ALEXANDRIA, Virginia (Reuters) - A U.S. man was found guilty on Tuesday of conspiring with and aiding al Qaeda and plotting to assassinate President George W. Bush.

A 12-member federal jury at the U.S. District Court found Ahmed Abu Ali, 24, guilty of all charges in a nine-count indictment. He had been charged with conspiring to support and supporting al Qaeda, conspiracy to kill Bush and conspiracy to commit aircraft hijacking.

U.S. District Judge Gerald Bruce Lee set a February 17, 2006, date to sentence Abu Ali, who faces life in prison.

-snip-

Abu Ali said he made up the confessions in order to stop members of the Saudi domestic security police from torturing him.

5. Suspect in Bush Assassination Plot Convicted
Man Accused of Plotting to Assassinate President Bush Found Guilty; Jury Rejects Torture Claims

ALEXANDRIA, Va. Nov 22, 2005 — An Arab-American college student was convicted Tuesday of joining al-Qaida and plotting to assassinate President Bush.

The federal jury rejected Ahmed Omar Abu Ali's claim that Saudi authorities whipped and tortured him to extract a false confession.

Abu Ali, a 24-year-old U.S. citizen born to a Jordanian father and raised in Falls Church, Va., could get life in prison on charges that included conspiracy to assassinate the president, conspiracy to hijack aircraft and providing support to al-Qaida.

22. Check it out. What do you think?
http://writ.news.findlaw.com/cassel/20050307.html

I think this is a precedent setting case that marks the destruction of the US judicial system.

This is what we who worry about the Patriot Act have been worried about.

8. Man found guilty of conspiring to kill Bush
WASHINGTON (AFP) - A US court found an Arab-American man guilty of conspiring to assassinate President George W. Bush and receiving financial aid from Al-Qaeda.

A jury found Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, 24, guilty on nine counts, including conspiracy to kill Bush, conspiracy to hijack a plane and offering to aid
Osama bin Laden's terror network, according to Edward Adams, a spokesman for US District Court in Alexandria, Virginia.

"This conviction is the result of extraordinary law enforcement work and international cooperation," US District Attorney Paul McNulty said in a statement. "It serves as a clear warning to all that terrorists can and will be brought to the bar of justice."

Abu Ali had pleaded not guilty and his defense lawyers said he was tortured into making false statements in Saudi Arabia, where he was arrested in June 2003.

You'd think a would be presidential assassin would be more prominent news. Funny how they bring up Bin Laden and Al Qaeda here. Curiouser and curiouser . . .

The Strange Case of Ahmed Omar Abu Ali:
Troubling Questions about the Government's Motives and Tactics

The case is far from as open-and-shut as the FBI might suggest. Indeed, a number of aspects of the prosecution are deeply troubling.

The Early History of Abu Ali's Case: The Government Reverses Itself

At the end of the 2003 academic year at the Saudi university he was attending, Abu Ali failed to return home to the U.S. As a result, his family - Jordan-born, naturalized U.S. citizens living in Northern Virginia where I practice - contacted me to see if I could help.

In August 2004, attorneys filed suit in the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia, on behalf of Abu Ali's parents, in order to obtain his release. Among the attorneys was renowned constitutional rights scholar and Georgetown University law professor David Cole.

18. Was there any evidence other than his confession
that he says was given under torture in Saudi Arabia? (I thought it was Egypt where he was interrogated.)

Why did he face trial in a civilian court instead of facing a military tribunal, as with the rest of the AQ suspects?

Interesting that the gov gets a conviction right at a time when * really needs a boost in the polls. (Of course, that could be any time in the past many and many future months.)

23. I remember the evidence the govt used to prove he wasn't tortured
They said he didn't mention it when he talked to his parents on the phone. Seriously. They said that proved that he wasn't/hadn't been tortured.

25. A confession made in a country which practices torture
doesn't prove a thing.

I probably would have voted "Not Guilty," based on what I know of the case.
