NYT: Iraq Dogs President as He Crosses Asia to Promote Trade
Iraq Dogs President as He Crosses Asia to Promote Trade
By DAVID E. SANGER
Published: November 18, 2005

PUSAN, South Korea, Friday, Nov. 18 - President Bush may have come to Asia determined to show leaders here that his agenda is far broader than Iraq and terrorism, but at every stop, and every day, Mr. Bush and his aides have been fighting a rearguard action to justify how the United States got into Iraq and how to get out.

On Friday morning, as Mr. Bush was meeting the leaders of Southeast Asia, his press secretary issued an unusually blistering statement responding to Representative John P. Murtha's call for a pullout from Iraq, declaring that Mr. Murtha, a Pennsylvania Democrat who had often backed Mr. Bush's military initiatives, was "endorsing the policy positions of Michael Moore and the extreme liberal wing of the Democratic Party."

Standing Thursday with President Roh Moo Hyun of South Korea, Mr. Bush leapt on a question about the charges that he had manipulated prewar intelligence. "I expect there to be criticism, but when Democrats say that I deliberately misled the Congress and the people, that's irresponsible," he said, as Mr. Roh looked on silently.

On Friday morning, Mr. Roh's defense minister, Yoon Kwang Ung, announced that South Korea planned to withdraw about a third of its 3,200 troops from northern Iraq next year. While the step has been rumored for two months, it was unclear why it was announced WHILE MR. BUSH WAS THERE.

But if Mr. Bush's aides were surprised about the timing, his hosts, both here and in Japan, have appeared surprised at Mr. Bush's tone, which has given them an unobstructed window into the growing debate in Washington about how the United States got into Iraq, and when it should get out....

1. This just shows that Bush has not an ounce of intelligence nor...
does he know the first thing about diplomacy. Why is he hanging out his dirty laundry while visiting foreign countries? I do believe he has totally lost it and is not fit to be president. He needs some psychiatric help real soon.

3. He has to respond, because he started it
You know that quaint tradition where politics stops at the water's edge? It used to be that you laid off criticizing the President when he went on a foreign trip--it was just considered the polite thing to do.

Well, as Monkey left for his trip, he stopped on his way out the door, at Elmendorf, and tossed a steaming pile of shit behind him. And now, he is shocked, shocked, I say, that someone would pick up that steaming pile and toss it right back at him!

Bush sure has changed politics...for the worse! Now, no faltering President will be allowed any breathing room, and it is all because of his slash-and-burn attitude towards the oppostion. He brought it all on himself. He is clearly not getting good advice; his administration is IMPLODING.

10. I couldn't help but read between the lines -
look at this statement: "but when they say I mislead, that's irresponsible". Mr. Roh looked on silently.

I have no trouble visualizing that scene. Bush flailing around, like a fish on a dock. Trying his damndest to be passionate, but only coming off like a used car salesman who sees the customer backing off. The whole thing smacks of desperation.

I can also see Mr. Roh, watching Bush with narrow eyes. He knows he's been duped. But - Roh will smile again at Bush, and clink the glasses together when they have dinner. There will be golden promises of mutual prosperity, and hot trade in the coming year. All the platitudes.

But when he's gone ......Roh and his advisors will sit down and discuss Bush. They will NEVER call him an idiot - they're too polite. But - they will consider him a dangerous lunatic - like a bull in a china shop.

11. I think his dilemma is ......
That he has nothing to say until someone puts words on paper for him to read or memorize.
not only is it apparent that he knows nothing about diplomacy, it is also more and more apparent that his handlers and advisers know little or nothing of diplomacy.

They were obviously hired based on qualifications of smear and attack, that's their only response to every situation.

The greatest effect is lost lost however, since the MSM is showing a bit of tentativeness in amplifying the smears and attacks. And, have joined somewhat, the discussion of what may have went werong.

2. remember how the MSM were shilling, saying that Asia would be better
than Latin America?

That, just like the idea that Iraqis would greet us with flowers after we bombed them, was nothing more than a neocon daydream.

Oh, and Chimpy is now appearing very, very unstable to Asia, which will not help his dirty little war one bit.

4. Plan A--Leave town, talk about trade... Oops that dog won't hunt
Plan B-Make a quick unnanounced trip to "THE FRONT," Pardon the turkey (not Libby, not yet), and then retreat to the pig farm...Oops, that woman Cindy Sheehan is gonna be there again looking to make conversational relations.

Plan C--Uh, punt. Declare a Terr'a-lert and spend December in an undisclosed location enjoying a snow storm with your buddies Jim Beam and Joe Cuervos.

7. The high-pitched whining petulant tone is almost
enough to make gradual hearing loss seem a blessing. While they claim to want a good honest debate, and have no intention of suppressing "other opinions," you'd never know it from the high lonesome keening noise from Scottie, Hastert, Cheney, and that brushcutting Charlie MacCarthy.

I especially enjoyed this from Hastert:

"To add insult to injury, this is done while the president is on foreign soil."

What, he didn't bring mommie along to salve his feelings??

They're as pathetic as a pile of broken toys on the day after Christmas.

8. Bushco expected
semi-pliant trade hungry nations to be manipulated into fodder for the folks back here and also try to trick or pass the buck or wag the dog to get things they wanted as well. After China, SK anticipated the US pressure and undercut that nonsense with a troop withdrawal. So NOW can they get down to trade talks and REAL discussion of the NK problem where the Bush political agenda is extremely dangerous to the situation?

12. From the article.........
"It's one of those things that get you either way," said the official, who insisted on anonymity because he was discussing internal White House debates. "If you open up a debate about what went right and what went wrong, there's no end of it. But if you take the position that we took - that we're looking to the future - you have to demonstrate progress."

If they debate about what went right and what went wrong, Even the dumbest of the dumb will see that everything they did was wrong.

If they take the position they're looking to the future - they have to demonstrate progress. But, even they know as more of the public are becoming to realize that progress was never their objective.

so their only alternative is smear, attack, cloud, and shift responsibilty to opponents, until they can gather their ill-gotten booty and skip town.

13. Iraq Questions Follow Bush Overseas
BUSAN, South Korea (AP) -
For President Bush, there's no respite from Iraq. Even traveling in Asia, he's had to deal with an Iraq rebuff from a friend, South Korea, and with turmoil over his policies back home.

Criticism of the war in Congress and calls for a pullout of American troops have drawn a no-holds-barred verbal counterattack from the traveling White House.

The harsh words from home were compounded Friday by unwelcome news both in Iraq and here.

In Iraq, suicide bombers killed scores of worshippers at two Shiite mosques near the Iranian border, while a pair of car bombs targeting a Baghdad hotel housing Western journalists killed more Iraqis.

20. I hope he has a complete
nervous breakdown publicly. That way, enough people can be witnesses, and he can't order some city nuked because he can't get his way. His SOTU speech would be a good place, but probably not possible. Maybe at a rare press conference.
