Obama calls for troop reduction in Iraq

Associated Press

CHICAGO - Illinois Democratic Sen. Barack Obama on Tuesday called for a troop reduction in Iraq and criticized the Bush administration for questioning the patriotism of people who speak out against the war.

"I believe that U.S. forces are still a part of the solution in Iraq," according to a prepared text of Obama's speech to the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations. "The strategic goals should be to allow for a limited drawdown of U.S. troops, coupled with shift to a more effective counter-insurgency strategy that puts the Iraqi security forces in the lead and intensifies our efforts to train Iraqi forces."

Following the Dec. 15 Iraqi elections, Obama said the United States should focus over the course of the next year on how to reduce its troops there.
"Notice that I say 'reduce' and not 'fully withdraw,'" Obama said.

...

"We watched the shameful attempt to paint John Murtha - a Marine Corp recipient of two purple hearts and a Bronze Star - into a coward of questionable patriotism," Obama said.

2. Love you Obama but give it up

Take a stronger position.

In two years, it will have been the best decision, even next yr. if the exit is handled correctly.

Scratch that - I forgot Bush is in charge -- ug

3. More tow the line caution from media annointed leader Obama.
I really really want to like this guy but he keeps demonstrating that he has either no courage or no convictions. Stand and and speak out Obama. Stop looking at the tired old DC Democrats for leadership.

And, just to be fair, as I have with the rest of the neo-liberal warhawk Democrats: this is just more Stay and Die nonsense. This is just a reframing of the DLC New Democrat me-tooism safe position on the Iraqi Blunder. Stay the Course Must Succeed, lets have a symbolic withdrawal of the 20,000 extra troops we put in there and pretend that hand waving will make it all right.

What would that more effective counter insurgency strategy be Obama? Perhaps we ought to try Decimation, it worked for Uncle Joe.

I am f*ing sick of the warhawk stay and die creeps. get out already. Admit that you are in lockstep with the neocons.

4. Why does the democratic party continue to limp toward the obvious?
The US invasion was begun on a lie, is still a lie, and Iraqis and US are dying daily as a result of a lie. What is the point of saying US soldiers are part of the solution when they are clearly part of the problem? The troops don't make policy. Lousy politicians do. It's time soldiers are brought home.

7. Reduction leaves the remaining more vulnerable. Out. Now.
Obama doesn't want the extremist kook label, but serious Democrats have to understand that the extreme position is where negotiations begin. If we insist on OUT NOW, then we may be able to negotiate for Murtha's redeployment. If we ask for troop reduction, we get nothing.

13. Seems we have a growing rebellion in the Senate.
This makes how many now, since Murtha, to call for withdrawl?

16. Everybody has to get their two cents in
in order to play the politics game.

I am, honestly, tired of it.

Our politicians are NOT rock stars to be adored. We need to hold their feet to the fire and demand they take a stand. This is a mealy mouthed, cautious tip toeing into the waves.

Obama needs to be around for a few more years and let him be. If he is worthy he will emerge as a true and honest patriot.

Until then, he is, apparently, still testing the waters--we should avoid making icons of these baby politicians.

He needs to let go of the DLC consultants, if that's who's giving him all that wrong information, and fast.
