Inmate, 77, faces death
The Mississippi Supreme Court has set a Dec. 14 execution date for a 77-year-old inmate on death row.

In an order filed Monday, the high court denied a motion by John B. Nixon's attorney, David W. Clark, to vacate his death sentence and also refused to hear oral arguments on the matter.

Nixon was convicted of capital murder in the Jan. 2, 1985, murder-for-hire of Virginia Tucker in her Brandon home. Tucker's ex-husband, Elester Joseph Ponthieux of Raymond, is serving a life sentence for hiring Nixon.

Nixon is the oldest inmate on death row. The last execution in Mississippi was Dec. 11, 2002.

1. But... it's the "rule of law"
"Justice must be served"
"Closure for the family"
"We want to watch him die"

7. Closure for the family
In this case, it was family (the husband) who hired the hit man. Wouldn't the rest of the family feel that the husband was the cause of the wife dying? After all, guns (er, hit men) don't kill, people (in this case, the husband) do.

2. So.......
He knew the consequence when he took the job on to assassinate Virginia Tucker...He was 55 years old then. No doubt not his first hit-job.

9. If the community and his peers
support the death penalty then I will honor and respect their decision. The community sets the parameters for acceptable/unacceptable behavior and the consequences.

14. yes but what good does killing him do?
killing him only let's him go from punishment. Keep them alive and in "punishment" as long as possible if you want a deterrent.

6. Shouldn't the husband who hired the hit man
get the same sentence as the hit man? After all, if the husband had not hired the hit man, the wife would be alive today.

Just wondering.

8. Yes, that does seem strange
If the death penalty is meant to deter, then this is an encouragement to hire hitmen - maybe it's just a capitalistic way of increasing the money circulating in the economy.

10. Presumably
a husband who can afford to hire a hitman can also hire a better lawyer.

11. right - my thoughts as well
The husband seeks out & hires a hit-man and the husband gets life? Makes no sense.
