Bush to stand firm on Iraq policy (Saturday Iraq Speech won't Attack Dems)

http://today.reuters.com/news/NewsArticle.aspx?type=topNews&storyID=2005-11-18T182146Z_01_SCH865694_RTRUKOC_0_US-BUSH-ASIA.xml

Bush to stand firm on Iraq policy

PUSAN, South Korea (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush will argue for sticking with his Iraq policy Saturday in a speech to U.S. troops that aides said would avoid attacks on Democrats who accuse him of manipulating pre-war intelligence.

...

But officials said Bush in his speech would steer clear of responding to Democrats who have accused him and others in his administration of hyping intelligence to justify the Iraq war.

Bush would speak in similar vein to his series of lengthy speeches in recent weeks about his "strategy for victory in the war on terror," particularly in Iraq, and would say "why it's important that we prevail and how we plan to do it", said Bush presidential counselor Dan Bartlett.

4. Bush = Blah, Blah, Blah. No one is listening to him anyway.
He has become the Orrin Hatch of the White House. He talks and talks and talks and never says anything.

Even my Repug relatives have tuned him out because he just does Blah, Blah, Blah.

10. This is a big victory! It shows the "attack the messenger" ploy is dead!
Edited on Fri Nov-18-05 02:29 PM by Brotherjohn
The WH itself has even realized, thanks to a requrgent media, resurgent Dems, and an awakening populace, that they can't get away with this anymore!

What do they have left? Their words about the leadup to war are now known to be false (this is almost an implicit acknowledgement of that, or at least that they can't challenge that perception). The public grew tired of the "stand firm" bull months if not years ago.

This pull-back on rhetoric speaks volumes about the credibility of the opposition vs. Bush's.

12. Indeed. Kind of like after Katrina, when he was questioned about
visiting the region, as he would prolly just be in the way. So what did he do after that, he canceled the trip...

14. I agree
Not only that BUT Bush's attempt to connect Iraq and the War on Terror will not work either. Bush is close to becoming cooked.

13. Christ, can't he speak to someone besides troops?
They are such chickenshit cowards...he can't go in front of regular voters to talk...he has to force troops to listen to him all the time. It is becoming absolutely ludicrous.

So where are the terraists planning to steal the sneeze guards from the local salad bar? They should have shown up today.

Is it possible that Karl Rove is aware that we're on to his little games?

16. HA! He's getting nervous. Remember when all he could manage to
sputter was "stay the course". Now he has a "strategy for victory in the war on terror". Suddenly he has "a plan"? Obviously the comments from the Dems lately are taking a toll.

Can't wait for him to explain the plan to everyone. The speech will probably be filled with the words "strategy, victory, plan, prevail, success, ...". Of course there is no actual plan, but he can pretend there is. No details allowed due to national security and all, ya know. In the end it will still come across as "stay the course", but I'm willing to bet we'll never hear him utter those 3 words ever again. :eyes:

18. Bush is a hypocrite with no right to call Democrats spineless
President Bush and his entire administration should lay off the counter-offensive they've launched on Democrats who advocate immediate withdrawal from Iraq. A number of these Democrats are decorated veterans of foreign wars, and President Bush, VP Cheney, and White House spokesperson Scott McClellan have called them spineless cowards. It's one thing to argue that we should stay the course in Iraq, but it is quite another to say that Democrats are losing nerve when party leaders like John Kerry and John Murtha served honorably and most of Bush's administration (and all of the Republican leadership in Congress: Delay, Frist, and Hastert) took deferments to avoid going to Vietnam.

The true face of republicans is becoming apparent to many more Americans - cowards who slur true patriots from a safe distance.

Soon, only the most stupid and gullible will remain in support of Bu$h.

23. Welcome to DU!
Great post. I will enjoy reading more of your posts, judging by the first one. I'm proud of Murtha for speaking up, too. With his history, it's going to be hard to ignore his input, and he has military experience, unlike Bush, Cheney, and the other chickenhawks who crammed this war down our throats.

Again, welcome to DU...:hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi:

focus on looking "presidential". Rove's gonna try and get him off the defensive stance. They have to get back to that "strong leader" image. :eyes:
