Schmidt in hot water
Three days after Rep. Jean Schmidt was booed off the House floor for saying that "cowards cut and run, Marines never do," the Ohioan she quoted disputed the comments. Danny Bubp, a freshman state representative who is a colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve, told The Enquirer that he never mentioned Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., by name when talking with Schmidt, and he'd never call a fellow Marine a coward

14. Bubp is probably a colonel like Colonel Sanders
The incident has brought unwanted national attention to Bubp's skimpy service record and Taliban activities.

For those not knowing, in 30-odd years as a Marine reservist, Bubp had no combat ribbons and can only claim 3 commendations, one from the army, for good bureaucratic work.

Schmidt - decked out in a red-white-and-blue suit that resembled the U.S. flag - went to the floor and quoted from a telephone conversation with Bubp: "He asked me to send Congress a message: Stay the course.

"He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message: That cowards cut and run, Marines never do."

The comment drew a chorus of boos and shouting from Democrats.

It's unclear whether Schmidt, who will start her 79th day in the House today, knew at the time of her remarks that Murtha had served 37 years in the Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserve.

Both the outfit and her ignorance are unbelievably ROTFL funny:rofl:

4. aren't there some kind of rules about intentionally lying
(using another's name) to slam a fellow house member? If Bubp says he didn't tell her to come to the floor of the House and say what she did in his behalf, seems to me there should be some other kind of retribution due her. Why does a nice big 'punch in the mouth' keep coming to mind? I'm so sick of the repuke tactics....

6. Evidently, she's violated House ethics rules, as well...
http://www.bluegrassreport.org/bluegrass_politics/2005/11/is_mean_jean_sc.html

<snip>
Aside from offending a good chunk of America this weekend by calling Rep. John P. Murtha (D-PA), a 37-year veteran of the Marine Corps, a coward, a quick glance at Rep. Jean Schmidt's (R-OH) campaign website seems to show that she may be violating House ethics rules regarding improper campaign activity by a House member.

In particular, the Campaign Activity manual published by the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct contains the following passage on impermissible use of "official indicia":

In reproducing such materials, the campaign must remove all official indicia, such as the official letterhead from a press release that the congressional office had issued, and any references to the address or telephone number of the congressional office. The name of any congressional staff contact that appeared in the material as issued originally must also be deleted. Subject to the same requirements, such materials may also be posted on the Member’s campaign Web site.

Unfortunately, the home page of Rep. Schmidt's campaign website contains not only the address and telephone numbers of all four of her official congressional offices, but also contains a banner photo of her standing in front of the United States Capitol, as well as the official seal of the House of Representatives which hyper-links to the House website.
</snip>

 She's a pip!

89. that wasn't the controversy most of us had, right?
The tabulators "burnt out due to high humiditity and heat" so they switched to counting the ballots by hadn. People were suspicious because they saw Hackett coming out ahead until the ballots were hand counted. In this case, it wasn't Diebolded, and in a district that went about 65% for Bush in 04, I doubt it was even stolen...

It was still very close.

I do think that that guy is right. Schmidt really seemed okay to some of the more moderate conservatives in her district, but after having opened her mouth, she'd going to have to answer to their wrath next year. It's sad cause she was elected in a special election. she doesn't even get two years before she needs to start campaigning like hell all over again...

62. it's CiNciNNati, BTW (named after a Roman hero)
To set the record straight, the City of Cincinnati went for Kerry-Edwards with a 66% majority. The city is about 310,000; Hamilton County (outside the city) is about 535,000. The neanderthal vote comes from the suburbs (white flight) which is pretty typical across the entire country. Full of SUV-driving, cigarette-smoking, bottle-blondes on cell-phones. Disgusting...
Sadly, Cincy gets tarred with the county...two different animals.

The "Diebold Effect" took place in the surrounding counties, maybe even here. We used punch cards for 30 years; the tabulators which compile the vote are ES&S, and their digital innards are just as subject to malicious programming as DRE's. We'll be using opscan systems next year; things will get worse.

