Pelosi: 'Torture is Not Consistent With American Values'

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi joined other Democratic leaders at a press stakeout this morning after the Democratic Caucus meeting to discuss the House Republicans' opposition to banning torture. Below are Pelosi's remarks:

"Thank you very much, Mr. Menendez. I want to commend you, the Chairman of our Caucus, for your leadership on these issues, about honoring our responsibility to the American people. To protect them is our first responsibility. And what is happening in Iraq raises a big question as to whether it is making America safer.

"When we put our young men and women in harm's way, we always owe the American people the truth, and that is what the Congress is asking the President for: the truth.

...

"I urge the Speaker to appoint House conferees to the defense appropriations bill immediately so that Congressman Murtha can offer his motion to instruct conferees, which would demonstrate the House's strong opposition to the torture of detainees. We must send a clear message to the world that torture is not consistent with American values."

1. Neither is Shredding the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the...
International treaties, like Geneva Conventions, or bringing back the enslavement of women and discrimination against minority groups, but here we are, and there stands our Democratic Party, the all too loyal opposition. But whom are they loyal to? There's the rub.

The Democratic Party has got to come out against the GOP in toto; from tax cuts to personal autonomy issues to foreign policy, and especially to these Wars of Agression! There's no way Triangulation will work these days--it looks too much like permission to steal, lie, pillage, and cheat.

Ever. On the other hand morally blind pragmatism and destruction has.

8. Wishful thinking.
As I've said before: if America's essential benevolence hadn't been grossly overestimated, we wouldn't be in this war; the President's case for war (be it WMDs, Al Qaeda, or "spreading democracy") was only effective coupled with the reality that "It would be unconscionably wrong" was an insufficiently persuasive argument against the war.

This reason can be extended to the torture issue. How long have we known about Abu Ghraib? And we're still even talking about it like a hypothetical? The paradox is that if America actually had the 'American values' Pelosi wants to presume of it, there wouldn't be a context for her to make this speech, because Americans would already have torn down this administration in flames.

11. Torture is not something human beings do.
Mechatanketra, I totally agree. And it's no different than the other things that have happened under "the people's watch". You said it so well.

Top Democrat on Defense committee to debut 'dramatic' proposal on Iraq

Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) is slated to make what Democratic insiders tell RAW STORY will be a 'bold' announcement surrounding U.S. policy in Iraq on Thursday.

Murtha, one of the Democrats' more conservative and hawkish members, is the ranking Democrat on the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) issued a press advisory Wednesday evening which simply said, "Congressman John Murtha, Ranking Member on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, will make a major announcement on Iraq tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in HC-9 of the Capitol."

<snip>

Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA) told RAW STORY earlier this week to expect a 'dramatic' move in the Appropriations Committee.
