Cheney Sidesteps Travel Disclosure Rules
Cheney Sidesteps Travel Disclosure Rules
Unlike the rest of the White House, Cheney refuses to make his outside travel public

By Kate Sheppard and Bob Williams

WASHINGTON, November 16, 2005 — Vice President Dick Cheney and his staff have been unilaterally exempting themselves from long-standing travel disclosure rules followed by the rest of the executive branch, including the Office of the President, the Center for Public Integrity has discovered.

Cheney's office also appears to have stuck taxpayers with untold millions in travel costs rather than accepting trip sponsors' funds that the rules would require to be disclosed.

It's not as if those in Cheney's office don't indulge in the type of junkets that are routinely funded by private sources. Instead of accepting reimbursement for such trips like other government travelers, it appears that his office labels them "official travel." As a result, however, the public is kept largely unaware of where he and his staff are traveling, with whom they are meeting with and how much it costs, even though tax dollars are covering the bill.

It's also not as if Cheney hasn't faced questions about secrecy and his travel in the past. In January 2003, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was reportedly Cheney's guest aboard Air Force Two on a flight south for a winter duck hunting trip at a property owned by an oil executive in southern Louisiana

4. Freeper Hypocrisy
All you need to know about what a bunch of hypocrites those on the right are is to take any piece of news like this...anything at all...and substitute the current administration official for their equivalent in the Clinton administration, and then imagine how loud and often Freepers would howl about the utter injustice of it all....

But since it's their boys........................(crickets chirping).................

11. Why Should It Be Necessary
Edited on Wed Nov-16-05 11:27 AM by Frustratedlady
...to call him on it? Why isn't it standard procedure for ALL travel to include a report prior to of WHY the trip is necessary and WHAT/WHERE/WHO will be on the trip, with a detailed report upon their return? These people are getting paid to do their job and they should be held accountable for their actions. Enough is enough.

I, too, can't wait to see that arrogant smirk wiped off his face, as well as his wife's mug. She is almost as vile as Cheney.

15. Cheney Sidesteps Travel Disclosure Rules, Reports CPI
Wednesday November 16, 10:00 am ET
Unlike the Rest of the White House, the Vice President Refuses to Let Sponsors Pay for His Trips - Instead, Taxpayers Pick Up the Tab

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Vice President Dick Cheney and his staff have been declaring themselves exempt from the travel disclosure laws followed by the rest of the White House, a Center for Public Integrity investigation released today found.

The vice president's office appears to have stuck taxpayers with millions of dollars in travel costs and has avoided disclosing its expenses and destinations.

The private sector routinely covers the travel expenses associated with government officials' appearances -- of which Cheney himself has made more than 275 since 2001 -- at think tanks, trade organizations and universities around the world. When the private sector picks up the tab, however, federal law requires that officials report where they went, how much it cost, and who paid.

Yet since 2001, Cheney's office -- unlike Vice President Al Gore before him -- has claimed that it is not bound by the travel disclosure rules the rest of the White House complies with, the Center found. Letters from the vice president's counsel assert that the office is not "an agency" of the executive branch, but adds as "a matter of comity" that none of the staff has accepted travel payments from a non-federal source.
