21. Named Storms have occurred as late as January.
Edited on Fri Nov-18-05 10:11 PM by happyslug
On December 31st, 1954 a Tropical wave form and became a Hurricane on January 1st (and thus become a 1955 Storm instead of the 1954 storm). Other than it no other storm is reported in January or February (Through a winter storm in 1819 might have been a Hurricane but records are unclear, and other unreported storms in other years are possible).

For some information on the 1955 January Storm.
http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/Landsea/deadly/Table8.htm
http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/general/lib/lib1/nhclib/1955.pdf
http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/general/lib/lib1/nhclib/libpage13.htm

They have been Four Hurricanes in December from 1944-2000 (The last one being Nicole in 1998). Since 2000 you have had four December storms:
Peter AND Odette in 2003 (Both Formed in December, the first time two storms formed in December since 1887).
Olga in 2001 and
Otto in 2004 (Both of these storms formed in November but lasted till December).

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/pastall.shtml

Thus while technically the Hurricane Season ends on November 30th, you can have storms into the beginning of January.

as a former waitperson myself, i have the utmost respect for those in the profession...and i tip very well- provided the service is at least adequate, and depending on the circumstances- i don't reward total sloth- and as a former, i can tell if the person is giving an effort.

38. you don't know what you were missing-
Edited on Sat Nov-19-05 07:04 PM by MarsThe Cat
i can't help but laugh at people crazy enough to live in a mobile home in florida- who are then surprised/upset when a hurricane 'mobilizes' it...and then they thank the god that would have supposedly sent the storm for sparing their lives...???(that one always puzzled me).

can i help it if i don't like florida all that much? they lord their tropical weather over the rest of the country- until they get a hurricane, then they cry for help and empathy...as a state they've given us at least one bush presidency, and a possible launching pad for another in the form of a governorship.
as a state, they've done a TERRIBLE job, as far as stewardship of natural resources is concerned. the everglades and the reefs suffer so that residents/businesses can enjoy low low tax rates...thanks fellas :hi:

20. there was a killer december storm in 2003
Edited on Fri Nov-18-05 08:54 PM by pitohui
i believe 2003 was the longest season ever, with the first tropical storm in april and the last, peter, in december -- odette also in december killed 2 in the islands

it's highly unlikely tho so let's think positive

2005 has broken every record except length of season -- and it CAN'T break length of season because in 2003 ana formed on april 21 and peter, ended on december 11

2005 didn't open until june so we'd have to go into january or february to catch up

just not gonna happen

either that or tropical storm season will be all yr

think positive

jesus wouldn't allow it, right?

33. I object to the anthropomorphication of weather events
While this storm may be headed toward Florida, or forcasts may predict that it will hit Florida, can we really say that it has targeted Florida? By intelligent design? . . .

In that vein, have you noticed how the Yucatan has beem behaving like a bumper in a pinball game lately?

36. New storm lashes Central America
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4452528.stm

A new tropical storm dumping heavy rain on the east coast of Central America has left at least three people dead.
Tropical Storm Gamma, the 24th of the record-breaking 2005 Atlantic season, caused floods and landslides in Honduras. Belize is also on alert.

Forecasters think Gamma may swing north-east and away from Mexico's Yucatan peninsula which was battered by Hurricane Wilma last month.

The storm is then expected to head for Florida, arriving early next week.
