China Edging Out U.S. for APEC Leadership
China Edging Out U.S. for APEC Leadership

BUSAN, South Korea -- It's bigger, faster and ready to throw its weight around.

When China joined the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum 14 years ago, it was the lone communist behemoth among a field of nimble market economies. Today, it's a leading actor in the annual forum that represents about 60 percent of the global economy and nearly half of world trade.

Analysts say China has virtually edged out the United States as the dominant economic and political force among the 21 Pacific Rim economies gathering this week in this South Korean port city.

"When APEC was created, the United States was certainly the leading country in the mix," said Greg Mastel, chief international trade adviser for the Washington law firm Miller & Chevalier. But China's blistering economic growth and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States changed that, distracting Washington from Asian trade objectives and allowing China to play an increasingly pivotal role, Mastel said.

1. So does this mean that they're not gonna heed to tongue lashing that
blivet** gave them yesterday?

3. We'll be lucky if they don't decide to call in their chips
and demand all their money back that they've used to prop up our economy.

4. They're not taking it
I just heard on Bloomberg that the Chinese told George to not meddle with Taiwan after he told China to become more democratic like Taiwan and take advantage of economic growth that a demoracy would bring.

Apologies for that awkward run-on sentence.

5. So, do the Chinese really think that blivet** is smart enough to heed
their warning? Haven't they been paying attention. Little george thinks that he's so big and bad he can tell the whole planet how to behave. He's the final judge of wrong/right, good/bad, evil/and whatever.

2. First APEC, then the world
My worry is that China will use cutthroat policies to stay on top. What do the multinational corporations think about this? Are they more powerful than China (with whom they have forged many an unholy alliance)or will they eventually view that government as a threat?

6. I don't think the multinational corporations have
ANY loyalty to the U.S. I think they'll just ally themselves with the Chinese government if China ever forecloses on the U.S. I.O.U.s that China is holding. (Isn't it ironic how unforgiving the Republicans were when they voted on the bankruptcy bill?)

If the multinationals had any loyalty to the U.S. at all, they would have made at least one decision that was good for this country instead of making every single decision that is good for their executives.

7. Oh, I agree
but I'm wondering what the corporations will do if they don't like the deal the Chinese government is going to give them.