We MUST stop the electronic theft of our vote. EVERYONE
has to get this word out and help focus the MSM - on the GAO Report, for instance. Read Andrew Gumbel's "Steal This Vote." Sobering look at our mythic, esteemed institutions.

105. Ah, Cincinnati, the city where 2 good 'ol boys get away with murder
Back in the '70's (Or early '80's)
2 laid off auto workers were drinking one night and decided to take there misplaced rage out on a "Jap" that had got them laid off.
Turns out they BEAT TO DEATH a Laotian teenager.
They were acquitted, and when the family brought a civil rights case against them, they beat that too.
Seems that if you are any color but white there, you don't have a right to live.

19. The other Repukes
knew what she was going to say. She would not have been given any time otherwise. They consciously planned the whole charade as an ugly smear against Murtha. That's the way they have done things since 1993 and it has always worked for them.

This is the first time in 12 years that I can remember Democrats defending one of their guys. It's the thing that used to gall me beyond belief, that they would just let a smear hang out there to become solidified into "conventional wisdom." I would be so furious that they would not stand up for their own guys time after time after time.

This Mean Jean trick would have worked for the Repukes had the Dems not started yelling right there, on the spot, as it was happening. They need to defend immediately like this every single time the Repukes spring a smear.

The Willie Hortoning of the Democratic Party has always worked for these scumbags. They used being "soft on crime" against the Democrats and morphed it seamlessly into being soft on terror.

25. "I pledge to... refrain from name-calling or the questioning of character"
Edited on Tue Nov-22-05 07:56 AM by IanDB1
Maiden Speech by the Honorable Jean Schmidt

Public Statements
Speaker: Representative Jean Schmidt (OH)
Title: Maiden Speech by the Honorable Jean Schmidt
Location: Washington, DC
Date: 09/06/2005

MAIDEN SPEECH BY THE HONORABLE JEAN SCHMIDT -- (House of Representatives - September 06, 2005)

(Mrs. SCHMIDT asked and was given permission to address the House for 1 minute.)

Mrs. SCHMIDT. Mr. Speaker, I stand here today in the same shoes, though with a slightly higher heel, as thousands of Members who have taken the same oath before me. I am mindful of what is expected of me both by this hallowed institution and the hundreds of thousands of Americans I am blessed to represent. I am the lowest-ranking Member of this body, the very bottom rung of the ladder; and I am privileged to hold that title.

This House has much work to do. On that we can all agree. We will not always agree on the details of that work. Honorable people can certainly agree to disagree. However, here today I accept a second oath. I pledge to walk in the shoes of my colleagues and refrain from name-calling or the questioning of character. It is easy to quickly sink to the lowest form of political debate. Harsh words often lead to headlines, but walking this path is not a victimless crime. This great House pays the price.

So at this moment, I begin my tenure in this Chamber, uncertain of what history will say of my tenure here. I come here green with only a desire to make our great country even greater. We have much work to do. In that spirit, I pledge to each of you that any disagreements we may have are just that and no more. Walking in each other's shoes takes effort and pause; however, it is my sincere hope that I never lose the patience to view each of you as human beings first, God's creatures, and foremost. I deeply appreciate this opportunity to serve with each of you. I very much look forward to getting to know you better, and I humbly thank you, Mr. Speaker, for allowing me to address this humble body.

27. Jean Schmidt and Dan Bubp are BOTH cowards, no matter who is lying
Jean for feeling the need to hide behind someone else and say, "Danny Bubp says..." and then to retract her statement in the face of criticism.

And Danny Bubp for not providing cover for the woman who helped him get his job in the first place-- whether he actually said those words or not. I thought a real Marine would be willing to take a bullet for someone he owes his career to? Doesn't "Semper Fidelis" mean "Always Faithful?"

Cowards leave their mentors behind on the battlefield. Marines never do.

I guess Danny Bubp is one of those "Jeff Gannon Marines" who have a completely different idea of what it means to be "in the foxhole" with someone.

