(British) Marines 'violent bullying' probed
27 November 2005

A criminal inquiry is being carried out after a film apparently showing a Royal Marine recruit being beaten unconscious was leaked to a newspaper.

The footage, obtained by the News of the World, appears to show two naked men being forced to fight each other as part of an initiation ceremony.

One marine then appears to be kicked in the face by a third, allegedly one of his superiors in 42 Commando.

<snip>

The marine who filmed the alleged fight told the newspaper the ritual was more than drunken antics and that the protagonists were forced to fight in a humiliating manner.

3. Why does everyone purport to be surprised by this?
We're talking about an (almost) all male environment in which violence isn't only latent, it is specifically encouraged. Soldiers kill people. That's their job. Why aren't people shocked about the ways they do that?

You have to believe the sentimental twaddle about noble warriors and military honour and all that pompous propaganda to be shocked.

4. I have soldiers in my family, and there is a difference
between being a professional killer and engaging in savagery and violence off the battlefield. This is not the behavior of soldiers; it is the behavior of sociopaths. There si a difference, and most soldiers will tell you that. I don't believe any of that "twaddle," because of people close to me being in combat. This isn't combat, nor is it legitimate training for such.

The Marine who taped this apparently didn't agree with this, either.

6. When I was in the army 20
years ago.We had a unit of British soldiers with us.I saw a Brit SGT walk up and punch a soldier right in the face for yawning in formation.They were deadly serious about their army.They did make us look like crap though much more disciplined.
