GM to raise India workforce by 30% (Cut 30000 in US)
Edited on Mon Nov-28-05 09:09 AM by losdiablosgato
NEW DELHI: America's loss is turning out to be India's gain. Within days of announcing 30,000 job-cuts in the US, automobile giant General Motors Corp will this week unveil plans to increase its workforce in India by nearly 30%.

The carmaker has decided to add 450 jobs at its existing plant in Halol (Gujarat) as part of plans to expand presence in India - the emerging low-cost automobile hub in the east.

"GM is going on a hiring spree in India, and it's add jobs both on the factory shop-floor as well in the executive cadre. GM will this week start the process to hire 450 additional people for its India venture," a senior head-hunter told The Times of India.

While it will increase its floor-worker force by 400, another 50 are being added in its executive cadre. "This is in line with the company's plans to expand its presence in India, which GM feels will drive future growth," the source said.

30. China is on that same list.
And as much as people don't want to hear it, there is no way to stop it. Well there is one way. And that is to work for less pay. I've said it before, and the flaming posts followed.

Our standard of living is on it's way down. It's not an argument, but an inevitablity. The only reason it was high was because we kept it high through force. Not entirely true, but effectively true.

33. As long as you're starting with the executives
It's not the rank and file workers making $25 an hour killing the company, it's the execs and CEOs making millions of dollars a year. IF the execs and CEOs of companies will take a pay cut at the same time that they're asking the lower-level employees to do the same, then maybe I'll agree that it's a reasonable solution.

Right now they're just trying to cut wages for the regular-Joe kinds of people so that the executives and stockholders can make more money. If a company is truly serious about needing to cut costs so desperately, I want to see it happening from the top down - otherwise it's just another war on the middle class.

45. Standard of Living
I agree. In an inter-connected world, why would any employer pay an American worker 5 to 10 times the salary of a Chinese or Indian worker for the same or even better quality work!!!

47. Hello - it costs different amounts to live in different places!
Companies SHOULD care about more than just paying the absolute least they can in labor costs. I am sure it costs 5-10 times *less* to live in India than it does here, too. Lowering our wages probably won't magically result in the other costs of living to go down accordingly. In strictest economic terms, I can see why companies would want cheap labor - but in so doing they will also lose their customers because their old customer base won't be able to afford anything.

44. Hello???
The "Big 3" are not the only UAW (union) company's that make cars?? Toyota is a UAW company who makes the following 2 cars in America with UAW workers.

Toyota Corolla
Toyota Tacoma

So I will proudly buy one of these cars before I give any money to the REPUBLICAN supporting "Big 3".

Do some research before you slam me, maybe you can find a book on this subject at Wal-Mart....

16. Not that I'm saying this is OK, but...
There's a big difference in cutting 30K jobs here, and hiring 400 in India. Were any of those 30K given the option of moving to India I wonder? And taking a 75% cut in pay and benefits?

What you really have to ask here, is what is "profitable" anymore, and when is it just too damn much money going to the wrong people at the top?

I keep saying--we have become a nation of Ferengi..........

18. The British automaker Rover adopted this strategy a few years ago
Edited on Mon Nov-28-05 10:35 AM by fedsron2us
when they outsourced the production of the City Rover to Tata in India. The car never found many buyers in the UK or anywhere else in the world for that matter. In fact Rover actually wanted the car produced at a cheaper cost than the Indian manufacturers were prepared to accept. In the end it made no difference as Rover went bankrupt. All its assets were finally sold off to the Nanjing Automotive in 2005 and the plant shipped off to China. I expect a similar fate may be waiting for GM.

27. 67% import tax in India
When I was working there we couldn't import anything because of the high import tax plus all the bribes we had to pay.

Import taxes into the United States are about 10%. ... So how is that free trade?

GM can go to hell.

28. GM just couldn't make enough profit by using American workers. Sad....
...now we have a situation where 30,000 Americans will no longer be buying goods in the U. S. economy at the same rate they were previously. Additionally, small companies that were supplying parts to the plants supporting those 30,000 workers will also be affected in a negative way.

To GM, and other major corporations that have outsourced one or more capabilities like manufacturing and information technology, Greed has become God.

34. Hate outsourcing too but...
are you really saying that the cost of those 450 jobs in India is equal to 30,000 in the US?

450 is much 30000 and to represent that using a percentage is a bit misleading don't you think, it seems to me that in this case they really are expanding for the Indian market and not simply to reimportto the US.

37. The problem is that Ford and GM are asking for hand outs ...
from the American government to invest in new plants here. That's how they play the game. They make billions here and spend it overseas while neglecting their domestic plants because they know when enough people are unemployed here the politicians will cave in. It's economic blackmail. Four hundred fifty jobs in India today, a few more in Eastern Europe tomorrow, some more in Mexico next week. Pretty soon they make up the production lost here.

36. They had to do something.
They have already lost $4.8 billion this year.

If their profit per vehical is $3,000. they would have to sell another 1.6 million cars just to break even.

Yeah, they should have done something long ago, but right now they are just trying to stay in business.

40. They purposely let things go so they can cut production here
and close plants. They know exactly what they're doing. They let their domestic models go until they won't sell so they can get tax breaks from the government to retool their plants. They're like a major sports franchise playing one city against another to get a new stadium. And if the unions get hurt in the process so much the better as far as they're concerned.
