Democrats say Bush didn't deliver

CAPITOL HILL Senate Democrats say they didn't get the answers they were looking for from President Bush during his speech on Iraq today at the U-S Naval Academy.

Jack Reed of Rhode Island says Bush delivered a "laundry list" of past accomplishments, but not a clear outline of what's ahead. He says Americans need to have a sense of how long the mission will take, and what it will cost -- particularly in terms of the lives of U-S troops.

John Kerry says Bush is falsely trying to suggest that Democrats want to set an artificial date for a pullout. Kerry says that's not the case -- and that they just want an "estimated timetable" for success.

He also says Bush is still failing to deal with the "fundamental reality" of the insurgency in Iraq -- and that he's ignoring his own commanders who say that the high U-S troop levels in Iraq are helping to fuel that insurgency.

1. The Democrats need to challange Bush
The Dems are nothing but Republicans and need to get a backbone and fight Bush.

Even Clinton and other hawkish Democrats have come under criticism from liberal anti-war activists, many of whom will hold sway over presidential primary contests.

As far as I'm concerned she is DOA as a President if she can't take a stand.

2. Most of the country opposes the war. Clinton is the past.
We will be nominating an actual Democrat this time.

How about Boxer/Conyers?

9. I totally agree: We need the REAL Dems to step up to the plate.
Hillarity is toast. It's the republicans (some of which are in the Dem party under the label DLC) that are supporting her, in order to divide the Dem party.

4. They were fact-based and honest--what we need in a government!
some highlights:

Sens. Reed and Kerry were great. Back to reality now, America--here is how the prez has led you into La-la Land.

Reed: This speech does not answer the questions the Senate has. Where's the plan?

Kerry: This speech was another aircraft-carrier moment. He only talks in front of troops. He draws a false line to make his case. These are America's troops, not HIS. He won't admit that our troops in Iraq are part of the problem--everyone else knows this. The Democrats aren't for leaving a failed state, no matter what the other side tries to say.

Kerry: Murtha and the rest of us are all moving in the same direction. It doesn't demoralize the troops--they say "thanks for speaking out". We've been proven correct over and over--and I am completely comfortable fighting for our troops.

Reed: The prez had to give this speech because of the people, not Murtha. And you can see how the Senate is putting pressure on him, too.

Kerry: The prez painted a statistical but unrealistic picture about the troops. He ignores the political/diplomatic part of the solution and only talks about the military part.

5. Nice summary! Thx, I have not seen the speeches today.
Our dems need to add one more thing. They must talk about the WAR PROFITEERING every chance they get. Many Americans are not aware of what's going on.

6. I agree, Dems can win the debate with focus on war profiteering and how
it was part of original scheme and continues today. (I wonder how many Thanksgiving dinners Halliburton served up this year vs. how many they billed for?)

11. WP: Democrats Attack Iraq Strategy
Democrats Attack Iraq Strategy
Sen. Kerry, Sen. Reed Say Bush Plan Ignores Basic Realities
By William Branigin
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, November 30, 2005

Democratic lawmakers charged today that President Bush has failed to set forth a coherent strategy to win the war in Iraq and called for the establishment of measurable benchmarks for progress so that U.S. troops can be gradually withdrawn.

The Democratic criticism came in response to a presidential speech at the U.S. Naval Academy today and the release of a new 35-page White House document entitled, "National Strategy for Victory in Iraq." In the speech, Bush denounced critics who he said want "an artificial timetable" for drawing down the nearly 160,000 U.S. troops now in Iraq. Bush said that "setting an artificial deadline to withdraw" would send a message that America is "weak" and "unreliable," would signal enemies in Iraq to wait out the United States and would "vindicate terrorist tactics of beheading and mass murder."

In a Capitol Hill news conference, Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) and Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) said they were disappointed by Bush's plan, which they said fell short on specifics and ignored basic realities in Iraq.

"The president," Reed said, "failed to answer the question that all Americans are asking: how do we know progress is being made there?"

Kerry accused Bush of resorting to "straw man" arguments in denouncing his critics' calls for a drawdown of U.S. forces....

14. Kerry says U-S lacks strategy for pulling troops out of Iraq

http://www.klfy.com/global/story.asp?s=4188027&ClientType=Printable

Kerry says U-S lacks strategy for pulling troops out of Iraq

<snip>

Kerry tells N-B-C the huge U-S force in Iraq is hindering the transfer of power to Iraqis. He says the American deployment delays the "willingness and ability of Iraqi troops to stand up."

...

But Kerry says the president doesn't have a plan to cut the number of troops or transfer responsibility. Bush has refused to set a withdrawal timetable, something Kerry says is essential.

Kerry says transferring power to the Iraqis "is not as complicated" as some people think it is.

And Kerry says the solution is political, not military. He says "no gun no soldier" will end the violence.

16. The Iraqis Need Big Government?
* seems to be saying the only way they can get on their feet is with more and bigger government. Why doesn't he call on the Iraqis to 'Pull Up Their Bootsraps'?

The republican scheme sounds an awful lot like 'Welfare for Iraqis', if you ask me. Or a really bad case of social engineering: republican style.
