Harris' staff quick to quit

They leave for better jobs, Katherine Harris says, but turnover worries watchers

In just under three years, U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris has had four chiefs of staff, four district directors and four press secretaries.

Harris has had to replace key people on her staff every nine months, a rate of staff turnover that far exceeds most of those in Congress.

On average, members of Congress hold onto their high-level staff for four to five years.

Turnover isn't limited to Harris' congressional office, either. As she prepares to run against Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, Harris has been hampered by turnover on her campaign staff. Her campaign manager quit last week, after just a few months on the job and not long after she lost a pollster and a campaign finance director earlier this year.

1. How odd! I can't think of a single reason why ...
anyone wouldn't want to work for her. Oh, wait. I can.

We met her at LA Pride this past year. She's so funny. I was venting about Paris Hilton being the Grand Marshal of the parade and Julie laughed "oh fuck that bitch".

I would rather gather carts in a Walmart parking lot - in Alaska - in December.

Alaska isn't that bad in December. Well, maybe it is.

You're right though, anything would be better.

8. The word is out that the GOP has abandoned her; she's so Bush.
Just as the GOP is scrambling to distance itself from Bush in the 2006 elections, it is writing Harris off for her tight identification with putting W in office. Any intelligent political staff would jump ship once they read this handwriting on the wall. Another DU thread a few days ago said Harris is way behind in fundraising in her Senate race. Proof positive that the GOP power brokers have walked away from her.

22. They know 06 is gonna be tough
So they are going to spend their money where they think they can win. She's NOT a winner. She got her Quid Pro Quo with that Congo seat, but now she is on her own--and running on her boobs, at her age, is not the way to win. http://www.crooksandliars.com/2005/08/09.html#a4385

Her staff is smart, IMO--it is WAY easier to jump ship when you are still getting a paycheck; the rank smell of desperation is far less apparent.

21. yep, strangly she's doing it again in the photo on the link. I was
watching a rerun of a show on wb called "sisters" or something like that. one of the characters fix for the other character being ignored in the staff meeting was for her to lean over and pout her lips when she wanted them to listen to her.

Glad I'm not a female.

24. by definition, any job not involving Harris is "better"
Cleaning out dumpsters, emptying bedpans, sweeping up entrails in a poultry processing plant, etc. -- these spring to mind.

"But Harris said most of the employees have left because they've gone on to better jobs. If anything, the turnover shows her staff members are in high demand after gaining experience in a "high-profile" office.

"They always get stolen away," Harris said."

Right. It's like people who get dumped in a relationship, trying to salvage their self-esteem by asserting that THEY were the ones who did the dumping.

26. Tsk Tsk - Another Partisan Hack who thinks she has substance...
Somebody needs to give it to her straight: she performed her partisan hackery quite well back in 2000. But she made a deal with the devil; did she really expect the GOP machine to hold up its end of the bargain?

Like Paula Jones, she needs to slink back into her hole and wait until another political hit-job is necessary.

There is simply no other use for her.

31. I've seen this before.
I wish I had more and better examples to give, but right now I can only name one. In 1997, there was a guy by the name of Paxton who was an up-and-comer in the House. By all accounts he was a highly competent guy.

I used to drink beer with his Chief of Staff over at Sign of the Whale. One day, he told me that Paxton was forming a coalition of Republican moderates with the intention of maneuvering Newt Gingrich out as Speaker of the House. From the CoS's point of view, it was a real pain, because as soon as Paxton hatched the idea his staff started jumping over the side. So the guy was trying to put together this fragile coalition at the exact same time that he was trying to replace loss of talent.

He didn't tell me why they were bailing out, but a little while later it became abundantly clear, and when I saw the now out of work CoS a year or so later, he confirmed it.

Paxton was gay, or at least bisexual, and Gingrich had the goods on him. One day, the Republican leadership sat the guy down and told him he could retire gracefully, or Newt was going to out him. He disappeared almost before the story made it to print.

The point is that the staffers saw the writing on the wall before the political maneuver was even in place. I have a feeling that Harris is dirty as hell in every conceivable way--we'll see what Michael Scanlon has to say about her, I guess.

(There is a sort-of silver lining to the story, though. Those Republican moderates were pissed off enough about what Gingrich did to Paxton that they decided they were going to burn him the same way. As soon as the GOP suffered a net loss of seats in the House in '98, the moderates swooped in and told Gingrich that they were going to make his well-known affair with one of his own staffers (whom he later married) front page news, not a good thing to advertise while the GOP was trying to steal the White House by impeaching Bill Clinton for the same thing. And after that, they burned Livingston, too. Nobody ever believes me when I tell them that Gingrich got whacked by pissed off Log Cabin Republicans, not the Big Dawg, but I swear it's the truth.)

36. That's fascinating -- thanks for dishing
I hope Paxton landed on his feet; the world can always use another moderate Republican. Although I still can't understand why gays stick with the GOP at all. :eyes:

All those ex-employees of dear Kate's remind me that I've worked for some crappy bosses in my time, and when I left them I never said squat except to those closest to me. I wanted to work again, thank you.

As for Katherine Harris's ties to MZM -- holy guano, Batman. That one makes me want to  That is just too tasty. Karma is a cast-iron bitch, is it not?

33. Maybe they're worried about Harris's donations from MZM!
Seeing what happened to another of the top three recipients of campaign donations from MZM today when Duke Cunningham looks to be going to prison, they might be having second thoughts about working on her campaign now. The MZM investigation might be going after her next! We can ONLY PRAY! Then we can get her on the stand for Florida election crap too!

35. Ahhh! A clue!
"Now, Mitchell Wade has since left MZM to spend more time with his lawyers. But before his high-flying life as a corrupt defense contractor came to a grinding halt last summer he was into more than Duke Cunningham. Wade's MZM was in deep with Rep. Katherine Harris (R-FL). So deep in fact that, in a story we broke here at TPM back on June 21st, Harris once had a one day haul of $28,000. Fourteen checks for $2,000 a pop, each from a different MZM employee, each received on March 23rd, 2004. (MZM employees later claimed these contributions were coerced.)"

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/007125.php

Oh yeah. That's why they're ditching, because the ones who knew about this already split, and the ones that come in aren't being told about it. When they read Josh Marshall's page or hear it on the street, they split too. Nobody wants to be around when that axe falls.