Then again, after the way Schmidt abandoned Joe Braun when he was caught using her campaign email account to solicit kinky sex, maybe Danny Bubp realized Jean wouldn't stick her neck out to protect him, either.

35. Apparent who the Cut and Runners are!
Sen/COL Murtha's interview with Tim Russert on MTP only exemplified his stature in the eyes of many Americans who give a damn.
He did not allow Russert to use him in the name-calling game that Russert and so many of his co-horts use.

Sen/COL Murtha was not drawn into attacking Jeanne Schmidt, nor the Bubpus guy. Het gave her an out for simply being the junior Senator doing and reading what she was given to do. Anyone with an ounce of smarts would realize that the CON's would not have allowed a Junior with less than 80-days that time on the floor.....it was a case of let "Mikey," do the dirty deed.

COLUMBUS – State Rep. John Boccieri, D-New Middletown, an Iraq War veteran, said he is disappointed in his former colleague of the Ohio House and now Congresswoman Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio.

(snip)
Boccieri, who returned in September from his fourth tour in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, said, “My colleague, Rep. Bubp, is out of line and so was Congresswoman Schmidt. To call a decorated serviceman a coward because he shares a differing view about Iraq War policy demeans all veterans and soldiers in uniform today.”

(snip)
“Their style of politics attempts to demean the character of people with different opinions and brand them as unpatriotic,” Boccieri said in a news release. “I find it ironic that at a time when American soldiers are fighting for democracy in Iraq, we are experiencing such a confining view of democracy right here in our own country. Debate is healthy and is at the core of a robust democracy. The debate about Iraq is appropriate and verbal attacks waged against a decorated veteran who chose to put his life on the line for all of us is cheap and insulting.”

(snip)
“I have the utmost respect for State Rep. Bubp’s service to our country and would share this same sentiment if I felt he was being unjustly attacked,” Boccieri said. “Rep. Bubp should follow the lead of a regretful congresswoman – Jean Schmidt – and rescind his disparaging remarks made to Congressman Murtha, and in my judgment, all of America’s veterans.”

Schmidt in war of words Rookie lawmaker's 'coward' remarks ricochet

By Malia Rulon
Enquirer Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - Three days after Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., by name when talking with Schmidt, and he would never call a fellow Marine a coward. "The unfortunate thing about all of that is that her choice of words on the floor of the House - I don't know, she's a freshman, she had one minute. "Unfortunately, they came out wrong," said Bubp, R-West Union.

Lawmakers were in the midst of a passionate debate Friday over whether to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq, an issue pushed to a vote by Republicans after public comments from Murtha. Schmidt - decked out in a red-white-and-blue suit that resembled the U.S. flag - went to the floor and quoted from a telephone conversation with Bubp: "He asked me to send Congress a message: Stay the course. "He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message: That cowards cut and run, Marines never do." The comment drew a chorus of boos and shouting from Democrats.

It's unclear whether Schmidt, who will start her 79th day in the House today, knew at the time of her remarks that Murtha had served 37 years in the Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserve. She immediately took back her remarks. It's against House rules to refer to a fellow lawmaker by name or to criticize them. Schmidt, a Republican from Clermont County's Miami Township, then wrote to Murtha to explain that she has a lot to learn and did not mean to disparage his service.

Bubp, who has served in the Marine Corps Reserve for 27 years, including three years of active duty, said he called Schmidt on Friday afternoon to discuss the resolution that called for the immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq - not to talk about Murtha. The House nonbinding resolution failed by a 403-3 vote. "There was no discussion of him personally being a coward or about any person being a coward," Bubp said. "My message to the folks in Washington, D.C., and to all the Congress people up there, is to stay the course. We cannot leave Iraq or cut and run - any terminology that you want to use." Still, Bubp said the whole thing has been blown out of proportion.

