Iraqi leaders demand timetable for troop withdrawal
CAIRO - Iraqi leaders reached a tentative agreement Monday to demand a timetable for the withdrawal of foreign troops from their war-torn country during talks ahead of a reconciliation conference to be held next year.

Dozens of leaders representing most of Iraq's factions have been holding tough talks in Cairo since Saturday in a bid to reach a common agenda.

In a draft final statement, a copy of which was obtained by AFP, they demanded "a timetable for the immediate withdrawal of foreign troops".

The draft also advocates "immediately setting up a national programme to rebuild the armed forces in a way that will allow them to control the security situation and put an end to terrorist operations".

2. after pressure from the administration, no doubt...
* and company know how bad this is going...my gut is telling me that they are creating this as a way out to save face. When the ensuing blood bath and civil war begin, they just sit back and say "they told us to leave - we had to comply"...

I call bs on this one.

6. I totally agree with you...nice analysis...
The sad fact is...these goons are only worried about the upcoming elections.

They know that they can't go into these approaching elections, with the current situation.

Their only motive is to secure the expansion of their PNAC agenda. We will always have a foothold in Iraq--so they're probably figuring that a full-scale war is no longer needed. We just need some control and the ability to use Iraq as a launching pad for additional illegal invasions.

It's rather sick and I hope to God that the American people do not forget--even if we do pull out of Iraq--that these thugs lied us into war and murdered many.

5. It's become critical to the R's to be out by our mid-term elections
continuing the American military presence in Iraq is a loser.

We should take this opportunity and run with it. The Abramho scandal is going to be the big gun our candidates use to slaughter republican candidates next fall.

8. This will make it a bit awkward for the Bushistas to claim ...
that setting a timetable would upset the stability of the Iraqi government.

15. Iraqi leaders call for U.S. withdrawal timetable
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10147801/

CAIRO, Egypt - Leaders of Iraq’s sharply divided Shiites, Kurds and Sunnis called Monday for a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces in the country and said Iraq’s opposition had a “legitimate right” of resistance.

The final communique, hammered out at the end of three days of negotiations at a preparatory reconciliation conference under the auspices of the Arab League, condemned terrorism, but was a clear acknowledgment of the Sunni position that insurgents should not be labeled as terrorists if their operations do not target innocent civilians or institutions designed to provide for the welfare of Iraqi citizens.

The participants in Cairo agreed on “calling for the withdrawal of foreign troops according to a timetable, through putting in place an immediate national program to rebuild the armed forces ... control the borders and the security situation” and end terror attacks.
