Ahmadinejad: Iran-Iraq relations 'benefit the whole region'

Teheran - Developing Iran-Iraq relations would benefit not just the two countries but also the whole Gulf and Middle East, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared Monday.

'Anybody opposing this expansion just sees its own interests jeopardised,' Ahmadinjead said in a joint press conference with visiting Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.

Ahmadinejad denied any Iranian interference in Iraq's internal affairs and support for insurgents. All such accusations come from those countries 'which have deployed hundreds and thousands of forces in Iraq and impose their policies on the Iraqi people'.

'Peace and stability in Iraq is something that Iran considers as its own victory and therefore Teheran strongly supports the ongoing democratisation process in Iraq,' Ahmadinejad said.

1. Talabani: Sovereign Iraq cannot be prevented from approaching Iran

No world country, including the US, would dare stop Baghdad from approaching Tehran since Iraq is an independent state, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani was quoted as saying Sunday evening.

The Iraqi TV network, also monitored in this western provincial city, quoted Talabani as saying that since Iraq regained independence and sovereignty through elections and in compliance with international law, the country is free to make its own decisions regardless of the wishes of other countries.
