US to speed up Iraq power transfer
US deaths in post war Iraq are greater than during the conflict
The chief US administrator in Iraq has said he wants to accelerate the handover of authority to Iraqis.
Paul Bremer told a news conference in Baghdad he wanted to give Iraqis a "path and a timeline" for the transfer of power from the US-led coalition.
He also said the coalition would double the size of the Iraqi Civil Defence Force by next March and accelerate the training of Iraqi soldiers and police . . . .
There has been an increase in the number of attacks on US-led troops in Iraq recently but Mr Bremer said he had no clear indication that Saddam Hussein was behind them.
It's not like the Bushies have any real choice. Half of the army's combat divisions are tied up in Iraq on occupation duty following an invasion that had nothing to do with battling terrorists. The question is whether the Bushies want to catch Osama or whether they want to invade another resource rich country.
More to the point, to which Iraqis does Bremer want to transfer power? Does he mean real Iraqis who will govern Iraq for the benefit of the people and be resposnsible to them? Or does he mean quislings like Chalibi who will govern Iraq for the benefit of transnational corporations and be responsible to the Bushies?