52. JEAN SCHMIDT'S ETHICAL PROBLEMS-I smell pork roasting
Here's an interesting tid bit on the old shrew.

In the tradition of corrupt repigs.

http://www.mydd.com/story/2005/7/12/12835/7314

snip> JEAN SCHMIDT'S ETHICAL PROBLEMS: PAST AND PRESENT

Republican congressional candidate, Jean Schmidt is currently facing a state investigation by the Joint Legislative Ethics Committee into her actions when she was a state representative. The investigation is examining why Schmidt and four other Republican lawmakers failed to report $5,000 worth in Bengals tickets and restaurant tabs that a lobbyist for the biotech firm, Chiron Corp. paid for. Schmidt's campaign aids state in the Cincinnati Enquirer that she did not know that the cost of the luxury seats and dinner at Nicola's Ristorante for both her and her daughter exceeded $75. However, this response differs from another statement the campaign made that Schmidt knew the gifts exceeded $75, but thought they were from Boomer Esiason, not lobbyists. At the time, Chiron was lobbying legislators to create a cystic fibrosis task force. A month later, Schmidt co-sponsored a bill that created a cystic fibrosis task force.

This isn't the first time Schmidt has been accused of unethical activity...< snip

Issues
Restoring Religious Freedom and Upholding Traditional Values
I helped fight for the right of a school district to post the Ten Commandments against a lawsuit by the ACLU. I stand opposed to expanded gambling in this state, as the economic and moral problems that come with it are far too great. Marriage should be between a man and a woman, and Ohio can and should act to ensure the civil unions now available in Vermont are not recognized in Ohio because of the force of a legal challenge.<

His career "high points" are ones that most folk would not even bother mentioning. And that bit about working for Tommy Franks...sure, pal. He worked for a two star who worked for Tommy Franks, and who knows what his reporting chain was between himself and the two-star. And notice how he avoids mentioning what billet he served in--if it were anything good, he would have placed it front and center--sounds like ACDUTRA to me!

He might as well have said he worked for the dunce, himself. If you are gonna BS, might as well do it in a big way!! Hey, if you are an E-1, you report to the Commander-in-Chief...through a chain of command that stretches on, interminably.

Wasn't it B-1 Bob Dornan, former Orange Co, CA Congressman who grabbed a fellow congressman by the tie, threatening to beat him up on the House floor?

Perhaps that's how the House rule about criticizing colleagues evolved.

61. Remember, that was just her SECOND House speech
Hilariously, here's her first...

"This House has much work to do. "

I bet this is the way they talk about anti-* opponents back home.

She let slip the real and very cynical thinking in her district.

I bet he thought her small town rhetoric would play big time in DC and she looked so smug and self righteous as she out shouted the boo'es and hisses her comments generated.

She was in for a rude shock- Murtha is respected on the Hill, while she looks like the wicked witch of the heart-less land.

79. I remember that and wondered why
more wasn't made of it, especially in the corrupt electoral state of Ohio.

I thought she said 'Marines don't cut and run'? Looks like her 'stay-at-home' Marine Col. just ran out on her. Unless she was lying on the floor of Congress, that is.

My feeling is that these two are typical of the adoloscent rightwing mindset, dirty tricksters who for years, got away with their stupid smears because the Dems ignored them.

I believe the two of them cooked this up together, including her appearing in a jogging suit that made her look like a giant flag lapel pin, and they probably giggled over how brilliant they were.

The reaction of the Democrats was instant and like a boil that has been waiting to burst for a long time. Too bad their childish pranks did not get a similar reaction the first time they tried them.

Col. Bupb's retreat should be remembered and proves that a quick response to their vile, smear tactics will result in a cowardly 'Oh, I didn't mean it' and would have long ago had they been stopped right at the beginning.

I'm glad it's happening now, but it was ignored for way too long, and has caused so much damage to this country ~ I still wish Kerry had sued the lying Swift Boat Veterans ~ we would have seen very different statements from them had they been under oath and forced to acknowledge the facts.

I understand that people felt that she was attacking him, but I don't believe that, in her heart, she meant to." <\div>
