind non-christians that we are living in a "christian nation".

What other reason is there for them to put this on the building now?

The fact that the churches paid for it tells me all I need to know.

N.C. county will fight 'In God We Trust' lawsuit

By The Associated Press
08.15.03

LEXINGTON, N.C. — Davidson County has hired a law firm to fight a lawsuit seeking to remove the U.S. motto, "In God We Trust," from the front of the county government building.

The county commissioners said on Aug. 12 they had decided in a closed-door meeting last month to battle the case in court. Hundreds of people had attended the commission's regular meeting to support the motto. The announcement was welcomed with applause and shouts of "Amen."

"I do not think you'll be ashamed of the decision you made to fight this lawsuit," Jason Grubb, a local resident, told the commission.

The motto was installed on the Governmental Center in December after it was approved by commissioners on a 4-2 vote.

The U.S. Motto Action Committee, a group organized to support the motto on government buildings, said it had collected 15,000 signatures of support on petitions since the lawsuit was filed.

6. I wonder what would happen
if someone, for example, being accused of a crime, told the county that they could NOT stand trial in the courthouse because the inscription violated their religious beliefs. . .and that because of that inscription they have no confidence of receiving a fair and just hearing?

7. I think I can guess.
Have a look at what happens in that city when you speak up for non-christians:

N.C. judge requests religion-neutral oaths, courtrooms

By The Associated Press
03.15.04

LEXINGTON, N.C. — A district court judge has asked local officials to remove religious references, including oaths that end "so help me God" and a traditional blessing for the state and court, in courtrooms when he presides.

Judge James M. Honeycutt said in a letter that the court system is seeing an increasing number of people who are not necessarily Christian.

***

"It’s totally in opposition to the very basis of our constitution, the very basis for our laws," said Rick Lanier, a former member of the Davidson County Board of Commissioners and a member of a group that paid to install the sign.

"He’s a judge. He should be subject to complying with the bylaws that we established and founded for our nation," Lanier said."Because we are a Christian nation and we’ve been a Christian nation for 300 years, the thing that bothers me is, are we conforming to a minority?"

Not only do they not know what the hell the Constitution says, they don't care.

And we shouldn't let little things like this bother us.

19. They let Tom DeLay switch judges over political parties...
And the sign above the courthouse didn't even say, "In The Democratic Party We Trust," either.

I would argue that a non-christian has a right to request a change of venue to a non-christian court.

Want to start a collection? I'd donate!

Or we could make an FSM sandwich board with that message and take turns picketing with it outside the courthouse.

11. Man was designed by a group, "And God said,
Let us make man in our image, after our likeness". (Genesis 1:26)

That group effort was a failure "And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart." (Genesis 6:6)

20. The Universe was designed by Bill Gates...
that's why there are so many errors, glitches and failures and why so many creatures on Earth are running around with obsolete code installed.

Sloppy, sloppy programing.

Of course, The Designer could be a Republican-- that would explain why there is so much hatred, inequality and disorder in the Universe.

14. Kneel Before Zod!
I live for the day when...

1.) Extremist, evangelical, theocratical religion is purged from the public square and schools

2.) and "In God We Trust" is removed from the money

These are 2 things that I want.

That, plus what you listed, would be a good start.

17. Yes. I agree.
Forgot that one.

Go back to the pre-McCarthy pledge. Although I don't think a pledge is really necessary at all.

Teach children so that they choose to respect their country and laws without being brainwashed by mindlessly repeating the "State prayer."
